Download or read book The American Thoroughbred Classic Reprint written by Thomas B. Merry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-10 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Thoroughbred Hence mv only endeavors have been to bring this book down to date and modern ize its contents so far as practicable. The great world is in a great hurry just now, and has but little time 'to devote to the perusal of ancient history. So I deal with horses of the last sixty years as much as possible, referring the reader to the works of Col. Bruce for the old days in Virginia; and to Mr. Osborne's work for the ancient occurrences on the turf in England and Ireland. They were both better writers than 1_ am and had ihore extensive libraries upon which to draw for information. Hence 1 make no claim for any great amount of originality in this book, but I can claim truth fully that its construction is more orderly and methodical than that of any book that has yet been published on this subject, either in America or in Europe. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making the American Thoroughbred: Especially in Tennessee, 1800-1845Every age and every nation has certain characteristic vices, which prevail almost universally, which scarcely any person scruples to avow, and which even rigid moralists but faintly censure. Succeeding genera tions change the fashion of their morals, with the fashion of their hats and their coaches; take some other kind of wickedness under their pat ronage, and wonder at the depravity of their ancestors. Macaulay. If I were to begin life again, I would go on the turf to get friends. They seem to me the only people who hold close together. I don't know why; it may be that each knows something that might hang the other, but the eflect is delightful and most peculiar. - harriet, lady ashburton, to lord houghton.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Horses and Horse Breeding Should I attempt to narrate one-half of what has been told me by such venerable horsemen, or to produce one - quarter of my correspondence with such persons, that matter would of itself make a book double the size of this; consequently, I con fine myself to the facts gathered as being of more importance to'my readers than to oblige them to wade through the waters that I have passed through in order to gather them. As to the illustrations contained herein, I have endeavored to give the true likeness of a few of the most noted horses mentioned, and that of myself, the author, thinking that these may be both interesting and instructive to my readers; but have refrained from filling up the book with illustrations for aign to the object of the work for the sake of making an unnecessarily large and high-priced book. Book The American Turf Classic Reprint

Download or read book The American Turf Classic Reprint written by John H. Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Turf Fora decade more than the three score years and ten allotted by a gracious Providence to man I have been awaiting the solemn call which comes to all human kind to weigh in, and then to the great Steward make account of the use to which I put the opportunities that came to me. In the active competition of life, when rivalries were keen, when ambitions created new fields and contests kept alert both mind and body, there was little time, indeed, to do more than merely store away in unclassified groups in memory events and incidents each one deserving of a sep arate chapter. To write a history of the American turf had long been a cherished project, but each day of a life of practically unremitting and exacting labor interfered until the westering sun of my eightieth year warns me that I must be up and doing if I would achieve my cherished ambition and leave behind me something which I trust will be worthy tribute to the best and the noblest sport that it is given to man to enjoy. If in the chapters which are to come there should be noted a tone of enthusiastic optimism, let the reader realize that sixty-five years of my life were spent in the activities oi the turf as a jockey, a trainer and an owner; that I have seen, and in many of them personally participated, practically all of. The great contests which gave fame to our thorough breds; that I have traveled on foot through valleys and over mountains, when but rough paths pointed the way between places now drawn close together by the bands of great trunk line railroads, leading the horse that was on conquest bent; that I spent weary weeks on journeys that now would be but the occupation of one brief day of luxurious travel; thati have seen the upward and the onward progress which has marked the rise of the thoroughbred in America from a little meet in some isolated though sport-loving place to the magnificent seasons of Belmont Park. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frank Forester's Horse and Horsemanship of the United States and British Provinces of North America, Vol. 2 of 2 The thoroughbred horse of America having been treated m extenso in the whole of the first volume, which is devoted solely to that branch of the subject, it is my purpose, in this, to deal with the various races and types of the animal in general use, of breeding, conditioning, stabling, breaking, and managing in general. The thoroughbred horse of America is the only family Of the horse, on this continent, of pure and unmixed blood. Nor can even this pretension be made out to satisfaction, in all cases, even where the American thoroughbred can trace directly in both lines, to imported English thoroughbred dam and sire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse Book: A Practical Treatise on the American Horse Breeding Industry as Allied to the Farm In the year 1885 Mr. J. H. Sanders, founder of The Breeder's Gazette, brought out a little volume entitled "Horse Breeding," which for a period of nearly twenty-five years has stood as the standard authority on the subject to which it was devoted. It passed through many editions in this country, besides being translated and republished in Germany. The "whirligig of time," however, has now rendered it desirable that the old work be supplanted by something more modem; hence the appearance of this volume at this time. Since the death of Mr. Sanders Sr. in 1899 the heavy end of the editorial work in connection with the horse department of The Breeder's Gazette has been carried by Mr. James H. S. Johnstone, former editor of the Chicago "Horseman." In his capacity as Assistant Editor of The Gazette during the past eight years, he has had exceptional opportunities for perfecting his already broad practical knowledge of the horse. It was believed therefore, that no writer upon this topic in the United States at this date was better equipped to undertake this task. It will be noted that in the preparation of this volume no effort has been made to deal with the horse as relates to the race course. Book Thoroughbreds Classic Reprint

Download or read book Thoroughbreds Classic Reprint written by William A. Fraser and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoroughbreds Less than a hundred miles from the city of Gotham, across broad green fields, dotted into squares and oblong valleys by full-leafed maple, and elm, and mulberry, was the village of Brookfield. A hundred years of expansion in the surrounding land had acted inversely with the little hamlet, and had pinched it into a hermitical isolation. The Brookfieldians had discovered a huge beetle in the amber of their serene existence; it was really the Reverend Dolman who had unearthed the monster. The beetle in the amber was horse racing, and the prime offender, practically the sole culprit, was John Porter. By an inconsistent twist of fate he was known as Honest John. His father before him had raced in old Kentucky to considerable purpose, and with the full vigor of a man who races for sport; and so to the son John, in consequence, had come little beyond a not-to-beeradicated love of thoroughbreds. To race squarely, honestly, and to the glory of high-couraged horses was to him as much a matter of religion as the consistent guardianship of parish morals was to the Reverend George Dolman. Therefore, two men of strong beliefs were set on opposite sides of the fence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse in America: A Practical Treatise on the Various Types Common in the United States, With Something of Their History and Varying Characteristics There have been so many books written about horses that in offering a new one I feel that an ex planation, if not an apology, is due. And I am embarrassed as to how to frame the explanation without seeming to reflect on the books previous ly given to the public. Nothing could be further from my desire. Most of these previous books have been devoted to special kinds or types of horses without any effort to cover avery broad field. Some others have been frankly partizan with the avowed purpose of proving that this type or that was the only one that was worth serious con sideration. All these are interesting, but valuable chiefly to the careful student bent on going into the subject of horse breeding and horse training in all of its branches. To do this an ordinary reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse Hay and grain have always been so abundant in America that every farmer could afford to keep at least one horse, however small his holding. The business of all except the older great cities is still largely carried on by men who were reared on the farm and who love the horse. This fact, coupled with cheap maintenance and abundant traffic, has-filled the cities as well as the country districts with horses.
