Book Application of Coherent Anti Stokes Raman Scattering to Combustion Media

Download or read book Application of Coherent Anti Stokes Raman Scattering to Combustion Media written by Larry P. Goss and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A laboratory-based system utilizing the Nd:YAG laser has been developed to investigate the Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS) of molecular gases in combustion. Single-shot and simultaneous experimental measurements of species concentration and temperature of combustion media are reported and compared with other optical techniques and theoretical predictions. The adverse effects of beam propagation through turbulence are investigated and discussed. A transportable hardened CARS system, constructed to operate in adverse environments, has been used to conduct a series of investigations in a practical combustion tunnel. Temperature and number-density measurements made as a function of fuel-air flow, position in the combustion tunnel, and fuel variation--including both gaseous and liquid fuels--are reported. Book Cars coherent Anti Stokes Raman Spectroscopy Investigations in Sooting and Turbulent Flames

Download or read book Cars coherent Anti Stokes Raman Spectroscopy Investigations in Sooting and Turbulent Flames written by Alan C.. Eckbreth and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coherent anti-Stoke Raman spectroscopy (CARS) investigations in sooting, laminar and turbulent, propane-fueled diffusion flames are reported. For a 5320 A pump wavelength, using a frequency-doubled neodymium laser, interferences can occur at very high soot densities. For N2 CARS, there are both incoherent and coherent components to the interference. The incoherent interference arises primarily from anti-Stokes fluorescence from C2 excited by Stokes laser absorption. The C2 is created by the laser vaporization of soot particulates, shown to occur even on a nanosecond time scale. The coherent interference arises most probably from electronically-resonantly enhanced wave mixing in the C2. Fortunately, neither interference is very large. By proper experimental design, interference-free CARS spectra from flame N2 can be obtained even at high soot densities. CARS signatures from N2 have been employed to map the temperature field with high spatial precision throughout a small, luminous, highly sooting, laminar propane diffusion flame. Single pulse (approx, 10 nanosecond) CARS thermometry has been demonstrated in various regions of a highly swireld, turbuelnt propane diffusion flame. Based upon these investigations, CARS continues to appear very promising for diagnostic applications to practical combustion sources. (Author).

Download or read book Advances in Coal Spectroscopy written by Henk Meuzelaar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-14 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has witnessed major advances in our understanding of the chemical composition, structure, and reactivity of the complex organic-rich fossil matter known as "coal. " Nevertheless, important scientific questions concerning molecular weight distributions, degree of crosslinking, typical duster sizes, type of interconnecting bridges, the possible role of a "mobile phase," and the nature of organic sulfur forms remain topics of heated debate. Moreover, there appears to be a notable lack of consensus regarding the overall direction and goals of structural elucidation work. Is it worthwhile to study whole coal samples, or should we separate out the various, more or less well-defined, maceral and mineral constituents before attempting to describe the structural and compositional features of coal at the molecular Ievel? Second, should there be more emphasis on key structural features and average statistical parameters, or is it necessary to identify individual chemical structures in considerable detail? From the developments of the past decade it is clear that advanced spectroscopic techniques are playing an increasingly important role in resolving difficult questions with regard to the chemical structure and composition of coal. Moreover, it has become equally clear that no single spectroscopic approach can provide all the answers but multiple techniques need to be used in a highly integrated and synergistic manner.

  • ISBN : 9401125880
  • Pages : 566 pages

Download or read book Combustings Flow Diagnostics written by D.F.G. Durão and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of papers prepared for and presented at a NATO sponsored Advanced Study Institute which was held in Montechoro, Portugal during the period 16-27 April, 1990. This Institute was attended by approximately ninety delegates from fifteen countries and followed from a related Institute held in Vimeiro, Portugal in 1987 (see the book entitled "Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines", edited by D. F. G. Dur~o, J. H. Whitelaw and P. O. Witzel. The purposes of the first Institute related closely to instrumentation for use in gas-turbine combustors and the cylinders of internal-combustion engines. These topics were also addressed in the second Institute, though in a manner which was wider ranging and chosen to demonstrate and explain the development and application of measurement methods to combusting flows in general. The papers contained in this boo~ were selected to provide the reader with a comprehensive and up-to-date view of the variety of experimental techniques available to measure in combusting flows. Included are discussions of their range and applicability, potential accuracy and ease of use. Thus, the first paper provides a brief overview and the second an indication of those aspects of combustion which should influence the choice of flow property to be measured and the technique to be used.
