Book excerpt: Excerpt from Temperance Anecdotes: Original and Selected The drunkard is often a jolly fellow, and has a good share of mother wit, and that makes him a magnet of attraction in the bar-room. Gough used to sing a song well, and tell a good story, and he was one of the most popular drinkers of his day. Liquor-vendors could well afford to furnish such customers with free drinks. Book John Dale the American

Download or read book John Dale the American written by Email Julian and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Dale, the American: A Story To an American who has not been abroad, the men who con duct the business of this house present a curious and interesting spectacle, Representing two or three religious orders they are attired in the several unique costumes that distinguish them. Their faces are rubicund and'rosy, and express composure and satisfaction. Their bodies have a soft flabby out line. They perform their various ceremonial duties in a kind of mechanical, half unconscious mood that is induced by the unremitted and unchanged nature of the business. Mentally and physically they exhibit the marks of a careless and easy life. In contrast with the busy world that surrounds them, the strain of mind and muscle that prevails in the commnnity in which they live, they appear indolent, droning and slow. Among these seven or eight men are natives of Ireland, Italy, Spain and Mexico, and not a single American. They teach that the rights of conscience and personal liberty we enjoy under our Republic are nothing compared with the eternal joy and happiness they are commissioned of God to secure to us under certain conditions and contracts. In the exercise of free expression and thought, in the avenues of success thrown wide open to merit, in the glorious spec tacle of liberty, contentment and happiness, in the easy acquisition of knowledge by a free school system, they can recognize nothing of God. In the early morning of a day in summer, while the devout were tramp ing along the street one by one, and disappearing within this edifice to early mass, there came a man running at the top of his speed toward the vestry in the rear. When he had reached the door he pulled the bell violently, took off his hat, and crossed himself. Upon being led into the presence of Father Scully, whom he desired to see, he exclaimed, scant of breath. Book The Temperance Reform

Download or read book The Temperance Reform written by W. H. Daniels and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temperance Reform: And Its Great Reformers America is the birthplace of the modern Temperance Reform. Just as the idea of foreign missions - although contained in God's word - seemed to lie latent in the Evangelical Churches until the eighteenth century brought the idea out into organic action, so the seed-corn of Bible-temperance remained latent until the plowshare of effort turned it up to the sunlight. In Great Britain there were a few sporadic movements early in this century; but on our American soil the first temperance society of modern times was organized. A single locality in the "Empire State" has been most remarkably identified with the rise and progress of this beneficent reform. It is the locality which is linked with the healthful efficacy of water the world over - Sara-toga. In the county of that name, not far from the spot where the most decisive battle of the Revolution was fought, the first organization for arresting the drinking custom by a pledge was established just seventy years ago. In the borough of Saratoga Springs a national convention (held in 1835) placed the movement on the impregnable basis of total abstinence.
