Not illustrated. 1921 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XI CHOKES, PATTERNS, AND VELOCITIES BORING shotguns has reached its present state of perfection, if we are permitted to call it such, through a process of evolution. A decade or so ago all sorts of artifices for throwing shot in a closer mass were called chokes, though some of them meant a freeing of the muzzle, others a recess or two recesses where the shot charge spread and was then contracted. There were recesschokes, bell-chokes, multiple-chokes, jug-chokes, and at last taper-chokes. Some of these styles were fairly effective, others were effective temporarily, and others are in use at the present time. To-day manufacturers have settled upon methods of choking their barrels so similar that results in all our best arms are practically equal. Many gunbuilders claim that their barrels are a true taper-choke, the natural inference being that the bore tapers evenly from breech to muzzle, depending for close shooting qualities upon the gradual contraction of the charge. The theoretical taperchoke appeals to the gun buyer who does not like the idea of suddenly upsetting and jamming his charge with a probability of leading his gun. Theoretically the taper-choke is perfect, but I doubt if it would work at all in practice, and neither have I ever been able to find a gun that had it despite all the claims of manufacturers. My own belief is that a tube with an even taper from breech to muzzle so that the load could adjust itself as it passed out would shoot little if any closer than a plain cylinder. Choke boring, as will presently appear, depends for its efficacy upon jamming the shot together at the muzzle with such force that they will cling together in a mass for some distance after they leave the gun. A gradual contraction, such as...

Book The Gunning of America

  • Author : Pamela Haag
  • Publisher : Basic Books

Download or read book The Gunning of America written by Pamela Haag and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have always loved guns. This special bond was forged during the American Revolution and sanctified by the Second Amendment. It is because of this exceptional relationship that American civilians are more heavily armed than the citizens of any other nation. Or so we're told. In The Gunning of America, historian Pamela Haag overturns this conventional wisdom. American gun culture, she argues, developed not because the gun was exceptional, but precisely because it was not: guns proliferated in America because throughout most of the nation's history, they were perceived as an unexceptional commodity, no different than buttons or typewriters. Focusing on the history of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, one of the most iconic arms manufacturers in America, Haag challenges many basic assumptions of how and when America became a gun culture. Under the leadership of Oliver Winchester and his heirs, the company used aggressive, sometimes ingenious sales and marketing techniques to create new markets for their product. Guns have never "sold themselves"; rather, through advertising and innovative distribution campaigns, the gun industry did. Through the meticulous examination of gun industry archives, Haag challenges the myth of a primal bond between Americans and their firearms. Over the course of its 150 year history, the Winchester Repeating Arms Company sold over 8 million guns. But Oliver Winchester-a shirtmaker in his previous career-had no apparent qualms about a life spent arming America. His daughter-in-law Sarah Winchester was a different story. Legend holds that Sarah was haunted by what she considered a vast blood fortune, and became convinced that the ghosts of rifle victims were haunting her. She channeled much of her inheritance, and her conflicted conscience, into a monstrous estate now known as the Winchester Mystery House, where she sought refuge from this ever-expanding army of phantoms. In this provocative and deeply-researched work of narrative history, Haag fundamentally revises the history of arms in America, and in so doing explodes the clichéthat have created and sustained our lethal gun culture.

Book 50 Guns That Changed America

Download or read book 50 Guns That Changed America written by Bruce Wexler and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-08-29 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of America—And Our Guns The history of the United States is, like it or not, interwoven with the history of firearms. The young colony needed technologically advanced arms to hunt for food for survival and to maintain a secure base in the face of Native American opposition to European settlers. As the Vikings discovered several centuries earlier, the Indians were tough opponents expert in the use of bladed weapons and bows. The advent of firearms gave European settlers an advantage, although it was only a matter of time until the Native Americans gained access to firearms themselves. Ironically, this was often through unscrupulous white traders. Because these superior weapons gained them their freedom, the principle of the right to bear arms remains etched into the American psyche to this day. Since then, the US has been through a terrible Civil War, at which time many different guns were invented and deployed against brother Americans, each one playing a part in the eventual outcome of the war. After the Civil War came a period of frontier establishment when the country consolidated itself from coast to coast. The outside world knows this best as the Wild West, and again guns played a big part in civilizing unruly parts of the nation. Two world wars also tested America's ingenuity in ensuring that its troops were competitively armed. The invention of automatic weapons by John M. Browning made this a reality. In the post Second World War period the country has had to fight its way through Korea, Vietnam, and numerous other conflicts in the Middle East and Asia. Gun development has not stood still at any time in United States history, and this book illustrates fifty examples that form essential parts of that story. 50 Guns That Changed America will explore the most significant American weapons from the early days of firepower to the amazing modern guns in use today, including: Simeon North/Hall pistol Dimick plains rifle Spencer carbine rifle Winchester Model 1866 Smith & Wesson Army revolver Colt Peacemaker M60 machine gun ArmaLite AR-18 machine gun Each firearm is illustrated in full color with archive photography of the manufacturers and the guns in action where possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a soldier must face multiple opponents at close quarters, few weapons can match the effectiveness of the shotgun. From World War I to the War on Terror, the shotgun has been a devastating weapon in the hands of US troops. For urban combat, prisoner control and shipboard operations, it remains as deadly today as it was a century ago. This book examines various types, from the early combat shotguns through to the riot gun and trench gun versions used in World War l. So effective was the trench shotgun, the Germans complained it violated the “Rules of War” as an inhumane weapon, and threatened to execute troops captured carrying one. More recently during the War on Terror, shotguns have been used to clear cave complexes in Afghanistan and buildings in Iraq, but especially to blow doors open during entries and searches. Featuring specially commissioned full-color artwork, this is the story of the origins, development and the use of the combat shotgun in US service, from the trenches of World War l, to the Korean and Vietnamese Wars and lately the cave complexes of Afghanistan.
