Book The Anatomy of Truth Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Anatomy of Truth Classic Reprint written by F. Hugh Capron and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anatomy of Truth The danger with which Religion is threatened to-day is of a different kind from that which found its expression in the intel lectual menaces which characterised the nineteenth century. It is now tacitly admitted on all sides that Science, having done her worst, has failed to disturb the sublime equanimity of her supposed antagonist but real ally. It is not that Science has failed to establish the truths upon which her nineteenth century attacks upon Religion were based. On the contrary, most of the scientific discoveries which furnished the materials for the hostile criticisms of Huxley and of Haeckel rest at the present time on a basis of even greater certainty than that which attached to them in those troublous days when they were first thrown, like nihilistic bombs, into the startled camp of Theology. No one to-day seriously questions, except in so far as Science herself has modified or corrected them, the truth of any of those scientific discoveries which at the time seemed, to theologians and sceptics alike, to carry theo logical annihilation before them. And yet no one, with whose opinion we need concern ourselves, seriously believes to-day that Religion stands in any danger from either the researches of Science or the musings of Philosophy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anatomy of the Human Body That the liberal course adopted by these gentlemen might create some feeling among the members of the trade, is not to be wondered at. We can understand the feelings of Demetrius, the Silversmith, who made silver shrines for Diana, which brought no small gain to the craftsmen but we confess we could hardly have believed that any of the medical censors of the country, men of science, could have expressed any other feeling but that of unmixed satisfaction; for the Messrs. Harper have diminished nearly 100 per cent. The price of med ical books. The remarkable course, however, followed by the medical journals of Philadelphia, in reference to the publications of the Messrs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Anatomy: By American Authors The authors have unceasingly endeavored to facilitate the work Of both student and teacher. Both are tested in every examination, and particularly in those con ducted by State Licensing Boards. Accordingly, from the vast accumulations of anatomical science those portions have been selected which are likely to be of actual service to the student in his subsequent study, and to the practitioner in his clinical work. Emphasis has been laid upon the most important facts, Obscurities have been clarified, the greatest amount of help has been given in the parts which are most difficult to learn, and everything has been illustrated by all available methods. In short no effort has been Spared to promote facility of acquisition and permanence of the knowledge gained. The arrangement of the book is along familiar lines, the ordinary divisions of systematic anatomy having been followed in the main. Each author has set forth his subject in such manner as experience has shown him to be profitable. Great relative stress has been laid upon visceral structure, without neglect of other branches; surface anatomy has received attention more in proportion to its use fulness than is usual, and the pictorial and diagrammatic illustrations (thanks to the remarkable liberality of the publishers) are phenomenally abundant and of striking artistic excellence. Wherever practicable the names of the parts have been engraved directly upon them, a method which has the great advantage Of conveying at a glance their shape, position, extent and relations. Concessions to the truth Of their observations poured in upon them from all quarters slowly, indeed, but with a steady and increasing progress. France has honored Gall, as she should, with that generous regret she always bestows upon the remains of those who have honored her.
