Book excerpt: This fourth and final volume of the Apollo Spacecraft Chronology covers a period of eight and a half years, from January 21, 1966, through July 13, 1974. The events that took place during that period included all flight tests of the Apollo spacecraft, as well as the last five Gemini flights, the AS-204 accident, the AS-204 Review Board activities, the Apollo Block II Redefinition Tasks, the manned Apollo flight program and its results, as well as further use of the Apollo spacecraft in the Skylab missions. The manned flights of Apollo, scheduled to begin in early 1967, were delayed by the tragic accident that occurred on January 27, 1967, during a simulated countdown for mission AS-204. A fire inside the command module resulted in the deaths of the three prime crew astronauts, Virgil I. Grissom, Edward H. White II, and Roger B. Chaffee. On January 28, 1967, the Apollo 204 Review Board was established to investigate the accident. It was determined that action should be initiated to reduce the crew risk by eliminating unnecessary hazardous conditions that would imperil future operations. Therefore, on April 27, a NASA Task Team-Block II Redefinition, CSM-was established to provide input on detailed design, overall quality and reliability, test and checkout, baseline specification, configuration control, and schedules.

Book excerpt: This third volume of the Apollo Spacecraft Chronology covers the sixteen-month period from October 1, 1964, to January 20, 1966. During this period the major emphasis of the program was on the detailed engineering of the three spacecraft being manufactured by North American and Grumman. All major decisions had been made and now within the confines of these decisions spacecraft must be designed and built that would safely provide transportation for men and equipment to the lunar surface and back. One of the most confining of these decisions was the agreed upon payload of the Saturn V. It was initially agreed that the design allowable weight for the Apollo spacecraft was 90 000 pounds. Included within this were the Command and Service Module, the Lunar Excursion Module, and the adapter structure. Although some relief was obtained when the conservatism in the Saturn V design was converted into additional useful performance, spacecraft weight was a continual concern in the Apollo program. This was particularly true during the period reported upon in this volume; concepts were being translated into hard design and the solution of numerous details took their toll in an upward revision of weight estimates. Weights were reported weekly in an attempt to curtail and control weight growth. Programs were instituted to reduce weight by the elimination of nonessential "niceties" and, when practical, by redesigning elements to lighter weight.

The first manned mission in the Apollo program and the first manned flight after a fire during a launch pad test killed three astronauts in early 1967, Apollo 7 helped restart NASA’s manned-spaceflight program. Known to many as a goofy, lighthearted prankster, Eisele worked his way from the U.S. Naval Academy to test pilot school and then into the select ranks of America’s prestigious astronaut corps. He was originally on the crew of Apollo 1 before being replaced due to injury. After that crew died in a horrific fire, Eisele was on the crew selected to return Americans to space. Unbeknownst to everyone, after his retirement as a technical assistant for manned spaceflight at NASA’s Langley Research Center in 1972, Eisele wrote in detail about his years in the air force and his time in the Apollo program.
