Book excerpt: In recent years the x-ray fluorescence technique has become increasingly important in modern analysis and production control; it can be classified as a spectroscopical method for the determination of the elemental com position. Many articles treat this method; however, there exists no modern textbook suitable for the beginner as well as the practician and theoretician. In this monograph the author intends to fill this need to present the prin ciples of x-ray fluorescence analysis and to develop a theoretical under standing of the technique. Both principles and theory w.ill be treated exten sively, for they are the basis for successful practical application of the method. X-ray fluorescence, on the other hand, is often carried out exclusively because of its practical usefulness. For this reason theoretical investigations are used exclusively as a basis for practical work and the multitude of applications, which constitute the value of the x-ray fluores cence method, will be explained on the basis of simple theory. The idea to write this monograph originated and developed when efforts to train coworkers required a more complete treatise. I would like to thank the elBA Aktiengesellschaft in Basel, where this work originated, for generous support and permission to publish the book. The head of the Physics Department, Dr. E. Book excerpt: A rapid x-ray fluorescence (XRF) method for the quantitative analysis of uranium in ore and process samples is demonstrated. The method requires no uranium ore standards and provides a relative precision of +-2.5 percent. Particle-size and self-absorption effects are evaluated along with current methods of excitation and detection for M, L, and K series uranium x-rays. Sensitivities and detection limits are comparable using either energy dispersive or wavelength dispersive analysis of uranium L x-rays, and wavelength dispersive analysis of uranium M x-rays for both thick and thin samples. The XRF methods are more sensitive than the analysis of uranium by 252Cf neutron-induced .gamma.-ray analysis or by direct photon analysis of uranium daughters.

Book excerpt: The energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence analysis (XRFA) technique has been implemented at several spent nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities for nondestructive measurements of uranium and/or plutonium concentrations in process streams and product storage tanks. An important factor in these quantitative measurements is the absorption of the fluoresced x-rays by the solution matrix, which must be taken into account to accurately quantify the U or Pu concentrations. We describe a new, accurate method using a dual transmission source of Gd-153 and Co-57 to correct for matrix effects. Results of measurements on uranium and plutonium solution standards show the methodology to be better than 0.5%, which includes statistical precision, over the concentration range from 1 to 250 g/l. 5 refs., 4 figs., 3 tabs.

The method has been demonstrated with synthetic U samples in the limited concentration range of 1g/l to 15g/l, and provides the advantages of simplicity, involving no mechanical parts which would normally be found in an external excitation source. Total uranium is determined by counting L x-rays fluoresced by a microCurie level spike of Cd-109 added directly to the sample and without shielding the excitation source from the detector. A method for correction of sample self-absorption is included in the analysis.

Book excerpt: A method has been developed for gravimetrically preparing uranium nitrate standards with an estimated mean error of 0.1% (1 sigma) and a maximum error of 0.2% (1 sigma) for the total uranium weight. Two source materials, depleted uranium dioxide powder and NBS Standard Reference Material 960 uranium metal, were used to prepare stock solutions. The NBS metal proved to be superior because of the small but inherent uncertainty in the stoichiometry of the uranium oxide. These solutions were used to prepare standards in a freeze-dried configuration suitable for x-ray fluorescence analysis. Both gravimetric and freeze-drying techniques are presented. Volumetric preparation was found to be unsatisfactory for 0.1% precision for the sample size of interest. One of the primary considerations in preparing uranium standards for x-ray fluorescence analysis is the development of a technique for dispensing a 50-.mu.l aliquot of a standard solution with a precision of 0.1% and an accuracy of 0.1%. The method developed corrects for variation in aliquoting and for evaporation loss during weighing. Two sets, each containing 50 standards have been produced. One set has been retained by LLL and one set retained by the Savannah River project (SRP).

After uranium is extracted from uranium ore, only low energy gamma-rays emitted from 235U may be detected if the detector is placed in close contact to the specimen. In this research, identification and characterization of uranium bearing materials is experimentally investigated using direct measurement of gamma-rays from 235U in combination with the x-ray fluorescence (XRF) technique. Measurement of gamma-rays can be conducted by using high purity germanium (HPGe) detector or cadmium telluride (CdTe) detector while a 57Co radioisotope-excited XRF spectrometer using CdTe detector is used for elemental analysis. The proposed technique was tested with various uranium bearing specimens containing natural, depleted and enriched uranium in both metallic and powder forms. The results indicated that combination of the two techniques can be used to identify and to characterize suspicious nuclear materials not only uranium bearing materials but also Plutonium (Pu) and Thorium (Th).
