He noticed a cabin clothesline from which were hanging three magnificent quilts unlike any he had ever seen. They were of strong, bold colors in original, op-art patterns—the same art style then fashionable in New York City and other cultural centers. An idea was born and within weeks took on life, in the form of the Freedom Quilting Bee, a handcraft cooperative of black women artisans who would become acclaimed throughout the nation.

Women's work in the region included outdoor agricultural labour, housekeeping, childbirth, mortuary services, food preparation, caring for the sick, and textile production. Ordinary Saints explores how religious belief shaped the meaning of this work, and how women lived their Christian faith through the work they did. In lived religious practices at home, in church-based voluntary associations, and in the wider community, the Anglican women of Conception Bay constructed a female theological culture characterized by mutuality, negotiation of gender roles, and resistance to male authority, combining feminist consciousness with Christian commitment. Bonnie Morgan brings together evidence from oral interviews, denominational publications, census data, minute books of the Church of England Women's Association, headstone epitaphs, and household art and objects to demonstrate the profound ties between labour and faithfulness: for these rural women, work not only expressed but also shaped belief. She has left her family in the Isles of Scilly, off the coast of Southern England, in 1702 to work for the Rally Christian family as a maid. While there, she meets her would-be husband, Carlton Christian. They marry in 1704 and sail to New England, where Carlton secures a teaching position at the Deerfield Fort. They are attacked in the historical Deerfield Massacre. Carlton is killed, and Rebekkah is taken prisoner and marched to Canada. The second journal is from Margaret Porter in Boston, Massachussetts. She marries the son of the Merriweather Plantation owner in Georgia, where she will live. The Civil War begins, and her husband joins and is killed. She is left to survive with a family. Marie is the third strong woman who has kept the journal, which was given by her mother, Marigold, and she is the great-granddaughter of Rebekkah. Her family migrates from Canada and settles in Savannah, Georgia, where she marries and has two children. This family eventually migrates to Merriweather Plantation. After the Civil War, a great-great-great-grandson of Carlton’s shows up at Merriweather Plantation. He and his father are from an illegitimate child that Carlton sired and knew nothing about before he married Rebekkah. This has combined two families as this young Carlton will marry Rebekkah, the great-great-granddaughter of Rebekkah, thus producing a family like a paper quilt. This a book of history, biography, poetry, incest and murder, recipes, menus, and interior design covering three hundred years.

Book excerpt: Anglicanism is one of the largest and most widely dispersed of all religious traditions. How it reached this status is replete with irony and with conflict. The origins of Anglicanism lie in the Church of England, still its largest branch and arguably its defining center. But the majority of Anglicans now reside in sub-Saharan Africa and do not speak English as their primary language. Given Anglicanism’s roots, and its integration into British colonialism, the expansion of this branch of Christianity seems puzzling. Moreover, intramural Anglican conflict, from the end of colonialism onward, seemingly has torn the fabric of Anglican life. It seems problematic that this tradition, and the church bodies that represent it, will remain intact. By looking at the Church through the lens of the biblical theme of promise, this book seeks to offer neither lament for a tattered tradition nor facile hope for an expanding one. It considers the key phases of Anglican history, each defined by clear intentions, from securing English national life, to mission, to finding contextual roots in various locales. Whilst not denying that the ongoing contestation about the proper shape of Anglican faith and practice has become central, the book highlights the emergence of fresh consensus among Anglicans, centered on grassroots initiative and innovation, creating informal patterns of collaboration that can transcend context and overlook divergence.
