  • Pages : 378 pages

Download or read book The Andes written by Axel Borsdorf and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-12 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Andes are attracting global interest again: they hold valuable mineral resources, tourists appreciate their great natural beauty and the diversity of indigenous cultures, climbers scale rock and ice faces, while many others are intrigued by regional political developments, such as the Bolivarian revolution in Venezuela or the almost unfettered hegemony of the neoliberal economic model in Chile. This volume is the first attempt for decades to present a complete overview of the longest mountain chain on the planet – a region of remarkable climatic, floristic and geologic diversity, where advanced civilization developed well before the arrival of the Spanish. Today the Andes continue to be characterized by their ethnic, demographic, cultural and economic diversity, as well as by the disparity of local socioeconomic groups. The Andean countries pursue a wide range of approaches to tackle the challenges of making the best use of their natural and cultural potential without damaging their ecological basis, as well as to overcome economic disparity and foster social cohesion. This book provides insights into this unique region and its most pressing issues, complemented by a wealth of pictures and comprehensive diagrams, which, in sum, help to better understand these fascinating mountains.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Using case studies from four field sites in the Peruvian highlands where the author has conducted long-term fieldwork, Andean Meltdown offers an ethnographic account of how Andean people make sense of and adapt to climate change. Karsten Paerregaard investigates how climate change prompts them to not only reorganize their daily activities, adjust their ritual traditions, and reshuffle their worldview, but also take action to protect and gain control over their water resources, the environment, and ultimately their lives. Examining the multiple ways climate change intersects with environmental, social, and political change in Peru, Paerregaard also explores how the state and other external actors influence Andean people's climate experience and perception and how new practices and imaginations emerge from rapid environmental change. The book's claim is that climate change and its impact on Andean society must be investigated within the broader context of current social, political, and cultural change in Peru"--

Book Andean Structural Styles

Download or read book Andean Structural Styles written by Gonzalo Zamora and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andean Structural Styles: A Seismic Atlas is a comprehensive reference illustrating the variability in structural styles and hydrocarbon traps that exist in the Andean chain. The Andean chain, stretching over more than 5,000 km (3,000 mi) from Venezuela to Argentina, contains a large number of sedimentary basins which have developed in a wide range of tectonic settings. Some of these basins are highly mature, with hydrocarbon production from Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic sedimentary sequences, while others are still underexplored. Andean Structural Styles: A Seismic Atlas covers topics including fold types, thrust faults, triangle zones, inversion structures, synorogenic deposits, and growth stratal geometries. These topics are illustrated by thirty-two seismic examples interpreted and uninterpreted, covering most of the Andean basins, and five chapters reviewing the structural styles of the Andes, the complexity of processing seismic in these settings, how analogue models help in the interpretation, and several outcrop analogues. This reference is invaluable to both hydrocarbon exploration of the Andes and researchers and students in the fields of exploration geology and structural geology. Also, those teaching structural geology and seismic interpretation will find a valuable resource with lots of uninterpreted seismic examples that can be used in their lectures. Includes a vast collection of high-quality, color images Features case studies covering the entirety of the Andes Mountain chain Presents high-quality seismic data that was previously only available to oil companies

Book Glacier Volume Changes in the Tropical Andes

Download or read book Glacier Volume Changes in the Tropical Andes written by Kyung In Huh and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (2) The change in volume and surface area of six glaciers in the study area between 1962 and 2008. The loss of glacier surface areas ranges from 30.79% to 72.62%, which corresponds to the changes in glacier volume of 0.019 km3 to 0.150 km3 depending on the specific glacier under investigation. Based on the 13 different epochs of calculated changes in volume and surface area from DEMs, I assess the first version of an refined volume and surface area (V-S) scaling and show that there is about 36% more volume loss from these individual tropical glaciers than from other glaciers at mid and high latitudes. The uncertainty of the scaling analysis from the error propagation suggests that the magnitude of the error is approximately 25% of the computed volume from the V-S scaling of Cordillera Blanca. 3) The LIA maximum palaeoglaciers (mid 19th century) are reconstructed using a cellular automata model with glacier parameters and remote sensing DEMs and the outcome of the simulation is applied for the V-S scaling. The model simulation shows a good agreement with observed geomorphic data and V-S scaling of the cellular automata output is always within the 25% error range in the reconstruction simulation. The result suggests that the volume estimation should work for glaciers smaller than 8km2. Also, I employ a hydrologic balance model to reconstruct long-term glacier significance to stream flow from the reconstructed LIA glaciers. The hydrographs from the water balance model show that multiple peaks of both mean yearly and dry season discharge that have never been documented previous research of the same mountain range.

Book Low Latitude Andean Glaciers Climate Drivers of Past Present and Future Changes

Download or read book Low Latitude Andean Glaciers Climate Drivers of Past Present and Future Changes written by Andrew Grady Oros Malone and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical Andean glaciers are an essential component of the alpine Earth system providing vital water resources for life in their vicinity. Glaciers are also archives of past climate change and barometers of present climate change, and tropical glaciers can provide a much needed additional low-latitude terrestrial paleoclimate proxy. Despite their societal and scientific importance, the study of tropical glaciers is nascent. This dissertation provides new perspectives on the climate components most important for tropical glacier change, illustrates that records of past tropical glacier changes can be used as a quantitive paleoclimate proxy, and provides a framework for a more rigorous interpretation of tropical glacier advances and retreats as a climate proxy.
