Book excerpt: In the period between the councils of Nicea and Chalcedon in the fourth and fifth centuries, the faithful in the churches of the ecclesiastical district of Antioch were the beneficiaries of the ministry of the Word from distinguished pastors. Included in this ministry were homilies on the Old Testament by John Chrysostom and written commentaries by his mentor Diodore and his fellow student Theodore, and later by Theodoret. Though the biblical text was admittedly Jewish in origin, "the text and the meaning are ours," claimed Chrysostom; and the great bulk of extant remains reveals the pastoral priority given to this often obscure material. Students and exegetes of the Old Testament and its individual authors and books will be introduced here to Antioch1s distinctive approach and interpretation by commentators reading their local form of the Greek Bible. In the course of this survey, readers will gain an insight also into Antioch1s worldview and its approach to the person of Jesus, to soteriology, morality and spirituality.

Slee argues that a particular problem was the celebration of the Eucharist, since some Jewish Christians felt that the table-fellowship this involved inevitably brought the risk of contamination (because of Gentile contact with idolatry). She suggests this was the subject debated at the Jerusalem conference described in Acts 15 and Galatians 2, and it was the eventual decision of the Antioch church to hold separate Eucharists that led to Paul's break with the church (Gal 2:11-14). Thus even at the end of the first century CE the Antioch church was still divided on the issue.

Book excerpt: Eusebius praises the pastoral fidelity of the primitive pastors, in their unwearied labours to protect their flocks from the heresies with which Satan contrived to endanger the souls of believers. By exhortations and admonitions, and then again by oral discussions and refutations, contending with the heretics themselves, they were prompt to ward off the devouring beasts from the fold of Christ. Such is the praise due to Theophilus, in his opinion; and he cites especially his lost work against Marcion as "of no mean character." He was one of the earliest commentators upon the Gospels, if not the first; and he seems to have been the earliest Christian historian of the Church of the Old Testament. His only remaining work, here presented, seems to have originated in an "oral discussion," such as Eusebius instances. But nobody seems to accord him due praise as the founder of the science of Biblical Chronology among Christians, save that his great successor in modern times, Abp. Usher, has not forgotten to pay him this tribute in the Prolegomena of his Annals.

The significance of this lies in the fact that the empirical evidence, including the population at the time the number of those who were forced to convert and the number of those who were killed at the time, will allow the recognition of this Syriac/Aramaic Genocide. This book commences with a brief historical background on the origin of Christianity in this region and the historical background of the Syriac(n) Orthodox Church, leading to an explanation of the atrocities at the hands of the Ottoman Empire, providing a backdrop for the understanding of the context at the time, and concluding with some insights of the latest atrocities against the same people in parts of the Middle East. These are actions taken by patriarchs and people to face such ongoing atrocities.
