Book The American s Hand Book to Vienna and the Exhibition

Download or read book The American s Hand Book to Vienna and the Exhibition written by C. W. Debernardy and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American's Hand-Book to Vienna and the Exhibition: Comprising All Necessary Information in Regard to Routes, Expenses, Hotels, Boarding-Houses, Postage, Moneys, Railway Fares, Steamers, Cars, Legations, &C., With Time Tables, Maps, &C This book has no pretension to enter the lists as a rival or opposition to Appleton, Murray or Baedeker, the well-known Continental Guide-Books. Its object is to be the handy guide and companion of practical information for the Tourist en route or on his arrival. Once settled at his place of destination, he will have access to fuller guides and descriptions to supplement the mere indications given in this work. It was formerly thought necessary to give copious directions to travellers for their journey, when travelling was slow, difficult and occasional; but now that rapidity, ease and frequency are in the ascendant, a few hints will suffice. First in importance to the traveller is money. A sufficient provision in any currency, or of any character, is easily convertible into current coin in any state, city or town on the continent of Europe, through bankers, money-changers and the proprietors of hotels, who will readily take and exchange moneys of almost any country. The American traveller has usually his letters of credit, which speak for themselves; otherwise, French gold or English bank-notes are the best money to take into Germany. The former circulates freely everywhere. A very little attention to the money-table of this volume will make the traveller quite master of the subject. Perhaps nowhere in Europe does money and exchange vary more than at Vienna, where the fluctuations are frequent, rapid and great. Passports used to be the great nuisance and subject of grief to the traveller. Now they are seldom asked for, but they are frequently useful to prove identity, to claim letters, and even to obtain admittance of favor to places out of the usual course. They cost little, occupy little space, and therefore had better be had. Difference of language is not as much an obstacle now as formerly. In North Germany, on the Rhine, and in the beaten track of tourists, English and French are almost universally spoken by waiters, attendants and servants, at hotels, cafes and restaurants - at Vienna not so much so. The upper classes are excellent linguists, and nearly all speak English with fluency and purity. In the commercial world French is more generally known; but at many of the places of entertainment, restaurants, cafes, &c., only German waiters are to be met with. Book The Exhibition and Experience Design Handbook

Download or read book The Exhibition and Experience Design Handbook written by Timothy J. McNeil and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-04-04 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s multi-modal, participatory exhibitions and attractions are bound by a desire to convey information, excite the viewer and create social and narrative experiences. Without design at the helm and employed effectively, these experiential moments would not become lasting memories that inform and inspire an increasingly sophisticated audience. This full-color illustrated handbook, based on the author’s research and expertise as an exhibition designer, educator, and critic, is the first title to simultaneously explain how to design exhibitions and attractions successfully; contextualize contemporary exhibition design practice through its historical and theoretical underpinnings; elevate understanding of one of the most rapidly evolving and trans-disciplinary creative disciplines; illuminate exhibition design’s contributions to the expanding global market for civic, cultural, commercial and entertainment experiences; and reframe the exhibition design process using a set of recurring tropes and the methods they employ, making this book distinct from other practice-based, museological or commercially-driven titles. This full-color book with over 250 photographs and drawings uses real-world examples, museum and exhibition design studio profiles, historical and contemporary voices, and draw on the author’s own creative practice and exhibition making experience, as well as contributions from his extensive network of international museum, attraction, and design professionals. The author introduces a new methodology for understanding exhibition and experience design. One that elevates understanding of one of the most rapidly evolving and trans-disciplinary creative disciplines. Twelve easy-to-follow illustrated chapters introduce a set of reoccurring exhibition design conventions or “tropes” that are omnipresent in exhibition making and can be used to chart a new methodology for understanding exhibition design and its process.

Book Exhibitions and the Development of Modern Planning Culture

Download or read book Exhibitions and the Development of Modern Planning Culture written by Robert Freestone and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of city planning theory and practice in the first half of the twentieth century was captured and driven by a range of exhibitionary practices in a variety of settings globally, from international expos to local public halls. The agendas of the promoters varied, but exhibitions generally drew their social legitimacy from their status as ’appropriate educative agencies of citizenship’. Bringing together a range of international case studies, this volume explores the highly visual genre of public planning exhibitions worldwide. In doing so, it provides a unique lens on the development of modern urban planning and design from the late 19th century to the present day. Focussing mainly on the first half of the 20th century, it looks in particular at historic exhibitions which sought to transform urban society’s understanding of the possibilities of planning as a force for social betterment. The visuality of presentation, contemporary reactions, and outcomes for the planning profession and the community are explored to make for a unique, innovative and attractive approach to the history of planning ideas. The five major themes are the visual representation of ideas and ideologies; institutions and individuals involved; the broader context of display; and the impacts and implications for the development planning culture. With contributors including Karl Fischer, John Gold, Carola Hein, Peter Larkham, Javier Monclus, and Mark Tewdwr-Jones, the dominant intellectual paradigm further unifying the collection is planning history.
