Book Discerning Vocations to the Apostolic Life the Contemplative Life and the Eremitic Life

Download or read book Discerning Vocations to the Apostolic Life the Contemplative Life and the Eremitic Life written by Marie Theresa Coombs and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the spiritual journey, God's love engenders within every Christian active, contemplative, and solitary inclinations. Consequently, each person wants to do some good, to have a basic receptivity to God, and at times to be alone with God. As life unfolds, God's love also calls forth within a person an overriding attraction toward one of those three orientations, which in due course impels the individual toward a corresponding vocational lifestyle: an apostolic life, a contemplative life, or an eremitic life. In this book, the authors identify the core features of those three vocational lifestyles. In light of each vocational core, they then discuss an ensemble of signs and patterns that point to an authentic calling from God. This study offers wisdom and insight to those pondering the mystery of their personal vocations, to those discerning their vocational direction, and to spiritual directors, formation personnel, ecclesial leadership, and Christian educators who accompany them in their quest.

Book Simplicity and Humility in Late Antique Christian Thought

Download or read book Simplicity and Humility in Late Antique Christian Thought written by Jaclyn L. Maxwell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social values of upper-class Christians in Late Antiquity often contrasted with the modest backgrounds of their religion's founders – the apostles – and the virtues they exemplified. Drawing on examples from the Cappadocian Fathers, John Chrysostom, and other late antique authors, this book examines attitudes toward the apostles' status as manual workers and their virtues of simplicity and humility. Due to the strong connection between these traits and low socioeconomic status, late antique bishops often allowed their own high standing to influence how they understood these matters. The virtues of simplicity and humility had been a natural fit for tentmakers and fishermen, but posed a significant challenge to Christians born into the elite and trained in prestigious schools. This volume examines the socioeconomic implications of Christianity in the Roman Empire by considering how the first wave of powerful, upper-class church leaders interpreted the socially radical elements of their religion.

  • Author : Francis Watson
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press

Download or read book An Apostolic Gospel written by Francis Watson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The so-called Epistula Apostolorum is an early gospel-like text in which the eleven apostles recount a question-and-answer session with the risen Jesus on Easter morning, intended to equip them for the worldwide mission to which they are now called. The Epistula draws selectively from the Gospels of John and Matthew, while disagreeing with its sources at a number of points and claiming definitive status for its own rendering of the apostolic gospel. This book is based on a new translation of this important but neglected text, drawing on the Coptic, Ethiopic, and Latin manuscript evidence and with variants noted in an English-language critical apparatus. Extensive additional notes are provided to clarify issues of text, translation, and exegesis. The central chapters explore major theological themes such as incarnation, resurrection, and eschatology in the light of related texts within and beyond the New Testament.
