Book Pens and Swords

Download or read book Pens and Swords written by Marda Dunsky and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2008-02-06 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As world attention is renewed and refocused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict at the sixtieth anniversary of its seminal year of 1948, Marda Dunsky takes a close look at how more than two dozen major American print and broadcast outlets have reported the conflict in recent years. Beginning with the failed Camp David summit of July 2000 through the waning of the second Palestinian uprising in the summer of 2004, she finds that the media omit two key contextual elements: the significant impact that U.S. policy has had and continues to have on the trajectory of the conflict, and the way international law and consensus have addressed the key issues of Israeli settlement and annexation policies and Palestinian refugees. Dunsky explores how reports of the conflict routinely take on the contours of American policy and rarely challenge the premises of this "Washington consensus." She also examines the media's responses to allegations of biased coverage and gauges the effect that mainstream news reporting has on public opinion and U.S. foreign policy.

Book U S Health in International Perspective

Download or read book U S Health in International Perspective written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-04-12 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is among the wealthiest nations in the world, but it is far from the healthiest. Although life expectancy and survival rates in the United States have improved dramatically over the past century, Americans live shorter lives and experience more injuries and illnesses than people in other high-income countries. The U.S. health disadvantage cannot be attributed solely to the adverse health status of racial or ethnic minorities or poor people: even highly advantaged Americans are in worse health than their counterparts in other, "peer" countries. In light of the new and growing evidence about the U.S. health disadvantage, the National Institutes of Health asked the National Research Council (NRC) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to convene a panel of experts to study the issue. The Panel on Understanding Cross-National Health Differences Among High-Income Countries examined whether the U.S. health disadvantage exists across the life span, considered potential explanations, and assessed the larger implications of the findings. U.S. Health in International Perspective presents detailed evidence on the issue, explores the possible explanations for the shorter and less healthy lives of Americans than those of people in comparable countries, and recommends actions by both government and nongovernment agencies and organizations to address the U.S. health disadvantage.

Its editors were arrested by the federal government. One editor died awaiting trial. The story of this newspaper is the story of America. THE AMERICAN HISTORY WE WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO KNOW In this monumental story of two newspaper editors whom Presidents Washington and Adams sought to jail for sedition, American Aurora offers a new and heretical vision of this nation's beginnings, from the vantage point of those who fought in the American Revolution to create a democracy--and lost.

Book The Black Agenda

Download or read book The Black Agenda written by Glen Ford and published by OR Books. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Black politics is key to recognizing the most important social dynamics of the United States. And over the past 40 years no other commentator has been as deeply insightful about the paradoxes and personalities of Black American public life as the journalist and radio host Glen Ford. In this stunning overview, Ford draws on his work for Black Agenda Report, one of the most incisive and perceptive publications of the progressive left, to examine the often-competing struggles for class power and identity in the Black movement. In a survey that stretches from the racist assault on Black people in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, through the engineered bankruptcy of Detroit, to the false promise of the Obama presidency, Ford casts a caustic eye on the empty posturing and corruption of the Democratic Party leadership. This, he insists, depends for electoral success on a Black constituency whilst co-opting a section of its leadership in a perpetual selling out of working people's interests. Profiling along the way storied Black leaders such as Martin Luther King, Malcom X and James Brown (for whom Ford once worked), The Black Agenda looks, too, beyond American shores at conflicts in Libya, the Congo and the Middle East showing how these are imbricated with racism at home. Ford concludes with a discussion of the Black Lives Matter movement, setting out both its potentialities and pitfalls.
