Book Ignatius adversus Valentinianos

Download or read book Ignatius adversus Valentinianos written by Thomas Lechner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses the authenticity of the seven letters, handed down under the name of Ignatius of Antioch, and explores the wider theological context at the time of their composition. The author first examines the chronological foundations of current scholarly consensus, which on the whole favours an early second-century date for the composition of these letters, during the reign of the emperor Trajan (98-117). On the basis of his findings the author next addresses the question raised by the title of the volume: do some of the polemic passages in these letters specifically attack Valentinian gnosis? After a detailed discussion of chapters 16-20 of the Letter to the Ephesians it is shown that the Ignatian Star Hymn (Eph. 19) should be seen as a parody of Valentinian myth. The volume concludes with a study of the Regula fidei (Eph. 18,2).

Book excerpt: The Apostolic Fathers are the Christian writers from the first and second centuries who are thought to have known, some of the Apostles, or to have been so directly influenced by the apostles that their writings are considered echoes of genuine Apostolic teaching. Their writings form a link of tradition that binds these writings to those of the New Testament. Chief among the apostolic fathers are the three first-century Bishops: St. Clement of Rome, St. Ignatius of Antioch, and St. Polycarp of Smyrna, who were disciples of St. Peter and St. John. There are a number of works attributed to St. Clement although only his letter to the Corinthians (1 Clement) and possibly one of his homilies (2 Clement) are believed to be genuine. Ignatius and Polycarp also have a number of surviving letters, one of which includes the famous story of the martyrdom of Polycarp. Included in this collection is the Didache, an early doctrinal statement said to be composed by the twelve apostles before they went their separate ways to preach the gospel "to all nations." Also included is, the Epistle of Barnabas, which many have held to have been written by the Barnabas who is mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles. Some early Christian Bibles included these works, although later councils would leave them out of the canon of scripture.

Download or read book The Apostolic Fathers written by Bart D. Ehrman and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enduring and influential early Christian texts. The writings of the Apostolic Fathers give a rich and diverse picture of Christian life and thought in the period immediately after New Testament times. Some of them were accorded almost Scriptural authority in the early Church. This new Loeb edition of these essential texts reflects current idiom and the latest scholarship. Here are the Letters of Ignatius, bishop of Antioch, among the most famous documents of early Christianity; these letters, addressing core theological questions, were written to a half dozen different congregations while Ignatius was en route to Rome as a prisoner, condemned to die in the wild-beast arena. Also in this collection is a letter to the Philippian church by Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna and friend of Ignatius, as well as an account of Polycarp's martyrdom. There are several kinds of texts in the Apostolic Fathers collection, representing different religious outlooks. The manual called the Didache sets forth precepts for religious instruction, worship, and ministry. The Epistle of Barnabas searches the Old Testament, the Jewish Bible, for testimony in support of Christianity and against Judaism. Probably the most widely read in the early Christian centuries was The Shepherd of Hermas, a book of revelations that develops a doctrine of repentance.
