Book Anti Slavery and Reform Papers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Anti Slavery and Reform Papers Classic Reprint written by Henry David Thoreau and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anti-Slavery and Reform Papers The character and Opinions of Henry David Thoreau have for the most part been a stumbling-block to the judgment of his critics. As the early naturalists were puzzled to account for the peculiar structure of the bat, which did not readily adapt itself to their established system of classification, so the literary critics have been perplexed and baffled by the elusive qualities of this unique personality, who fiits unclassified along the con fines of civilization and wildness. One who was bred to no profession; who never married; who lived alone; who never went to church; who never voted; who re fused to pay a tax to the State; who ate no flesh, who drank no wine, who never knew the use of tobacco and though a naturalist, used neither trap nor gun, -it is evident that such a man must appear unreasonable and contumacious to those who have never seriously ques tioned the shibboleths of social order and respectability. Book The Anti Slavery Movement Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anti-Slavery Movement Ladies and Gentlemen: Had I consulted my own health, or the advice of my physician, I should have been elsewhere, and otherwise employed this evening. I am not well, and have not been so for several weeks. I have usually come to this platform to lecture on slavery - that darkest and hugest of all wrongs - the vilest (in the language of John Wesley) that ever saw the sun. But it has pleased the Rochester Ladies' Anti-Slavery Society to have presented here, during the winter, almost every phase of that terrible wrong; and I have, therefore, selected my topic in view of that tact. It will, probably, amount to the same thins; in the end. Some one has, happily, said, that it matters very little which path the traveller may take; he has but to go forward to go round the world. In like manner it may be said, that it matters little which path of inquiry a man may pursue, or which great moral or spiritual fact he may investigate; he has but to honestly persevere to find himself, at last, at the portals of the whole universe of truth, and speedily walking amidst its golden glories. The subject of my lecture this evening is, the nature, character, and history of the anti-slavery movement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of Principles: A Study of the Heroism and Eloquence of the Anti-Slavery Conflict The Western Continent is not large, but it holds more than half the farm land of the planet, and it is already evident that the United States and Canada, with their free in stitutions, will indirectly and directly control the thousand millions of people that will soon live between the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, and Cape Horn. The one question of the hour is how to make all the coming mil lions patriots towards their country, scholars towards the intellect, obedient citizens towards the laws of nature and God. Our national peril is Mammonism and the sordid pursuit of gold. Our fathers came hither in pursuit of God and liberty, - not gold and territory. Sixty of our present ninety millions of people have entered the earthly scene since the Civil War. Our young men and women, and the children of foreign born peoples need to open the pages of history, setting forth the great men and events of the anti-slavery epoch in this land. Book The Anti Slavery Revolution in America Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Anti Slavery Revolution in America Classic Reprint written by Eliakim Littell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-02 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anti-Slavery Revolution in America The construction of a government for the colonies, which had declared and main tained their independence of England, began under a natural reaction. Washington, in a letter to Henry Laurens (july 10, 1782) wrote: That spirit of freedom, which, at the commencement of this contest, would have gladly sacrificed everything to the attainment of its object, has long since subsided, and every selfish passion has taken its place. It is not the public but pri vate interest which influences the genera ity of mankind, nor can the Americans any longer boast of an exception. This was, as we have said, natural; the ravages of war, and the debt created by it, must make trade paramount, and under that and the vices which follow in the train of war, the fiery lava of revolution must cool down and harden into the provisions of self-interest and the enactments of economy. A late con servative orator of New England sneered at the Declaration of Independence as the passionate manifesto of a revolutionary war, and appealed from its glittering generali ties to the wary compromises of the Con stitution it has only been amid the fires of another revolution that those glittering gen eralities have been revealed as, to use Mr. Emerson's phrase, blazing ubiquities. The great motives which prevailed to bring about the Convention of 1787, whose object was to supersede the loose articles of confedera tion and establish a more perfect Union, were apparently the greater security of all economic interests, and a more complete combination against any attempt at a re covery of the States on the part of England. Book American Slavery

Download or read book American Slavery written by Jonathan Ward and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Slavery: And the Means of Its Abolition More than forty years ago the writer of the following pages read Wilberforce's publications on the slave trade, in which were described the various methods of procuring the slaves in Africa, the horrors of the "middle passage," and their cruel treatment in the West Indies. In perusing these statements of that great philanthropist and friend of the injured African race, his feelings became, in some measure, enlisted in favor of the colored people of our land, and in opposition to the slavery upheld by our nation. He was never sensible of feeling the prejudice against color, so often manifested; but, in his intercourse with colored persons, treated them, as he would others. And having them for many years as neighbors, and, not unfrequently, as hired help, they were admitted to eat with the family at the same table. In 1824 he was invited to attend a political celebration on the 4th of July. In declining the invitation, he noticed the inconsistency of our conduct in celebrating our liberty, founded upon the principle that all men are created free and equal, and proclaiming this "self-evident truth," and yet holding hundreds of thousands of our fellow men in degrading bondage. The next year, he was requested to preach on the 4th of July. The sermon was, by request, printed. The following extract will show the writer's views respecting American slavery. "Our conduct in relation to the Africans has been most inconsistent, absurd, and criminal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book No Compromise with Slavery

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from No Compromise With Slavery: An Address Delivered in the Broadway Tabernacle, New York, February 14, 1854 I. I am a believer in that portion of the Declara tion of American Independence in which it is set forth, as among self-evident - truths, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Hence, I am an Abolitionist. Hence, I cannot but regard oppression in every form - and most of all, that which turns a man into a thing - with indigna tion and abhorrence. 'not to cherish these feelings would be recreancy to principle. They who desire me to be dumb on the subject of Slavery, unless I will open my mouth in its defence, ask me to give the lie to my professions, to degrade my manhood.
