Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Amphioxus and Its Development Dr. Hatschek's investigations respecting the Amphioxus has hitherto not been accessible to that portion of the scientific world which does not read German. The following Translation has been undertaken in response to a generally expressed wish that this want should be remedied. My best thanks for valuable assistance are due to Dr. D'Amman, of Kew, and Professor Potter, of the College of Science in the University of Durham. The latter kindly undertook to revise the scientific terminology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Amphioxus and the Ancestry, of the Vertebrates This volume originated in a course of University lec tures prepared at my suggestion by the author. It seemed important that he should bring within the reach of students and of specialists among other groups, his own extensive observations upon Amphioxus and other remote ancestors of the Vertebrates, as well as the general litera ture upon this group. While our detailed knowledge of the structure and habits of these animals has been rapidly increasing in recent years, it is still in the main very widely scattered in monographs and special papers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Structure of the Pharyngeal Bars of Amphioxus A second difference between the rods is that the skeletal vessel is inside the coelom in the tongue bar, but outside it in the primary bar over the greater part of its extent, though, in the lower part of the latter bar, it is intra-coelomic, as in the tongue bar (fig. 30, a). I have sometimes seen a small cavity outside the rod in the tongue bar, but I have not been able to satisfy myself as to its nature; it may be merely artifact. Excerpt: ...in the details of its organisation, essentially resembles the embryos of the higher types. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS. We will now pass on to give a general interpretation of some of the principal phenomena which are presented to us in the development of Amphioxus. Larval Asymmetry. By far the most prominent feature of the fully formed larva is its astounding asymmetry, and it is extremely important, from a morphological point of view, to form a just conception of it. The phenomenon of asymmetry manifests itself in the larva of Amphioxus under several very different aspects, and is occasioned by various causes. For convenience we may classify the forms of asymmetry which we have to consider under three main divisions, according to the type of organs involved. 1. Median Asymmetry.--This relates to such structures as lie normally in the middle line, whether dorsal or ventral, but which have been mechanically or correlatively displaced from their primitive position by the differential growth of neighbouring parts. Such are the olfactory pit and neuropore, the anus, the mouth, and the endostyle. All these are essentially and primordially median and unpaired structures. We have already dealt with the neuropore and anus, while the mouth and endostyle will be considered below. 2. Bilateral Asymmetry.--This refers to the alternation of paired structures, such as myotomes, spinal nerves, gillslits, and gonads, which we have already noted in the adult organisation. Primarily the organ of one side lies opposite to its antimere of the other side. By a secondary displacement it comes to alternate with it. 3. Unilateral Asymmetry.--Next to the asymmetrical mouth, this is perhaps the most striking form of asymmetry which the larva of Amphioxus exhibits. It...

It is alike useful in a text-book of human embryology, and in one of invertebrate zoology. (willey, Amphioxus, etc., p. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vertebrate Embryology: A d104-Book for Students and Practitioners This latter practice is a most unfortunate one, and has been the cause of much confusion. The student is led to suppose that our knowledge is more complete than is really the case, while at the same time he finds the greatest difficulty in obtain ing definite information on any particular point in which he is interested. Moreover, the implication that the details of develop ment are identical in members of the same or of allied groups is directly opposed to the results of recent investigations, which are showing more and more clearly that marked differences. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Embryology of Terebratulina With the great impulse given to the study of Zoology through the labors of Charles Darwin, renewed effort has been made to work up the embryology of those forms which have rendered so little satisfaction from the study of their mature characters, and thus through the labors of European naturalists new light has been thrown upon the develop mental history of Sagitta, Amphioxus, the Tunicates, and many other aberrant groups. And now while the embryology of nearly every prominent group has been more or less studied, and important relations revealed that would have otherwise been obscured, little or nothing has been done to throw any light on the embryology of the Brachiopods, a class represented by thousands of Species in past times, and one of which we have the earliest records in the rocks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of the Embryology of Invertebrates, Vol. 1 Since it has been our plan in writing the present work to proceed from the special to the general, and since naturally some time will elapse before the completion of the whole, we have thought that we should secure the gratitude of the reader if we published the first half of the special part at once. The second half of this part, embracing the Arthro pods, Molluscs, Molluscoidea, Tunicates, and Amphioxus, will appear shortly, while we hope to finish the general part, and therewith the whole book, in the course of the year 1890. Not to begin the special part of this work too abruptly, we have prefaced it with a short general introduction.
