Download or read book The Antiquities of the Christian Church Classic Reprint written by Rev. Lyman Coleman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Antiquities of the Christian Church IN preparing the following summary of the rites and institutions of Ancient Christianity, the author has sought to make it intelligible to the English reader; and, at the same time, to present to the theo logical student a convenient book of reference, and to the scholar and antiquary a guide in his more extended and original investigations. German authors, with a provoking reliance upon the scholarship Of those who may consult their pages, are accustomed to overspread them with original quotations from the dead languages, and refer ences to writers in every tongue, so that even the practised scholar but darkly threads his way through the endless mazes of their works. Much therefore remains for humbler minds in selecting, arranging, translating and condensing, before the researches of these great men can be made available to the mass of the reading public. This task, in the absence Of a better work, has been attempted in the preparation of the following pages; and in the execution of it the author has endea voted to perform the service only Of a translator and compiler. U sider further, that psalmody was al film ways esteemed a considerable part mu of devotion, and upon that account was usually, _if not always, performed by those that were engaged in it, in the standing posture. Cassian indeed seems to make an exception in the way of the monasteries of Egypt: but his exception helps to clear the con trary rule, and shows also that their devotion was in the main performed in the standing posture. For he says, though by reason of their continual fast ings and labour night and day, they were unable to stand all the time, while twelve psalms were read ing, yet they that read in course, always stood up to read: and at the last psalm, they all stood up and repeated it alternately, adding the Gloria Patri at the end. In other places it was always the custom to stand, as is plain not only from this ex ception, but from the testimony of St. Austin,0 who Speaks of the psalmody as an act of devotion, which all the people performed standing in the church. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origines Ecclesiasticae, or the Antiquities of the Christian Church, Vol. 4 of 8: And Other Works I have no further dispute with the doctor neither, about the Churches of the Reformation. We are agreed, that the Lutheran Churches are all of the same opinion with the Greeks, and allow lay-persons to baptise in cases of neces sity. Zuinglius did the same, and his followers did not much depart from his opinion. The Palatine Churches forbid the rebaptisation of those, who are baptised by laymen in a grand dissipation of the Church, if Alting, an eminent pro fessor among them, knew their sense in such an exigency. The French and Dutch Churches are of the contrary opi nion, and order all persons to be rebaptised that are baptised by laymen in any case whatsoever. Calvin was of the same opinion with Alting, that lay-baptism might be admitted without rebaptisation in a grand dissipation of the Church. And what the doctor quotes from him, only respects order in a quiet and peaceable state of the Church. The doctor will have it also, that the Scotch Church followed the French at the Reformation: and though he does not prove it from any piece of their discipline, or from Knox, or any private writer; for I think Knox's Book of Discipline, in Bishop Spots ood, has nothing about it: yet I will not contend with him about this particular, having as little proof against his assertion as he has for it, and it would be only to light in the dark, to say any thing further without authority upon it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the Antiquities of the Church A few words are necessary to explain the extent of the adaption to which the original has been subjected. Guericke, as a Lutheran, maintains the original equality of the Presbyterate and Episcopate, and ascribes to the existing episcopate an origin, though only not coeval with, yet still posterior to the Apostles' times. The English Church in the Preface to her Ordinal asserts, that "it is evident to all men diligently reading the Holy Scriptures, and ancient Authors, that from the Apostles' times there have been these orders of Ministers in Christ's Church: Bishops, Priests, and Deacons." As an office-bearer in that Church, the translator could not gainsay, nor give currency to any gainsaying of, the Church's teaching. In the sections, therefore, which bear upon the Episcopate alterations and omissions have been made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. For though some of the ancients lay the doctrine of the Nicolaitans to his charge; yet, as I show in one of the preceding Books, a great many others, particularly Clemens Alexandrinus, Ense bins, Theodoret, and St. Austin, excuse him, and say, The doctrine was none of his, but only taken up by those who pretended to be his followers, grounded upon some mistaken words of his, which had no such meaning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origines Ecclesiasticae, Vol. 1 of 8: Or the Antiquities of the Christian Church, and Other Works I have the more reason to hope for this, because out of your great good nature and condescension, your Lordship has always been an encourager of the undertaking, as 1 have been made sensible by happy experiment, to in many years distant correspondence with you. The work, I hope, is of general use, and will meet with a general acceptance among all those, who are without prejudice true lovers of ancient learning. A noble lord was once pleased to tell me, he had sent it into Scotland by the hands of a great man of the assembly: though what approbation it meets with there, I cannot say. But I can speak it with more satisfaction, that our worthy primate was once pleased to acquaint me in private conversation, that he himself had sent it to the professors of Geneva, who returned him their thanks, together with their approbation. And if it be well accepted there, there is some reason to hope it may be accepted in most other Protestant Churches, and be a little means to bring them to a nearer union to the Church of England in some points, for which some parts of the work are particularly designed. It is hard, again, that he could not have referred his readers to the same place of my book, or his own epitome, where they might have found a much better account of them. But this gentleman was to magnify his own Index, and make his readers believe, that he had done great feats and wonders in discovering the tenets of ancient heretics, where I had been silent, or but lightly touched upon them; though by these instances the reader will now be able to judge of the perfection and excellency of his performance.
