Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American State and American Statesmen As the festivals of the Church are preceded by retreats, in order that humiliation may Open the door of joy, so is it wise that patriotic reflection should go before and even go under patriotic jubilees. Has our country been faithful to her origin, her duty, and her destiny? Have we been faith ful to our country? That patriotism alone is real which truly tries to ask and answer these questions. He is most a patriot, as he is most a Christian, whose soul kneels in penitence before she soars in exultation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous American Statesmen "With the great, one's thoughts and manners easily become great; ... what this country longs for is personalities, grand persons, to counteract its materialities," says Emerson. Such lives as are sketched in this book are a constant inspiration, both to young and old. They teach Garfield's oft-repeated maxim, that "the genius of success is still the genius of labor." They teach patriotism a - deeper love for and devotion to America. They teach that life, with some definite and noble purpose, is worth living. I have written of Abraham Lincoln, one of our greatest and best statesmen, in "Poor Boys Who Became Famous," which will explain its omission from this volume. Book The Statesmen of America in 1846 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Statesmen of America in 1846 Classic Reprint written by Sarah Mytton Maury and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Statesmen of America in 1846 The Journals announce a change in the political aspect of the country. It appears to me, however, that the Whig elections in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and especially in the Dictator State of New York, have arisen out of questions purely local, and affecting those sections alone. The actual true majorities in the United States will ever be vested in the Democratic ranks; naturally and invariably the dominant party in a Republic. It must be so; - though incidental circumstances would sometimes cause it to appear otherwise. I anticipate that the Americans will make a Democratic President in 1848; and, perhaps, a moderate or a Democratic Whig in 1852. But I will cease to interrupt you with my English fireside lucubrations; though I indulge in them frequently for the sake of recalling my pleasant residence at Washington, in the midst of its frank and social circles. I trust to be remembered, and sometimes to be wished for by many of the actors in those brilliant scenes, which their kindness rendered to me so fascinating. Will you, my dear Mr. Buchanan, present to our mutual friends, in the name of my husband, his most grateful acknowledgments for the hospitality and protection accorded to his Wife and Son by his faithful and generous countrymen; - and in my name, will you add, that I anticipate with delight the time when I shall return again to be among them. Book Wit and Humor of American Statesmen

Download or read book Wit and Humor of American Statesmen written by Henry Frederic Reddall and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wit and Humor of American Statesmen: A Collection From Various Sources Classified Under Appropriate Subject Headings If that man is blessed who causes two blades of grass to sprout where but one grew before, then surely those of our public men who, aside from their labors for the common weal, contribute to the gayety of nations are to be doubly commended. In this volume are garnered and classified some of the many bright sayings perpetrated on the stump, in legislature and primary, in the halls of Congress - enlivening many a prosy and protracted debate - or wherever men of opposite political creeds meet and make the sparks of wit fly and scintillate. Probably in no other country does politics enter so largely and so intimately into the daily life of the people as in the United States, and nowhere else is the search-light of celebrity turned so relentlessly upon our public men, be they merely politicians or those who have graduated by sheer force of intellect into the higher rank of statesmen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketches of Eminent American Statesmen: With Speeches, Addresses and Letters The public are indebted for this volume to her, who, for many years was the devoted wife, the liv ing helpmate of its distinguished author, and this fact lends a pathetic interest to the work itself. Mrs. Perry, though advanced in years, and bowed down by a great grief, assumed the task of compiling and arranging for publication the writings of her husband, and no tribute to the memory of the dead patriot and statesman could be more appropriate, or more touching than this offered by her loving heart. No monument to perpetuate his name and his fame could so arouse the universal sympathy of our people as does this simple memorial of her devotion to him and of her reverence for his memory. Very patient was he about this, and even when he was President and harried constantly we find him stopping to acknowledge for her an invitation to take some Tea, and at the bottom of the sheet adding a pious bit of finesse, thus The President requests me to send his compliments and only regrets that the pressure of affairs compels him to forego the Pleasure of seeing you. Book Statesmen Classic Reprint

Download or read book Statesmen Classic Reprint written by Noah Brooks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Statesmen IN the preparation of this work the author's aim has been to present a series of character sketches of the eminent persons selected for por traiture. These selections of subjects have been made for the purpose of placing before the pres ent generation of Americans salient points in the careers, of public men, whose attainments in statesmanship were the result of their own indi vidual exertions and force of character rather than of fortunate circumstances. Therefore, these brief studies are not biographies. The au thor had the good fortune of personal acquaint ance with most of the statesmen of the latter part of the period illustrated by his pen; and he considers it an advantage to his readers that they may thus receive from him some of the impres sions which these conspicuous personages made upon the mental vision of those who heard and saw them while they were living examples of nobility of aim and success of achievement in American statesmanship. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous American Statesmen Orators, Past and Present, Vol. 2 of 6: With Biographical Sketches and Their Famous Orations Hamilton's career is one of great interest to those who seek to study intelligently the beginnings of the nation. A man of great personal force and of strong aristocratic feeling, he represented the principle of authority, of government framed and adminis tered by the few for the benefit of the many. In a series of papers Hamilton had exposed the inherent defects of the existing Confederation, and it is now generally acknowledged that the first suggestion toward the establishment of an adequate Federal Government came from him. Although the particular plan proposed by Hamilton in the Federal Convention, which met at Philadelphia in 1787, was laid aside, yet it was the spirit of the system conceived by him which then and there prevailed, and has since been a controlling principle in the administration of the Federal Government. Guizot has said of him that there is not in the Constitution of the United States an element of order, of force, and of duration, which he did not powerfully contribute to inject into it and cause to predominate. While it was still uncertain whether the Constitution would be adopted by the several State conventions, Hamilton, in conjunction with James Madison and John Jay, wrote, as has been said, The Federalist, to recommend the proposed national organic law as the best obtainable under the circumstances.
