Book The American Spirit in the Writings of Americans of Foreign Birth Classic Reprint

Download or read book The American Spirit in the Writings of Americans of Foreign Birth Classic Reprint written by Robert E. Stauffer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-13 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Spirit in the Writings of Americans of Foreign Birth Nearly all the selections included in this volume will be found charged with a strong human quality, revealing the poignant Wickness of the stranger in a new world, his sensitiveness, his forward-looking hope, his realization of both the humorous and the tragic side of his case, his fine hero-worship, his firm belief in the unique mission and high destiny of his adopted country, and his faith in the brother hood of man and the dawning of a new day upon the earth. It is not within the scope of this introduction to plead for any particular immigration policy. Whether we shall adopt one of rigid restriction or assume a liberal attitude, and what shall be the bases of the selection of the immigrant in the future, are questions to be answered not by the petty poli tician, the unscrupulous demagogue, the uninformed pro vincial, or the alarmists of little faith who, in their hysteria, would completely reverse the traditions of the nation by closing the gates entirely, but are matters to be determined by fair-minded and representative leaders after a careful and unbiased study of the problem in its various economic, social and national aspects. The chief concern here is with our attitude toward the millions of unassimilated immigrants already among us. To them it would be well for most of us to give our attention before attempting to solve the in trieste and perplexing question of an immigration policy. Perhaps if we did, we might get more light and arrive at a more unanimous and consistent conclusion regarding the ad mission of those who are now said to be ready in such great numbers to knock at our gates. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Introducing the American Spirit: Look inside the book: These unconventional studies, most of which received their inspiration through the visit of the Herr Director and his charming wife, are here offered as an Introduction to the American Spirit, not only to the Herr Director and the Frau Directorin, but to those Americans who do not realize that a nation, as well as man, "cannot live by bread alone;" that its most precious asset, its greatest element of strength, is its Spirit, and that the elements out of which the Spirit is made, are so rare, so delicate, that when once wasted they cannot readily be replaced. ...What the Herr Director and the Frau Directorin would say to the sky-scraper meant to me, not whether they would say it is beautiful or ugly, but whether they would discover in it the Spirit of America, the daring spirit of the pioneers who built Towers of Babel, though reversing the process; for they began with a confusion of tongues which outbabeled Babel, and finished on a day of Pentecost when men said: "We do hear them all speaking our own tongue, the mighty works of God."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of America: As Shown by Her Great Documents Dates. There is another and more vital His tory, - that of the Mind and Soul of a people. Records of the collective mind of a nation write the History of its Spirit. The birth and development of the Spirit of America are clearly recorded in cer tain public documents. These records, contained in broadly accepted public documents and in speeches of individual men, have been the outspeaking of a true national voice, - the expression of the collective Spirit of a people. Casting out from the huge mass of public documents such as are of transitory interest or simply new statements of already accepted prin ciples, the list is not long. It will be well for our people if the same courage to search for and follow the Right is shown by the records in the next as it has been in the last three hundred years. The native of the New World may, in dress and appearance, in culture and refinement, pass unnoticed in European society, but no soon er does he open his lips, than his intonation, choice of words, and structure of sentence, betray his foreign birth. The difference is, in reality, very slight, but it is characteristic, and as there is no better key to the habits and temper of a people, than the study of its watchwords and nicknames, its likes and dislikes of terms and phrases, we have endeavored to collect enough of these peculiari ties to furnish an idea of the way we talk.
