Book excerpt: Recite your poem to your aunt. I threw myself to the ground. Where were you in the night? In a school among the pines. What was the meaning of the dream? Organs, hormones, toxins, lesions: what is a body? In 3 Summers, Lisa Robertson takes up her earlier concerns with form and literary precedent, and turns toward the timeliness of embodiment. What is form's time? Here the form of life called a poem speaks with the body's mortality, its thickness, its play. The 10 poem-sequences in 3 Summers inflect a history of textual voices — Lucretius, Marx, Aby Warburg, Deleuze, the Sogdian Sutras — in a lyricism that insists on analysis and revolt, as well as the pleasures of description. The poet explores the mysterious oddness of the body, its languor and persistence, to test how it shapes the materiality of thinking, which includes rivers and forests. But in these poems' landscapes, the time of nature is inherently political. Now only time is wild, and only time — embodied here in Lisa Robertson’s forceful cadences — can tell. "Robertson proves hard to explain but easy to enjoy. . . . Dauntlessly and resourcefully intellectual, Robertson can also be playful or blunt. . . . She wields language expertly, even beautifully."—The New York Times "Robertson makes intellect seductive; only her poetry could turn swooning into a critical gesture."— The Village Voice Lisa Robertson's books include Cinema of the Present, Debbie: An Epic, The Men, The Weather, R's Boat and Occasional Works and Seven Walks from the Office for Soft Architecture. Lisa Robertson's Magenta Soul Whip was named one of The New York Times' 100 Notable Books. She lives in France.

Download or read book Kim Kardashian s Marriage written by Sam Riviere and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 72 poems in Kim Kardashian's Marriage mark out equally sharpened lines of public and private engagement. Kim Kardashian's 2011 marriage lasted for 72 days, and was seen by some as illustrative of celebrity life as a performance, as spectacle. Whatever the truth of this (and Kardashian's own statements refute it), Sam Riviere has used the furor as a point of ignition, deploying terms from Kardashian's make-up regimen to explore surfaces and self-consciousness, presentation and obfuscation. His pursuit is toward a form of zero-privacy akin, perhaps, to Kardashian's own life, that eschews a dependence upon confessional modes of writing to explore what kind of meaning lies in impersonal methods of creation. The poems have been produced by harvesting and manipulating the results of search engines to create a poetry of part-collage, part-improvisation. The effect is as refractive as it is reflective, and disturbs the slant on biography through a bricolage of recycled and cross-referenced language, until we are left with a pixellation of the first person.
Download or read book Nilling written by Lisa Robertson and published by Department of Critical Thought. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary Nonfiction. NILLING: PROSE is a sequence of five loosely linked prose essays about noise, pornography, the codex, melancholy, Lucretius, folds, cities and related aporias: in short, these are essays on reading. I have tried to make a sketch or a model in several dimensions of the potency of Arendt's idea of invisibility, the necessary inconspicuousness of thinking and reading, and the ambivalently joyous and knotted agency to be found there. Just beneath the surface of the phonemes, a gendered name rhythmically explodes into a founding variousness. And then the strictures of the text assert again themselves. I want to claim for this inconspicuousness a transformational agency that runs counter to the teleology of readerly intention. Syllables might call to gods who do and don't exist. That is, they appear in the text's absences and densities as a motile graphic and phonemic force that abnegates its own necessity. Overwhelmingly in my submission to reading's supple snare, I feel love.

Download or read book The Ancient Mariner Classic Reprint written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ancient Mariner This edition of The Ancient Mariner aims to include the information and critical comment necessary to an intelligent appreciation of the poem. As a help to that end, it has been thought desirable to print the original version (1798), since the differences between that and the final version afford an especially valuable opportunity for training in discrimination and taste. The interest which attaches to the personal history of Coleridge has, unfortunately, little in common with the interest which attaches to The Ancient Mariner. It has, therefore, seemed proper to include in this volume only a short biographical sketch. Students who may be impelled by a laudable curiosity to seek a more detailed knowledge of the poet's life are referred to the biographies by Hall Caine, Dr. Alois Brandl (translated into English by Lady Eastlake), and J. Dykes Campbell. Coleridge's own Biographia Literaria, in spite of its fragmentary character, is essential to a knowledge of his intellectual and moral development. Methods of teaching The Ancient Mariner must differ widely with different teachers and pupils. All efforts, however, should be subordinated to the: aim of helping students to read with their imaginations - to see what Coleridge describes. Modern editions use a revised version printed in 1817 that featured a gloss. Along with other poems in Lyrical Ballads, it was a signal shift to modern poetry and the beginning of British Romantic literature.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rime of the Ancient Mariner As The Ancient Mariner, because of the difficulties it presents, may be taken up to advantage toward the end of the pupil's preparation of the English reading required for admission to college, this edition of the poem is designed especially for the use of more advanced students. Assuming on the part of the pupil some knowledge of many of the texts assigned, the Introduction is intended, not only o prepare the student to understand the poem itself, but also to point the way to a comprehensive study of literature in its larger significance; and it attempts, accordingly, by the use of the historical method, to set The Ancient Mariner in its right relations with reference both to Coleridge and to its place in English literature. By thus presenting the poem in its wider bearings, the book aims to suggest entertain fundamental principles of literary investigation, and by bringing the student to a true conception of what literature is, to stimulate an interest in further study. The text here printed is reproduced without change from the edition of Coleridge's Poetical and Dramatic Works published in 1829. This reissue of the definitive edition of 1838 has been chosen as the standard for the text, as it was the last to receive Coleridge's personal supervision. Book excerpt: The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner: In Seven Parts This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coleridge's Ancient Mariner ON the list of entrance requirements in English liter ature, as recently adopted by the Association of New England Colleges, stands Coleridge's Ancient Mariner. The selection is a happy one, for the reason that the poem, exquisite in melody and imagery, and abounding in nature-pictures equally remarkable for Wide range and delicate accuracy, nevertheless produces at first so vivid an impression of spectral horror as to blind the casual reader to its rare poetic grace and charm. But as the poem is dwelt upon in the class-room, the stu dent being brought to realize the marvellous succession of moonlight, ocean scenes, then the agonies of that dis ordered soul and the frightfulness of the images re ected from its guilty consciousness will but serve to throw into fairer contrast the blessedness of the Spirit restored to the life of love, and the peaceful beauty of the uni verse as beheld by eyes purged from selfishness and sin.
