This book was released on 2002 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sheguiandah site on Manitoulin Island is a rare upper Great Lakes stratified Paleoindian & Archaic site, with alleged earlier cultural materials at the base of the site. The site was discovered & first excavated in the early 1950s but work was never completed and the site remained enigmatic and controversial. Reinvestigation of existing collections of site material and renewed field investigations began in 1989-1990. This book brings together available information on the site, including the re-investigations and subsequent research on the site's geological and paleoenvironmental history. It begins with a history of the initial investigations of the 1950s and continues with chapters on the role of heritage planning in the re-investigations, geoarchaeology, projectile point artefacts, Quaternary geology & stratigraphy & sedimentology of the site, upper Great Lakes climate & water level changes since 11,000 years ago and their effects on the site, the geological history of the site, and the characteristics of quartzite & other potential sources of raw material for the artefacts. The final chapter synthesizes archaeological conclusions regarding the Sheguiandah site and its contribution to the understanding of Paleoindian & subsequent occupations in the upper Great Lakes.

Book Temagami

Download or read book Temagami written by Matt Bray and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1996-08-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, the question of who owns the land of Temagami and how the land should be used has caused a debate of unparalleled intensity. For the native people, it is their lands under attack. For environmentalists from all parts of Ontario, it is a case of ecological preservation of a unique but fast-disappearing wilderness. For others, dependent upon the resource sector, it is a matter of economic survival, both individually and for their communities. In an attempt to clarify the issues surrounding Temagami, Laurentian University’s Institute of Northern Ontario Development and Research invited participants in the Temagami debate to a conference in October, 1989. What follows in this volume are eleven of the revised papers originally presented there. A balanced perspective on the issues at hand is coupled with the views of the various interest groups. Topics covered include aboriginal rights in Temagami, the development of a wilderness park system in Ontario, the management of multiple resources, the importance of tourism in Temagami and an environmentalist’s perspective.

Download or read book Geochronology in Canada written by Freleigh Fritz Osborne and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1964-12-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is made up of papers presented at a colloquium of the Geology Devision of Section III of the Royal Society of Canada at the annual meeting in Quebec, June 1963. The papers fall into two groups: in one group the validity and shortcomings of the methods of establishing the geographical time-table are discussed; and, in the other, applications of the methods to areas across Canada, and from Precambrian to recent, are described. The geological time-table has been built up from the record of the rocks and is based on the law of superposition, a fact that is pointed out in the first paper of this volume. The chronological value of fossils, palaeomagnetism as a means of dating geological events, the limitations of radiometric dating, and other pertinent matters are here dealth with by a group of well-known authorities. These scientific disquisitions will be of great importance to geologists everywhere. This work should be of special interest to those engaged in research on the history of the earth, particularly in relation to the nature, the causes, and the time of an event. It will also serve as a valuable reference to practising geologists in government or industry, to university departments of geology, and to geological consultants. Royal Society of Canada, "Special Publications" Series, no. 8.

Book The Archaeology of New York State

Download or read book The Archaeology of New York State written by William A. Ritchie and published by Doubleday. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most complete account of ancient man in the New York area ever published in one volume, this book traces a rich, 8000-year story of human prehistory. Beginning with the first known inhabitants, Paleo-Indian hunters who lived approximately 7000 B.C., the author gives a detailed chronological account of the complex of cultural units that have existed in the area, culminating in the Iroquois tribes encountered by the European colonists at the dawn of the seventeenth century. All of the major archaeological sites in the region are described in detail and representative artifacts from all the major cultural units are illustrated in over 100 plates and drawings. The entire account is informed by the most recently obtained radio-carbon dates. In addition to giving much new, previously unpublished information, the author has synthesized all earlier published material and from this he has drawn as many inferences as the material affords regarding the nature of these early inhabitants, where they came from, and how they lived. Each cultural unit is systematically described: its discovery and naming; its ecological and chronological setting; the physical characteristics of the related people; economy; housing and settlement pattern; dress and ornament; technology; transportation; trade relationships; warfare; esthetic and recreational activities; social and political organization; mortuary customs; and religio-magical and ceremonial customs.
