Book excerpt: Westfield Volume II covers the history of the city from the mid-nineteenth century through the late twentieth century, and highlights the accomplishments of its citizens. Locally famous Westfield residents like Joseph Buell Ely and Herbert W. Kittredge are spotlighted, as well as less well-known but equally significant contributors to the civic and social history of the city. The development of the city's infrastructure is chronicled, and important events in the community's development are illustrated. Many images in this volume were submitted by present and former residents of Westfield in response to the authors' request for vintage images. In poring through these vast submissions, authors Cramer and Ackerman have produced a second book that is destined to bring back memories and enliven interest in Westfield's fascinating past.

Book excerpt: "Abstract: This report summarizes the observations and findings of an interagency transportation assistance group (TAG) convened to discuss the long-term future of Arizona State Route 88, also known as the "Apache Trail," a historic road on the Tonto National Forest. The TAG included staff from the Volpe Center, the U.S. Forest Service, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Arizona Department of Transportation. Based on a June 2015 site visit to the Apache Trail and subsequent discussions, the Volpe Center outlined a number of potential management actions and scenarios for the road. This report described the background of the road, issues and goals noted in the site visit, as well as the management options and scenarios discussed by the TAG. It concludes by describing the TAG's recommended scenario for the Apache Trail and potential next steps."--Technical report documentation page.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The face of Arizona has changed dramatically over the centuries-but for those who know where to look, the coyote still howls, waterfalls still tumble into deep red rock canyons, and some of nature's finest handiwork is still to be seen along the backroads and byways of the state. For the open-road adventurer or the armchair tourist, Backroads of Arizona is the ideal guide to the state where antelope still roam, cowboys still ride the range, and mail is still delivered by mule train. Jim Hinckley's informative text and Kerrick James' brilliant color photography reveal the Grand Canyon State as more than just desert and towering saguaros: It is a powerful land of compelling variety where a mere sixty-mile drive can transport you from scorching sands to dense evergreen stands where deer and elk roam. Continuing on Voyageur Press' successful travel series, Backroads of Arizona takes you on more than twenty trips to the state's most notable and underappreciated sites. The book covers Arizona's plethora of awe-inspiring natural areas and national parks as well as its many historic sites, including Native American Pueblos and ancient ruins, ghost towns and vestiges of the Old West, and more. It is a fitting celebration of one of the most scenic states in the country.

Book Apache Trail

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard L. Powers
  • Publisher : Arcadia Library Editions
  • Release : 2008-12
  • ISBN : 9781531637774
  • Pages : 130 pages

Download or read book Apache Trail written by Richard L. Powers and published by Arcadia Library Editions. This book was released on 2008-12 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pres. Theodore Roosevelt once referred to the Apache Trail as "one of the most spectacular best-worth-seeing sights of the world." The once narrow, ancient foot trail built as a supply road for the construction of Roosevelt Dam has now evolved into a state highway with majestic scenic vistas and historical grandeur. Even in the 1920s, the Southern Pacific Railroad touted this road as a "must-see side trip." Each year, thousands of people venture along the trail to take a step back in time and relish the breathtaking experience of this fabulous journey. The Fish Creek Hill section remains much as it was back in the early 1900s, a narrow one-vehicle passage on an extremely steep incline that drops 900 feet within a mile along the edge of a steep cliff. Although several miles of the road are now paved, dirt portions remain that allow tourists a sense of perilous adventure.
