Book Frontiers of High Pressure Research II Application of High Pressure to Low Dimensional Novel Electronic Materials

Download or read book Frontiers of High Pressure Research II Application of High Pressure to Low Dimensional Novel Electronic Materials written by Hans D. Hochheimer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent interactions with industrial companies it became quite obvious, that the search for new materials with strong anisotropic properties are of paramount importance for the development of new advanced electronic and magnetic devices. The questions concerning the tailoring of materials with large anisotropic electrical and thermal conductivity were asked over and over again. It became also quite clear that the chance to answer these questions and to find new materials which have these desired properties would demand close collaborations between scientists from different fields. Modem techniques ofcontrolled materials synthesis and advances in measurement and modeling have made clear that multiscale complexity is intrinsic to complex electronic materials, both organic and inorganic. A unified approach to classes of these materials is urgently needed, requiring interdisciplinary input from chemistry, materials science, and solid state physics. Only in this way can they be controlled and exploited for increasingly stringent demands oftechnology. The spatial and temporal complexity is driven by strong, often competing couplings between spin, charge and lattice degrees offreedom, which determine structure-function relationships. The nature of these couplings is a sensitive function of electron-electron, electron-lattice, and spin-lattice interactions; noise and disorder, external fields (magnetic, optical, pressure, etc. ), and dimensionality. In particular, these physical influences control broken-symmetry ground states (charge and spin ordered, ferroelectric, superconducting), metal-insulator transitions, and excitations with respect to broken-symmetries created by chemical- or photo-doping, especially in the form of polaronic or excitonic self-trapping.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disordered nature of structural arrangement in amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys gives rise to advantageous soft magnetic properties in particular from a practical application viewpoint [1]. Especially nanocrystalline alloys attract a lot of scienti?c interest because, contrary to their amorphous counterparts, their magnetic parameters do not substantially deteriorate at elevated temperatures during the process of their practical exploitation. To bene?t from their unique magnetic pr- erties, the mechanism of crystallization should be known. Here, we present the study of structural transformation of NANOPERM-type alloys by the help of Mössbauer spectrometry, conventional X-ray diffraction (XRD), and by an advanced diffraction of synchrotron radiation. 2 Experimental Alloys of the composition Fe Mo Cu B for x = 12, 15, 17, 20 prepared by 91?x 8 1 x 57 rapid quenching on a rotating wheel were analyzed in the as-cast state by Fe transmission Mössbauer spectrometry (TMS) and by conversion electron Mössbauer spectrometry (CEMS). The obtained as-quenched ribbons were about 10 mm wide and 20 ?m thick. The nanocrystalline state was achieved by annealing about 2 cm ? long samples for 1 h at temperatures up to 650 C in a vacuum. Conventional XRD was performed with Cu-K radiation in Bragg-Brentano con?guration with graphite ? monochromator in the diffracted beam. Monochromatic synchrotron radiation of 7keV(? = 0. 178 nm) provided at the KMC-2 beamline at BESSY Berlin was used for in situ examinations of structural transformations during continuous heat treatment.

Book Vibrational Spectroscopy At High External Pressures

Download or read book Vibrational Spectroscopy At High External Pressures written by John R. Ferraro and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibrational Spectroscopy at High External Pressures: The Diamond Anvil Cell presents the effects of high pressure on the vibrational properties of materials as accomplished in a diamond anvil cell (DAC). The DAC serves the dual purpose of generating the pressures and being transparent to infrared radiation, allowing the observation of changes caused by pressure. The optical probes highlighted will deal principally with infrared and Raman scattering, although some observations in the visible region will also be presented. The book begins with a discussion of the effects of pressure and pressure units. This is followed by separate chapters on the instrumentation needed to study vibrational transitions under pressure and pressure calibration and various methods used to measure pressure in the DAC. Subsequent chapters deal with applications in basic areas of inorganic, coordination, and organic compounds. These include the effects of pressure on spin states and various geometries; pressure effects on organic molecules; applications in geochemistry, conductors, forensic science, and lubricants; and miscellaneous topics such as metallic hydrogen, metallic xenon, and CuCl.

Book Frontiers of High Pressure Research

Download or read book Frontiers of High Pressure Research written by Hans D. Hochheimer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of high pressure experiments in the discovery of supercon ducting materials with a T. above liquid nitrogen temperature has demon strated the importance of such experiments. The same role holds true in the tailoring of materials for optoelectronic devices. In addition, much progress has been made recently in the search for metallic hydro gen, and the application of high pressure in polymer research has brought forth interesting results. These facts together with the suc cess of previous small size meetings (such as the "First International Conference on the Physics of Solids at High Pressure", held in 1965 in Tucson, Arizona, U. S. A. ; "High Pressure and Low Temperature Physics", held in 1977 in Cleveland, Ohio, U. S. A. ; and "Physics of Solids Under High Pressure", held in 1981 in bad Honnef, Germany), motivated us to organize a workshop with emphasis on the newest results and trends in these fields of high pressure research. Furthermore, it was intended to mix experienced and young scien tists to realize an idea best expressed in a letter by Prof. Weinstein: "I think it is an excellent idea. I have often felt that the number of excellent young researchers in the high pressure field need an opportu nity to put forward their work with due recognition. " Thanks to the support of the key speakers, we were able to achieve this goal and had more than 50\ young participants.

Book Transport and Thermal Properties of f Electron Systems

Download or read book Transport and Thermal Properties of f Electron Systems written by H. Fujii and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hiroshima Workshop on Transport and Thermal Properties of f-Electron Systems, T2PfS, was held in the hotel Greenpia Yasuura on the shores of the Seto Inland Sea near Hiroshima, Japan from August 30, to September 2, 1992, as a satellite meeting of the International Conference of Strongly Correlated Electron Systems in Sendai. The purpose of this workshop was to bring together those scientists who are actively involved in the research of 4f- and 5f-electron systems; particularly the transport and thermal properties such as electrical resistivity, Hall effect, thermoelectric power, thermal conductivity, thermal expansion and specific heat. Hence, the organizing committee limited the number of participants to 60; 25 from abroad and 35 from Japan. In the workshop, all the sessions consisted of oral presentations; 25 invited talks and 5 contributed talks, including at least 10 minutes of discussion for each presentation. The program was divided into the following five topics: [1] Kondo-lattice semiconductors, [2] superconductivity of f-electron systems, [3] anomalous transport and thermal properties of 4f- and 5f-compounds, [4] low-carrier heavy-electron systems and [5] theoretical investigation of heavy-electron and mixed-valence states. This division of topics has been retained in the organization of papers in this volume. Almost all of the invited and contributed papers are included. These papers include excellent reviews of both the recent advances and historical background of each topic. We believe this book would be a tutorial text for researchers working in the field of solid state physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the tremendous advances in the techniques and equipment for carrying out high-pressure crystallography, the application or exploration of the high-pressure variable in detailed structural studies remains rare. The chapters in this book provide a set of lecture notes and supplementary material for a course on high pressure crystallography. The material comprises state-of-the-art reviews of high-pressure experiments using X-ray and neutron diffraction techniques at synchrotron and neutron facilities and in the laboratory, as well as complementary experimental high-pressure techniques and theoretical methods for investigating matter at elevated pressures. The materials studies range from elemental solids and liquids to inorganic compounds, minerals, organic compounds, clathrates and pharmaceutical compounds, to large biological molecules such as proteins and viruses. The book provides a reference for workers in high-pressure science wishing to learn more about crystallography and for established crystallographers potentially interested in high pressure as a variable, as well as an introductory guide to new researchers in the field.
