Book The Appearance of That Which Cannot Be Seen

Download or read book The Appearance of That Which Cannot Be Seen written by Armin Linke and published by . This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 20 years Berlin-based photographer and filmmaker Armin Linke (b. 1966) has been photographing the effects of globalization, the transformation of infrastructures and the networking of post-industrial society via digital information and communication technologies. Following his recent exhibition in Milan, this substantial publication features images selected by a variety of theorists and scientists chosen by Linke. The images selected by Israeli theorist, curator and filmmaker Ariella Azoulay, French sociologist and philosopher Bruno Latour, Austrian artist/curator/media theorist Peter Weibel, American architectural theorist Mark Wigley, and British geologist Jan Zalasiewicz open up Linkes work to a variety of new readings. Linkes photographs depict the modern world as a massive profusion of data, where the material infrastructures, consisting of computer centers, data highways and server rooms, are largely invisible. A research affiliate at the MIT Visual Arts Program, Linke has exhibited extensively worldwide including the Storefront, NY, and KW Berlin.

Book The Appearance of the Form

Download or read book The Appearance of the Form written by N.J. Habraken and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-30 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985 this book explores, in four interwoven essays, the many ways human life and built form interact and the place that professional designing takes in this interaction. Together, the essays touch on a number of ideas: the idea that our position in space relative to the thing we are designing determines the methods we apply when designing it; the idea that designing is about making proposals, and is therefore a social act first of all; and the idea that agreements, consensus and above all conventions shape the act of designing things independent of their creative qualities.

Book Robert Louis Stevenson and the Appearance of Modernism

Download or read book Robert Louis Stevenson and the Appearance of Modernism written by A. Sandison and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-05-21 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite attracting the admiration of Modernists like Nabokov and Borges, Stevenson remains for many an apologist for the lost world of the romance. This is not only to misread and simplify his fiction, it is greatly to undervalue his lively, forward-looking literary essays. Strenously resisting the authority of the literary 'fathers' (though haunted by the complexities of paternity), Stevenson reveals strong affinities with emergent Modernism. It is from this perspective that Alan Sandison's latest book (the first to appear for nearly thirty years) conducts a lively and readable re-examination of this often underrated writer.

Download or read book Air s Appearance written by Jayne Elizabeth Lewis and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-11-22 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Air’s Appearance, Jayne Elizabeth Lewis enlists her readers in pursuit of the elusive concept of atmosphere in literary works. She shows how diverse conceptions of air in the eighteenth century converged in British fiction, producing the modern literary sense of atmosphere and moving novelists to explore the threshold between material and immaterial worlds. Air’s Appearance links the emergence of literary atmosphere to changing ideas about air and the earth’s atmosphere in natural philosophy, as well as to the era’s theories of the supernatural and fascination with social manners—or, as they are now known, “airs.” Lewis thus offers a striking new interpretation of several standard features of the Enlightenment—the scientific revolution, the decline of magic, character-based sociability, and the rise of the novel—that considers them in terms of the romance of air that permeates and connects them. As it explores key episodes in the history of natural philosophy and in major literary works like Paradise Lost, “The Rape of the Lock,” Robinson Crusoe, and The Mysteries of Udolpho, this book promises to change the atmosphere of eighteenth-century studies and the history of the novel.

Book The Appearance of Ignorance

Download or read book The Appearance of Ignorance written by Keith DeRose and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contextualism, the view that the epistemic standards a subject must meet in order for a claim attributing "knowledge" to her to be true do vary with context, has been hotly debated in epistemology and philosophy of language during the last few decades. This volume presents, develops, and defends contextualist solutions to two of the stickiest problems in epistemology: the puzzles of skeptical hypotheses and of lotteries. It is argued that, at least by ordinary standards for knowledge, we do know that skeptical hypotheses are false, and that we've lost the lottery. Why it seems that we don't know that they're false tells us a lot, both about what knowledge is and how knowledge attributions work. The Appearance of Ignorance is the companion volume to Keith DeRose's 2009 title The Case for Contextualism: Knowledge, Skepticism, and Context, Volume 1.

Book Decoherence and the Appearance of a Classical World in Quantum Theory

Download or read book Decoherence and the Appearance of a Classical World in Quantum Theory written by Domenico Giulini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decoherence, a concept known only to few physicists when the first edition appeared in 1996, has since become firmly established experimentally and understood theoretically, as well as widely reported in the literature. The major consequences of decoherence are the emergence of "classicality" in general, superselection rules, the border line between microscopic and macroscopic behavior in molecules and field theory, the emergence of classical spacetime, and the appearance of quantum jumps. The most important new developments in this rapidly evolving field are included in the second edition of this book, which has become a standard reference on the subject. All chapters have been thoroughly revised and updated. New fields of application now addressed span chaos theory, quantum information, neuroscience, primordial fluctuations in cosmology, black holes and string theory, experimental tests, and interpretational issues. While the major part of the book is concerned with environmental decoherence derived from a universal Schrödinger equation, later chapters address related or competing methods, such as consistent histories, open system dynamics, algebraic approaches, and collapse models.

Book All the Light We Cannot See

Download or read book All the Light We Cannot See written by Anthony Doerr and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *NOW A NETFLIX LIMITED SERIES—from producer and director Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) starring Mark Ruffalo, Hugh Laurie, and newcomer Aria Mia Loberti* Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist, the beloved instant New York Times bestseller and New York Times Book Review Top 10 Book about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris, and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel. In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the Resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge. Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times).
