Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compendium of Christian Antiquities: Being a Brief View of the Orders, Rites, Laws and Customs of the Ancient Church in the Early Ages It may be proper to say a few words respecting the particular design and character of the following work, It was suggested to the writer, by some friends whose eminent station in the Church entitled their judgment to great respect, that such a book as this would fill a place not occupied, and supply a want that was ex tensively felt. Of the great work of Bingham - the Orz'gz'nes Ecclesz'asticae - there is no American edition. Besides, it is so voluminous, as not to fall within the means or leisure of a large number of general readers, and perhaps of theological students and clergymen. It was thought it might be doing an acceptable ser vice to such to give them the substance of that work within the compass of a moderate volume. Book Book of Common Order

Download or read book Book of Common Order written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Book of Common Order: For Use in Church Services and Offices To promote the orderly, reverent, and edifying conduct of Public Worship and other Services of the Church, in keeping with historical standards, is the ruling purpose of the present book. A Common Order in the government of the Church is recognized in every Christian communion; and a Common Order in regular Church Worship and Offices, without rigid uniformity, is correspondingly desirable, in so far as it is practicable. The freedom of the Spirit in fresh spontaneous expressions of devotion must ever be welcomed and conserved. The Forms of Service here following are not intended to restrict the exercise of such freedom. They are meant to be suggestive, to supply in specimens a standard and guide for Ministers, being at the same time corrective of irregular or extravagant effusions and of individual aberrations in the conduct of Church ordinances. This book has been prepared by the Public Worship Committee appointed by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, arid has received the 'general approval' of the Assembly 'for voluntary use'. Orders for Church Services and Offices may follow either of two different types. One of these is mainly based upon older historical models and materials, hallowed by ancient or continuous use. The other is generally cast in more modern terms of expression, and makes use of more recent compositions, which are at the same time fittingly devotional and dignified. In keeping with this distinction, alternative Services for Public Worship and for several Offices are provided in the present volume. The one or the other may be used as found suitable in different congregations and upon different occasions. We have made a liberal draft upon prayers which are part of the common inheritance of the Christian Church, or which have established their value through widespread use. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book Early Church Classics

Download or read book Early Church Classics written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Church Classics: The Apostolical Constitutions The Greek text is known to us to-day in four MSS. The earliest of these, dated A.D. IIII, is preserved at S. Petersburg. (S. Pet. Greek MSS. 254.) The next in age is a Vienna MS. of the fourteenth century. (Vienna, Gk. Hist. MSS. 56.) The two remaining MSS. are both of the sixteenth century, and are preserved at Vienna and Paris. (Vienna, Gk. Hist. MSS. 57, and Paris, fonds Grec. 961. - Reg. 2874, e Colb. 4491.) From the date of its rediscovery the work has been the subject of considerable controversy. It bears the name of Clement of Rome, and was regarded by Turrianus and Bovius as being his genuine work. This high esteem was surpassed by Whiston (Primitive Christianity. London, 1711), who expressed the opinion that it contained the substance of Our Lords revelation during the forty days which intervened between His resurrection and ascension, and, consequently, was rather more important than the New Testament itself. These views, however, did not meet with universal approval. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Challenge: The Church and the New World Order Patriotic Organizations, Conscription Leagues, and Preparedness Parades, then it might as well confess its impotency to be the leader of the world out of chaos into order. For none of these organizations are offering anything except the principles on which the old order rested, toppling always, insecure, and at last falling. It is this truth I wish to recall to the Churches. But mostly I wish to reassure those prophetic souls who have been writing me from all over our great land - and there are many, young, ardent, full of faith - that this is the great day of the Church if it but go forth with its Lord in a great venture far beyond the power of those who are bound by habit of thought and tradition, to go. To them belongs yesterday and today in Europe - to-morrow belongs to us. All this material has been used in editorial form in The Christian Work during the past year. This accounts for some repetition and some informality of expression not generally expected in a book. But it seemed best not to re-write them, and print them practically unchanged. F L. Download or read book Early Church History to A D 313 Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Henry Melvill Gwatkin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Church History to A. D. 313, Vol. 1 of 2 IN the present work the writer's aim is to trace the growth of Christianity in its connexion with the general history of the time, indicating the lines of thought, and noting the forces that made for change, but without any attempt to give an ex haustive account. For this reason the subjects are taken in a roughly chronological order and since the history concerns the general reader as well as the student of Theology, the original languages are almost entirely excluded from the text, and only a few books are named after each chapter for further study. In a word, the work is a narrative, not a repertory of facts and writers on the facts like von Schubert's excellent Kirchengeschichte. Download or read book The Validity of the Holy Orders of the Church of England written by Frederick George Lee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Validity of the Holy Orders of the Church of England: Maintained and Vindicated, Both Theologically and Historically With Foot-Notes, Tables of Consecrations, and Appendices It is melancholy to observe how those whose unenviable interest it is to cast doubt on the Validity of our Ordinations do but re-produce arguments which have been again and again refuted at previous periods of our ecclesiastical history. No long time after the changes of the sixteenth century it seems to have been admitted by independent English writers, as it certainly was by competent critics abroad, that Mason's masterly vindication of our position was perfectly conclusive. For, to the more far-sighted Roman Catholics, it appeared highly impolitic, as well as dangerous, to make use of weapons which might on other occasions with deadly effect be turned against those who used them.
