Book Before Einstein

Download or read book Before Einstein written by Elizabeth L. Throesch and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2017-01-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Before Einstein’ brings together previous scholarship in the field of nineteenth-century literature and science and greatly expands upon it, offering the first book-length study of not only the scientific and cultural context of the spatial fourth dimension, but also the literary value of four-dimensional theory. In addition to providing close critical analysis of Charles Howard Hinton’s Scientific Romances (1884–1896), ‘Before Einstein’ examines the work of H. G. Wells, Henry James and William James through the lens of four-dimensional theory. The primary value of Hinton’s work has always been its literary and philosophical content and influence, rather than its scientific authority. It is certain that significant late nineteenth-century writers and thinkers such as H. G. Wells, William James, Olive Schreiner, Karl Pearson and W. E. B. Du Bois read Hinton. Others, including Henry James, Joseph Conrad and Ford Madox Ford, were familiar with his ideas. Hinton’s fourth dimension appealed to scientists, spiritualists and artists, and – particularly at the end of the nineteenth century – the interests of these different groups often overlapped. Truly interdisciplinary in scope, ‘Before Einstein’ breaks new ground by offering an extensive analysis of four-dimensional theory's place in the shared history of Modernism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultimate guide to the man behind the mask . . . and the mythology behind the man. “Criminals are a superstitious, cowardly lot. So my disguise must be able to strike terror into their hearts. I must be a creature of the night, black, terrible. . . . I shall become a bat!” So declared millionaire industrialist Bruce Wayne, orphaned as a boy by a murderous thug and driven as a man to battle the scourge of crime by becoming Batman. Batman swooped into popular culture in 1939–and for nearly seventy years has thrilled audiences in countless comics, live-action and animated television programs, and seven feature films. Book excerpt: "Very few of the titles, whether fiction or non, take a serious analytical look at the "Bible" as a biblical scholar or theologian would. This is where "God's Inferno" differs from the majority. It utilizes logical, rational, reasoning to analyze what that Bible actually says, not what most have been lead to believe. It seriously attacks the present Christian faith as their tenants and doctrines are based on a very faulty interpretation of what the Bible actually says. It maintains, and proves, the god of the Old Testament is not the 'Supreme God', but merely what the Jewish people of Israel pictured their god to be. Naturally, if he is not the Supreme God, then Jesus is not the Son of that Supreme God but may have been the son of that hateful, murderous, vengeful god of the Old Testament. From the founding of Christianity, it traces its impact through the first 1500-1600 years of the Catholic Church, the keepers of the faith during that time. It documents the Crusades, the Inquisitions and the Reformation as well as the many married priests, Popes who fathered children, and under aged leading fathers of the Church. Finally, it attempts to motivate the indifferent Christian to utilize his God given mind to seriously think about what they actually believe and to conduct their lives according to that belief."
