Book The Spanish Caribbean and the Atlantic World in the Long Sixteenth Century

Download or read book The Spanish Caribbean and the Atlantic World in the Long Sixteenth Century written by Ida Altman and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-06-01 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish Caribbean and the Atlantic World in the Long Sixteenth Century breaks new ground in articulating the early Spanish Caribbean as a distinct and diverse group of colonies loosely united under Spanish rule for roughly a century prior to the establishment of other European colonies. In the sixteenth century no part of the Americas was more diverse; international; or as closely tied to Spain, the islands of the Atlantic, western Africa, and the Spanish American mainland than the Caribbean. The Caribbean experienced rapid growth during this period, displayed considerable ethnic and religious diversity, developed extensive networks of exchange both within and beyond the region, and played an important role in the broader Spanish colonization of the Americas. Contributors address topics such as the role of religious orders, the development of transatlantic and regional commercial systems, insular and regional political dynamics in relation to imperial objectives, the formation of colonial society, and the effects on Caribbean colonial society of the importation and incorporation of large numbers of indigenous captives and enslaved Africans.

Book The Anglo Spanish War 1655 1660

Download or read book The Anglo Spanish War 1655 1660 written by Paul Sutton and published by Helion and Company. This book was released on 2021-09-08 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March 1969 the two giants of the Communist world – the People’s Republic of China and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics – came to blows over the control of a remote and uninhabited island on their mutual border in a conflict that risked barely controlled escalation, and in which the USSR gave consideration to the use of nuclear weapons. In 2021, Helion & Company published two books by Harold Orenstein and Dmitry Ryabushkin: The Sino-Soviet Border War of 1969 Volume 1: The Border Conflict that almost Sparked a Nuclear War and The Sino-Soviet Border War of 1969 Volume 2: Confrontation at Lake Zhalanashkol August 1969. These volumes relied largely on the Soviet accounts and presented the Soviet perspective on this confrontation. When Brothers Fight: Chinese Eyewitness Accounts of the Sino-Soviet Border Battles 1969 aims to fill the gap with accounts from Chinese veterans who took part in these border wars. The authors have selected two of the best-known incidents of the period, the Battle of Zhenbao (Damansky) Island (March–May 1969) and the Tielieketi (Lake Zhalanashkol) Incident (13 August 1969), as the focus for this book. This is an important episode of the Cold War that deserves greater exposure. This brief war marks a turning point between the two Communist giants and in one way or another, lay the foundation for international politics for the next 50 years. In 1972, China moved towards the US/Western camp by signing the Three Joint Communiqués, normalising relations between the US and China and establishing a full diplomatic relationship in 1979. When Brothers Fight: Chinese Eyewitness Accounts of the Sino-Soviet Border Battles 1969 is richly illustrated with photographs and artworks from the period of the Sino-Soviet confrontation as well as specially commissioned artworks.

Book The Spanish American War 1895 1902

Download or read book The Spanish American War 1895 1902 written by Joseph Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fought in both Caribbean and Pacific and turning on America's superior naval strength, this short but decisive war had momentous consequences internationally. It ended Spain's imperial power, and the US emerged for the first time as an active force in world affairs, acquiring -- amidst much domestic controversy -- an empire of her own in the Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico, and Cuba (whose struggle against Spain had sparked the war). Heavy with implications for twentieth-century America, the war is explored in its widest context in this engrossing and impressive study.

Download or read book Conquest and Commerce written by James Lang and published by New York : Academic Press. This book was released on 1975 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In English America, colonial society did not simmer for several decades in the face of unpopular reforms. Reaction to the Stamp Act was almost immediate. The assemblies played a central role in shaping this reaction. The Crown attacked the center. The center resisted. Resistance to the mother country in English America was organized by the most comprehensive political institution, the assembly. The Continental Congress was its creation. The problem of authority was resolved before the revolution commenced. In Spanish America, the institutional base of the revolt was the cabildo, the least comprehensive political unit. The problem of authority, the issue of who should govern and to whose benefit, was at the heart of the rebellion. The independence movement in Spanish America faced a situation fundamentally more complex than the difficulties experienced by revolutionary leaders in English America. The assembly could levy taxes, raise armies, and issue currency. It was an established institution that held together the dominant interests of colonial society. The revolution in English America sustained and defended a basic, operating, legitimate institutional framework. The ideology of the revolution came from the assembly. -- Pg. 235.
