Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Animal Mind: A d104-Book of Comparative Psychology The advance of comparative psychology during the past nine years has been remarkable. In preparing a second edition of this book I have tried to include every newly discovered fact of the first importance, but the literature is now so extensive that in order to keep the bibliography within reasonable limits, I have had to exer cise more selection than I did in preparing the bibliography for the first edition. For like reasons, the text of the book does not enter so fully into detail in describing the results of a particular investigation as was possible when the material at hand was so much less in amount. More than half the book has been completely rewritten, including the chapters on Vision, on Spatially Determined Reactions, and on The Modification of Conscious Pro cesses by Individual Experience. I hope that the edition represents an advance upon its predecessor, not only by including many newly ascertained facts, but also by pre senting its subject matter in more logical form. • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book The Animal Mind written by James L. Gould and published by Times Books. This book was released on 1994 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, James and Carol Gould go in search of the animal mind. Taking a fresh look at the evidence on animal capacities for perception, thought, and language, the Goulds show how scientists attempt to distinguish actions that go beyond the innate or automatically learned. They provide captivating, beautifully-illustrated descriptions of a number of clever and curious animal behaviors - some revealed to be more or less preprogrammed, some seemingly proof of a well-developed mental life. The Goulds conclude by examining what animal consciousness studies have revealed about one species in particular: ourselves. Here these expert authors, who once counted themselves among the skeptics, show just how much opinions have changed. They suggest that human and animal consciousness may differ in degree of complexity, but not necessarily in kind, and that the study of other animal minds can tell us much about our own. It is a provocative closing for this examination of one of modern science's most controversial topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative psychology, the multidisciplinary study of animal behavior and psychology, confronts the challenge of how to study animals we find cute and easy to anthropomorphize, and animals we find odd and easy to objectify, without letting these biases negatively impact the science. In this Element, Kristin Andrews identifies and critically examines the principles of comparative psychology and shows how they can introduce other biases by objectifying animal subjects and encouraging scientists to remain detached. Andrews outlines the scientific benefits of treating animals as sentient research participants who come from their own social contexts and with whom we will be in relationship. With discussions of science's quest for objectivity, worries about romantic and killjoy theories, and debates about chimpanzee cognition between primatologists who work in the field and those in the lab, Andrews shows how scientists can address the different biases through greater integration of the subdisciplines of comparative psychology.
