Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Medical theory and practice of the 1700s developed rapidly, as is evidenced by the extensive collection, which includes descriptions of diseases, their conditions, and treatments. Books on science and technology, agriculture, military technology, natural philosophy, even cookbooks, are all contained here. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Download or read book Figures of Authority written by Peter Becker and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about authority, more precisely, about figures of authority. The editors have put together an international group of renowned scholars to discuss the emergence of modern notions of authority from different angles. Modern authority is no longer legitimated by status and social position, but rather by institutional affiliation and performance. To research the genealogy and intricacies of this kind of authority, the chapters in this volume cast a closer look at the various institutional actors on whom authority has been bestowed. The authors use a case study approach to look at the instances in which modern authority emerged, was ridiculed, contested, or even failed. Taken together, the individual contributions shed new light on the intricate relationship between the subjects and their organisations; they challenge any Whig historiography of rationalisation and modernisation, and they help us to rethink the inter-relationship between modern and even postmodern institutional arrangements on the one hand, and their subjects on the other.

Book Seeing the Animal Whole

    Book Details:
  • Author : Craig Holdrege
  • Publisher : SteinerBooks
  • Release : 2021-02-16
  • ISBN : 1584209046

Download or read book Seeing the Animal Whole written by Craig Holdrege and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We conceive of the individual animal as a small world, existing for its own sake, by its own means. Every creature is its own reason to be. All its parts have a direct effect on one another, a relationship to one another, thereby constantly renewing the circle of life. Thus, we are justified in considering every animal physiologically perfect." --Goethe Every animal on earth has its own unique character --the slow sloth, the burrowing mole, the towering giraffe, the huge but flexible elephant. In vivid portrayals of nine different animals, Craig Holdrege shows how all of an animal's features are interconnected and reveal the animal as a whole. Moreover, every animal intersects with and influences the larger environment in dynamic ways. Seeing the Animal Whole provides a nuanced sense for what it means to be a living being. With the open-ended question "Who are you?" and with the will to let the animals themselves be his guide, Holdrege avoids the pitfalls of mechanistic and anthropomorphic perspectives that skew our concepts of animals and even lead to their mistreatment. This book presents an integrative view of animals and nature that you won't find elsewhere. The author presents a different way of seeing and relating to nature, leading to a groundbreaking understanding of animal development and evolution as creative processes with the animals as active participants. Further evolution of life on earth depends largely on human activity, and this book shows a way to learn from nature's living qualities so we can further --rather than disrupt --the health of the planet --which belongs to all of its inhabitants. And that matters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is intended for anyone interested in the actual behavior and nature of animals and the world we live in, and presents a good deal of ethological and mythological material. It is meant to be more than a mere compilation of facts. Caspari's is a holistic approach to the world. By contemplating the significance of our fellow creatures, and how everything in our universe is linked, it is the author's hope that we can have a more whole, and more healing view of the world."--Jacket.
