Book The American Peace Movement and Social Reform 1889 1918

Download or read book The American Peace Movement and Social Reform 1889 1918 written by C. Roland Marchand and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the peace movement in the United States was one of dramatic change: in the mid-IKWs it consisted of a few provincial societies; by 1912 it had become eminently respectable and listed among its members an impressive number of the nation's leaders; by 1918 it was once again weak and remote from those who formulated national policy. Along with these fluctuations went equally substantial changes of leadership and purpose that, as C. Roland Marchand emphasizes, reflected the motives of the various reform groups that successively joined and dominated the movement. Most of those who joined were not devoted solely to the cause of world peace, but saw in the programs of the movement a chance for the fulfillment of their own mare immediately relevant goals. Consequently the story of the peace movement reflects the concerns of such groups as the international lawyers who wanted a world court of arbitration as an alternative to war, the business leaders who believed that international economic stability would be endangered by war, and the labor unions who felt that the working class suffered most in war. Book The Peace Movement of America Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Peace Movement of America Classic Reprint written by Julius Moritzen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Peace Movement of America All great movements that mean to benefit the race require disinterested leadership and popular support. The peace movement is no exception. In the past, men and women with noble purpose have worked inspiringly to the end that warfare may be abolished. In America in the United States, in Canada, and the Latin-American republics - there never was a time when international harmony appeared to signify more to the welfare of the world than it does to-day. In Europe and in the Far East, the peace movement is advancing more slowly, yet no less irresistibly than in the western hemisphere. A book dealing with the peace movement in America must of necessity be somewhat fragmentary. Where so many swiftly changing factors enter into the international scheme for amity, not too much can be expected from the marshalling of data considerable of which is so recent as to preclude it from being historic. At the same time, the very freshness of the American peace movement, its spontaneity - with ranks augmented and strengthened leadership - would seem to call for consideration.
