Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anglican Reformation, or the Church of England but Half Reformed The Erastian thraldom to which the Church of England has been reduced, cannot but be galling to all her rightly constituted clergy, and we so deeply sympathize with them, that we put the most favourable construction upon all their apologies for themselves. We cannot, however, lend the same indulgence to their attempts to prove that theirs is the best possible constitution, any more than we could listen with any patience to a West Indian slave, who should shake his fetters in our face as an evidence ofthe superior advan tages of slavery. Even this, however, we might pass with a sigh for the degradation to which slavery reduces its vic tims, but we cannot extend the same tolerance to their libels upon other Churches for having had the manliness of spirit to assert their proper liberty, and the regard to the honour of Jesus to vindicate his sovereign exclusive supremacy in his own Church. And yet a member of the Church of England can never think of defending his own Church, but he must at the same time attack the Churches of others, and especially the Church of Just notice the self complacent absurdity of the following passage from the last page of the work noticed in the preceding note, by the pre sent bishop of Sodor and Man Compare, says Dr. Short, addressing men who are too ignorant to be capable of insti tuting a comparison, or too prejudiced to be able to pass an impartial judgment, compare what took place in Scotland with what took place in England, at the period ofthe Refor mation and after showing some of those things which did take place in England, and stating that the admirer of our Episcopal Church - our apostolic establishment must thank the timid, if not the time-serving and Erastian Cranmer, that the Church of England was reformed precisely as she was, and that it did not happen there as it did happen among us - we have Dr. Short's word for it that the force ofthe multitude in Scotland (had) thrown down what the Episcopalians will consider as almost the Church itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformers of the Anglican Church, and Mr. Macaulay's History of England God raised up Apostles and prophets, and gave them power extra ordinary, as the gift of tongues, the gift of healing, the gift of government, &c., in place whereof, He hath given now bishops, archbishops, &c. Bishop Jewel was also one of the disputants on the Protestant side at a disputation in 1559, between the Papists and Protestants at Westminster, when the latter maintained against the former, who were anxious to lower the episcopal in favour of the papal dignity, that the Apostles' authority is derived upon after ages, and conveyed to the bishops, their successors. The eminent names of Scory, Grindal, Cox, Aylmer, Guest, Jewel, and Horn, may be mentioned as the Protestant disputants who maintained the above proposition. (see Note at the end.) Download or read book English Church and the Reformation Classic Reprint written by Charles Sydney Carter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Church and the Reformation This movement had been very greatly accelerated by the mortal struggle with feudalism which had occupied such a large part of the fifteenth century. In France and England the dis integrating force of an increasingly powerful semi-independent feudal aristocracy had succumbed to a new and more powerful monarchy personifying national unity and consolidation. The practical anarchy entailed by a disastrous period of civil war led Englishmen to welcome the prospect Of settled order and peace under the absolute rule of a new monarchy. Thus the termina tion of the Wars of the Roses with the battle of Bosworth Field enabled the Tudors to build up a strong and despotic government on the ruins of the old feudal nobility. Download or read book The History of the Reformation of the Church of England Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Gilbert Burnet and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 2 The favourable reception which the former part of this work had, together with the new materials that were sent me from noble and worthy hands, have encouraged me to prosecute it, and to carry down the History of the Reformation of this Church till it was brought to a complete settlement in the beginning of queen Elizabeth's reign; which I now offer to the world. The great zeal of this ago for what was done in that, about religion, has made the History of it to be received and read with more than ordinary attention and care: and many have expressed their satisfaction in what was formerly published, by contributing several papers of great consequence to what remained. And since I found no part of the first volume was more universally acceptable, than that wherein I was only a transcriber; I mean the Collection of Records and authentic Papers, which I had set down in confirmation of the more remarkable and doubtful parts of the History; I continue the same method now. I shall repeat nothing here that was in my former preface; but refer the reader to such things as concern this History in general, and my encouragement in the undertaking and prosecution of it, to what is there premised to the whole work: and therefore I shall now enlarge on such things as do more particularly relate to this volume. The papers, that were conveyed to me from several hands, are referred to, as the occasion to mention them occurs in the History, with such acknowledgments as I thought best became this way of writing, though far short of the merits of those who furnished me with them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 1 of 2 The Lord Herbert judged it unworthy of him to tri e as others had done, and therefore made a more narrow search into records and original papers than all that had gone before him and with great fidelity and industry has given us the History of King Henry the Eighth. But in the transactions that concern religion, he dwells not so long as the matter required, leaving those to men of another profession, and judging it perhaps not so proper for one of his condition to pursue a full and accurate deduction of those matters.
