Anna Sewell was born in Norfolk, and had a brother named Philip, who was a construction engineer in Europe. At the age of 14, Ana suffered a fall while walking home from school in the rain, injuring her two ankles.Due to poor treatment of injuries, she lost the ability to walk and stay upright for the rest of her life. Crippled as a child, Anna began learning about horses in the early years of her life, spending many hours carrying her father. to and from the station where he moved to work. The local Tracy Park estate, which is now a golf club, was said to have been the inspiration for the "Birtwick Park" mentioned in the book.
