Book The Sale of Misattributed Artworks and Antiques at Auction

Download or read book The Sale of Misattributed Artworks and Antiques at Auction written by Anne Laure Bandle and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The glamour and mystery of the art auction, gathering interested buyers from across the globe, makes it one of the most fascinating marketplaces in existence. 'Sleepers', artworks or antiques that have been undervalued and mislabelled due to an expert's oversight and consequently undersold, appear regularly. This fascinating new book provides the first extensive study of the phenomenon of sleepers through an in-depth analysis of the contractual relationships, liability and remedies that arise in the context of auction sales. The Sale of Misattributed Artworks and Antiques at Auction begins with examination of the creation of sleepers and the process of attribution of artworks and antiques at auction. This is followed by a comparative analysis of the law governing auctioneer's liability in Switzerland, England and the United States and a critical assessment of the risks and drawbacks of the current practical and legal regime. The book concludes with an original and pragmatic solution to the challenge of addressing and settling sleeper disputes at auction, including model terms that auction houses can directly adopt in their business terms. This insightful new book will be of interest to lawyers, auction houses and anyone involved in the authentication or sale of artworks. It will also provide a valuable resource for academics and students in law, anthropology and arts.

Book An Old Story

    Book Details:
  • Author : Matt Zachowski
  • Publisher : Independently Published
  • Release : 2021-08-21
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 123 pages

Download or read book An Old Story written by Matt Zachowski and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-08-21 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a "middle market" collector for more than 25 years, I have gained considerable insight into the market for American antiques through meticulous research, conversations with leading dealers and auction house specialists, and my own personal experience. Over that time I have been able to pierce the veil that masks the secrets of the auction houses and dealer community. This book sheds light on that mysterious domain by recounting a series of personal collecting experiences, in order to share what I have learned with the buyers and collectors of the future. While the internet has brought transparency to numerous markets that historically operated in the shadows, the market for American antiques remains opaque to all but professional dealers and major collectors. Subtle differences between similar objects, carefully disguised repairs and restorations, material that has been through auction without selling -- all of these things can have a dramatic effect on the value of an object but are imperceptible to the average auction-goer or retail buyer. The lack of transparency in these and other areas, including the inner workings of the auctions themselves, results in many buyers overpaying for antiques that are not entirely what they purport to be. To date there has been no attempt to write a book that encompasses both the aesthetic and financial sides of the antiques trade. Books like Fine Points of American Furniture and The Israel Sack Collection discuss and depict outstanding examples from an aesthetic point of view, while Fake, Fraud or Genuine discusses how to recognize objects that have been modified or made up from scratch. But none includes a discussion of the financial implications of finding a masterpiece or a made-up piece and everything in between. In that respect the book will augment the existing literature on the subject, making it an important addition to the available research.

Book Neat Pieces

Download or read book Neat Pieces written by and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neat Pieces is a detailed, extensively illustrated survey of the major forms and makers of the "plain style" of furniture made and used by Georgians in the 1800s. Simply designed, solidly constructed of local woods, and usually unadorned, such pieces were used daily by their owners for storage, sleeping, eating, and more. Today, this furniture is read by historians, folklorists, and other experts for clues into a past way of life. It is also prized by museums, antiques dealers and auction houses, and furniture appraisers, collectors, and makers. Neat Pieces first appeared as the companion volume to the Atlanta History Center's seminal 1983 exhibit of the same name. The exhibit featured 126 exemplary pieces of furniture, including chairs, tables, huntboards, washstands, and candlestands. Each of them is described and illustrated in this book. Photographs in the original edition of Neat Pieces were black-and-white; here they are color. A new foreword by Deanne Levison looks at related publications and exhibits of the subsequent two decades. The introduction, by William W. Griffin, provides information on furniture forms, nomenclature, and finishes. Also included in the book is a list of more than twelve hundred nineteenth-century Georgia furniture craftsmen, with key details of their lives and work. 126 exemplary pieces of furniture (including chairs, tables, huntboards, washstands, and candlestands) 172 color photographs, 17 black-and-white photographs Information on furniture forms, nomenclature, and finishes Details about more than twelve hundred nineteenth-century Georgia furniture craftsmen
