This second edition has been thoroughly revised and updated. Nomenclature has been changed to reflect current thinking in the field. Book State and Provincial Amphibian and Reptile Publications For the United States and Canada Second Edition

Download or read book State and Provincial Amphibian and Reptile Publications For the United States and Canada Second Edition written by John J. Moriarty and published by . This book was released on 2024-06-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition bibliography is intended as a guide to the regional (state and provincial) herpetofaunal literature of the United States and Canada through December 31, 2023. This edition includes over 1300 references. We have limited our scope to include those published papers and books that deal primarily with single states or provinces or substantial portions thereof. Regional works of broader scope, covering up to three states or provinces have also been included. Only in cases of New England (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont) and the Maritimes (New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island) have more inclusive areas been admitted. Most publications dealing with smaller areas, such as counties, have not generally been included. Some in depth county reports (i.e., longer than ten pages) are included, since they normally contain information beyond the county boundaries. However, works dealing with large parks, significant drainage basins, mountain chains, and other subcomponents of individual states have been included on a case-by-case basis.

Book excerpt: Reptiles and Amphibians of Australia is a complete guide to Australia’s rich and varied herpetofauna, including frogs, crocodiles, turtles, tortoises, lizards and snakes. For each of the 1218 species there is a description of its appearance, distribution and habits. These descriptions are also accompanied by distribution maps and, in many cases, one of the book's more than 1000 colour photographs of living animals. The book also includes 130 simple-to-use dichotomous keys, accompanied by hundreds of explanatory drawings, that in most cases allow a specimen in hand to be identified. In addition, it has a comprehensive list of scientific references for those wishing to conduct more in-depth research, an extensive glossary, and basic guides to the collection, preservation and captive care of specimens. This classic work was originally published in 1975. The updated seventh edition contains a new Appendix that discusses recent changes and lists over 80 new or resurrected species and genera that have been added to the Australian frog and reptile fauna since the 2014 edition.

Book The Highlands

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard G. Lathrop
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2011-12-12
  • ISBN : 0813552087
  • Pages : 381 pages

Download or read book The Highlands written by Richard G. Lathrop and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-12 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Think of the Highlands as the “backyard” and “backstop” of the Philadelphia–New York–Hartford metroplex. A backyard that spans over three million acres across Pennsylvania, New York, and Connecticut, the Highlands serves as recreational open space for the metroplex’s burgeoning human population. As backstop, Highlands’ watersheds provide a ready source of high-quality drinking water for over fifteen million people. The Highlands is the first book to examine the natural and cultural landscape of this four-state region, showing how it’s distinctive and why its conservation is vital. Each chapter is written by a different leading researcher and specialist in that field, and introduces readers to another aspect of the Highlands: its geological foundations, its aquifers and watersheds, its forest ecology, its past iron industry. In the 1800s, the Highlands were mined, cutover, and then largely abandoned. Given time, the forests regenerated, the land healed, and the waters cleared. Increasingly, however, the Highlands are under assault again—polluted runoff contaminating lakes and streams, invasive species choking out the local flora and fauna, exurban sprawl blighting the rural landscape, and climate change threatening the integrity of its ecosystems. The Highlands makes a compelling case for land use planning and resource management strategies that could help ensure a sustainable future for the region, strategies that could in turn be applied to other landscapes threatened by urbanization across the country. The Highlands are a valuable resource. And now, so is The Highlands.
