Download or read book The Sufi Message Volume 4 written by Hazrat Inayat Khan and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is rich in both quantity and quality. It offers beautiful insights into the world of the mind in its relation to the body on the one hand, and to the soul on the other. Interestingly, in the conception of Hazrat Inayat Khan, the mind includes the heart: thinking and feeling are not separate. The matter is discussed from three different angles. In the Book of Health Hazrat Inayat Khan presents a picture of health and healing which rises above the controversies between traditional and 'western' professionals. Moreover, it appeals directly to both ordinary man and healers. It sets forth the basic laws governing the divine healing power as well as several methods for its application. Quite another perspective is offered in Mental Purification. This collection of papers deals with the workings and hygiene of the mind and heart. One comes to the understanding of how to "manage" the mind, both for living everyday life and for spiritual development. Rather it implies how leaving the world physically or mentally. Rather it implies how to deal with life and yet keep your balance by proper attunement. The Mind-world expands on this subject matter resulting in a sort of travel guide` through the world of the mind. Although it is highly practical, yet it never substitutes for your own options and decisions. It is like a foundation on which to build your individual life. Sufi Hazrat Inayat Khan (Baroda 1982-Delhi 1927) provides a beautiful guidebook for your inner path. It contains neither prescriptions nor do's and don'ts. You may be provided with insight and understanding which may be as a welcome in the circle of Sufi friends, or as a silent companion on your further way. "The soul is called Atman, which means happiness or bliss itself. It is not that happiness belongs to the soul; it is that the soul itself is happiness." This inspiring book covers almost all aspects of the life of someone who chooses to go the way of self-unfoldment and self-realization. It refers to the struggle of life, its intoxication and its deeper side. The aim, meaning and purpose of life are discussed. What is wanted in life? Essential for the answer to this question are concepts like the art and development of personality, attitude, interest and indifference, purity of life, and the ideal. All these are discussed in separate chapters dealing with these items in an inspiring and uplifting manner, nevertheless remaining realistic as to daily life's requirements. Life is presented as an opportunity to gain experience both within and without, stressing their mutual interdependence. The second half of the book discusses, amongst others, inner life, the kingly road from limitation to perfection, and the stages of his destiny, in the context of the continuity of life. This the fourth volume of the Sufi Message by Hazrat Inayat Khan. It includes three works- the first, Healing is a collection of teachings on spiritual healing. In this work, the Suri mystic discusses the basic laws governing the mind's influence on the body, which he considers greater than that of the physical body on the mental existence, and he emphasises the need for a stronger awareness of the possibilities which spiritual healing can offer. Mental Purification is a collection of lectures on the working and hygiene of the mind in relation to the spirit. This part conveys in a beautiful way the synthesis that can be gained between inner life and life in the world. The volume concludes with the Mind World- which in the terms of the Sufi poets is called 'The palace of Mirrors' - an expression which Inayat Khan takes as symbolising on different levels, the whole of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Animal Kingdom, Vol. 13: Arranged in Conformity With Its Organization, by the Baron Cuvier, Member of the Institute of France, &C. &C. &C., With Supplementary Additions to Each Order But the joints which compose the body have not always this sort of articulation: they are most usually united merely by flexible membranes, or emboxed one Within the other; and then their motions are more varied, but do not possess the same force. The system of organs on which the articulated animals are most similar to each other, is that of the nerves. Their brain, situated on the oesophagus, and furnishing nerves to the parts which adhere to the head, is very small. Two cords, which embrace the oesophagus, are continued' along the belly, uniting, from space to space, into double knots or ganglia, from which proceed the nerves of the body and Of the limbs. Each of these ganglia performs the functions of a brain, for the surrounding parts, and suffices to preserve their sensibility for a certain time, when the animal has been dividedf If we add to this, that the jaws of these animals, when they have any, are always lateral, and move from without to Within, and not from top to bottom, and that there has not yet been discovered in any of them a distinct organ of smell, we shall have pretty nearly expressed all that may be said of them in general. But the existence of the organs of hearing; the existence, number, and form of those of sight; the product, and the mode of generation it the nature of respiration; the existence of the organs of circulation; and even the colour of the blood, present great variations, which it will be necessary to study in the different sub-divisions. A remarkable discovery on this subject is that of M. Herold, that in the egg of the crustacea and arachnida, the vitellus communicates with the interior by the back. See his dissertation on the egg of spiders, Marburg, 1824, and that of M. Rathke on the egg of the Astaci, Leipzig, 1829. Book THE INDIA THEY SAW VOL 4

Download or read book THE INDIA THEY SAW VOL 4 written by Meenakshi Jain and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the commercial and political expansion of Europe in the eighteenth century; there was a remarkable increase in the number of Europeans visiting India; not merely for trade but also in search of her fabled ancient wisdom. The European rediscovery of India's cultural heritage led to the emergence of Orientalist scholarship and a belief that India was the original home of the arts and sciences. In India the great patron of Indie studies was the Governor-General; Warren Hastings. He gathered around himself a select group that included Charles Wilkins; Nathaniel Halhed; and William Jones; the most famous of the Orientalists. But the growing political ascendancy of the British in India dampened the early exuberance for Indie studies. As conquerors; the British began to feel the need to justify their conquests and exalt their own race and religion. Several other forces were at work to turn the tide against India. The Industrial Revolution in England had created the need to convert India into a market for machine-made British goods. Meanwhile; the Evangelicals pressed for the Christianization and Anglicization of India; which; they felt; would lead to permanent British rule and also change Indian lifestyle to the advantage of British manufacturers. The Evangelicals allied with the Utilitarians to launch a tirade against Indian culture and force the retreat of the Orientalists. This volume covers the period from A.D. 1700 to 1850. A significant number of travellers visited India during this century and a half. The accounts available to us are primarily those written in English. A considerable amount of the work in French and the rich accounts of the early Danish missionaries on the Coromandel Coast; for instance; have yet to be translated into English. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Animal Kingdom, Vol. 4 of 4: Arranged in Conformity With Its Organization, Serving as a Foundation for the Natural History of Animals, and an Introduction to Comparative Anatomy; Insecta-Zoophytes The most alluring side of the science is first discussed, viz. That which belongs to the manners and economy of insects, and where there was the least room for originality. They enter more fully, how ever, into the other branch, viz. That which belongs to the amatomi cal, physiological, and technical parts of the work. As far as regards the general physiology and internal anatomy, they have done little more than bring together and combine the Observations of other naturalists who have attended to these branches but the external anatomy they have examined for themselves, through the whole class of insects. Here they are assuredly entitled to the praise of having thrown much new light upon the subject, particularly by pointing out and giving names to many parts never before noticed. This fourth double volume of the Notebooks covers the years 1819 through 1826. The range of Coleridge's reading, his endless questioning, and his recondite sources continue to fascinate the readers. Included here are drafts and full versions of the later poems. Many passages reflect the technological interests that led to Coleridge's writing of Aids of Reflection, later to become an important source for the Transcendentalists. Another development in this volume is the startling expansion of Coleridge's interest in "the theory of life" and in chemistry--the laboratory chemistry of the Royal Institution fo Great Britain and the theoretical chemistry of German transcendentalists such as Okea, Steffens, and Oersted. Also contained in this volume is an important section on the meaning of marriage. Kathleen Coburn is Professor Emeritus at Victoria College of the University of Toronto. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Santosh Krinsky has endeavored to make Sri Aurobindo's teachings relevant and readable to the very different audience today, without compromising the essence of his teaching. I do not think that any other writer in America has better represented Aurobindo's teachings today than Santosh. This is a difficult task to be sure but one that he has been able to do consistently and with depth of thought. The reader is guided through short episodes that can constitute a simple yet direct immersion into the heart of Aurobindo's teachings. Krinsky has approached The Synthesis of Yoga in four volumes of which this current book is the fourth and final one, which addresses Sri Aurobindo's unique contribution of the Yoga of Self-Perfection. This helps the reader understand the depths of Yoga and how it can be used to make fundamental changes in our being and character that are more important and enduring than mere outer changes in our body. - David Frawley, author of Yoga and Ayurveda
