Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Red Cross in Greece The American Red Cross has maintained a mission in Greece for a period of nine months. During that period the uniforms of the American Red Cross officer and of the American Red Cross trained nurse and social worker have become familiar to a large proportion of the Greek people; and the people of certain sections of the country have been able to observe with their own eyes the business upon which the American organization has been engaged. We need no introduction, for example, to the inhabitants of Eastern Macedonia and the larger Aegean islands; and the people in Athens, in a general way, know the purpose of the mission. But probably the Greek people as a whole have been somewhat at a loss to understand why the American Red Cross was here - what were the motives and objects of the mission; and, naturally, they have had little opportunity of learning what we have actually been doing in Greece - the nature and extent of our undertakings. It has, therefore, seemed to me, as head of the mission, proper to issue this statement about the American Red Cross Commission to Greece, and to review briefly, the work upon which we have been engaged and which has now been brought to a conclusion. For the mission will have failed in one of its objects if, as a result of our sojourn in Greece, the Greek people and the American people are not drawn together in closer bonds of sympathy, understanding and friendship. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Red Cross Commission to Greece: Relief Work Among the Villages of Mount Pangeon On November 6, 1918, a party consisting of Lieutenant Colonel Edward Capps, Commissioner to Greece, Major Carl E. Black, Major Clifford W. Barnes, Mr. B. H. Hill and Mr. C. W. Blegen left Athens by rail on a mission of investigation in Eastern Macedonia. The Greek Commission had arrived in Athens only two weeks before this date. At that time it controlled not one pound of supplies, and had only the hope of coming shipments with which to organize relief work. In Salonica much information was gathered as to conditions prevailing in Eastern Macedonia, and it was ascertained that Greece was at that moment faced with the serious problem of repatriating many thousands of refugees who had been, during the war, held as prisoners in Bulgaria. These refugees were then straggling back toward their homes in the different parts of Eastern Macedonia. The attention of Colonel Capps and the other members of the party was called particularly to the mountainous region of the Pangaeon, where the country had been most severely devastated, inasmuch as the villages of this district lay within the limits of the second and third Bulgarian lines of defense, and almost the total population had been deported from their homes. It was obvious that here was a field of special need, and immediate action was necessary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The American Red Cross in the Great War Classic Reprint

Download or read book The American Red Cross in the Great War Classic Reprint written by Henry Pomeroy Davison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Red Cross, in the Great War IT is the effort of this book to set forth the scope, char acter and effect of the work of the American Red Cross during the Great War. When the war closed more than thirty million Americans were enrolled in the organiza tion. Some of these were in foreign fields; most of them were at home. But, in one way or another, they were all helping. All of them working together made up the American Red Cross. Stories of special sacrifice or devotion cannot be given here and yet few organizations have so closely touched the great currents of human life. Detailed narratives will accordingly follow this book. I have sought here to sum marize the work of the thirty millions as a whole. To characterize the Red Cross work of any man or woman. Or to attempt to describe it with any regard to proper perspective, would be invidious if not impossible. I have therefore omitted the mention of names. The highest satisfaction any worker in the Red Cross can derive from his work is from the fact that the work itself was well done. The files of the War Council have been freely drawn upon in the preparation of this book. And I want to make special acknowledgment to every member of the force at headquarters. And to the special correspondents and staffs of our foreign commissions, who seemingly have vied with one another in supplying me, either orally or in writing, with material without which the scope of this book could not be what it is. Indeed it may accurately be said that the book itself is a product of the American Red Cross. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Red Cross Work Among the French People From the inception of the war partisanship for France was palpable in the United States. One heard and read recurring allusions to the vital aid she had rendered us during our War of the Revolution and the debt owed her by the world because of her consistent and heroic efforts to secure the rights of the individual. France had been the crucible where all the great social and political questions of Europe had first been tried out. She was ever one of the leaders in the onward march of civilization. In art, science, and literature she had held aloft the standard and throughout her history her courage and gallantry had burned like those inextinguishable lamps on the altars of the ancients. The wonder of the Crusades, that still glows for us like a lonely jewel in the dark setting of the Middle Ages, is due mainly to her and she it was who first emerged from the gloom of those stagnant years and gave to Europe the initial example of a new and definite social organization. It was on her soil that the people, as distinguished from the aristocracy, first united in the Third Estate whose voice, sounding always the slogan of justice for the masses, was heard and heeded in other countries. From her Revolution came those ideas that are today the basis of her public and private laws; ideas which "the Republic and the Empire, by their victories, disseminated in every part of Europe and which are destined to spread over the whole world because they are summed up in the one word justice." Book Disasters

Download or read book Disasters written by J. Byron Deacon and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Disasters: And the American Red Cross in Disaster Relief Just as the last proofs of this little book were being corrected came the tragic news of the Halifax disaster, re-enforcing Mr. Deacon's plea for the fullest possible measure of preparedness in advance of such public calamities. The American Red Cross has administered, during the past fifteen years, millions of dollars for the relief of hundreds of thousands of sufferers from disaster in this country and abroad. Not alone has it met immediate needs, but it has oftentimes, after disasters, devoted months of cooperative effort to the reconstruction of a place and the restoration of its people. In the course of this work, a method and a technique have been developed which deserve to be recorded for the benefit of all who may be called upon to undertake like responsibilities. The experience slowly gained has been locked too long within the personal knowledge of those who have marked out the way, and to the author of these pages we are indebted for a drawing together, for the first time, of the significant things about the different forms of disaster relief. These he puts clearly, forcefully, and in brief compass. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Story of the American Red Cross in Italy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of the American Red Cross in Italy Classic Reprint written by Charles M. Bakewell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the American Red Cross in Italy The purpose of this book is not to give a detailed statistical account of Red Cross activities in Italy, - that may be found in the various Department Reports, - but rather to tell the American people who contributed so generously to the Red Cross funds the simple tale of what their dollars did in Italy. It is a great and inspiring record and one in which Americans may well take pride. The American Red Cross came to Italy in the hour of her greatest need, not to bring charity, but to render justice, by alleviating as far as possible the sufferings brought on by two hard years of fighting in our common cause before our own country took up arms. The material aid that it has been privileged to give, at the front, in canteens, in assistance to hospitals, and in helping refugees and the needy families of soldiers, stretches from one end of Italy to the other and looms large in figures. But it is not in figures that one may find the true measure of its achievement. What mattered most in winning the war, and what matters most for our future relations, is the fact that through this material aid the Red Cross succeeded in translating into deeds the soul of America, in making it plain to the Italians that we were there to work as brothers, filled with a common enthusiasm and inspired by common ideals; the fact that through it the heart of America touched the.heart of Italy, strengthening the bonds of friendship that bind our nations together, by mutual understanding and mutual respect. Book Red Cross Iron Cross Classic Reprint

Download or read book Red Cross Iron Cross Classic Reprint written by Axel Munthe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Red Cross Iron Cross The day of reckoning will come. The day when the civilized world sets to work to pick out the criminals from the barbarians, the criminals responsible for the atrocities and infamies committed by the savage foe. The documents for the accusation furnished by the accused themselves - a most valuable contribution to the sombre study of German criminology - establish beyond doubt that it is on the leaders and not on the men that the heaviest responsibility will fall. The hanging evidence against several of the commanding German Generals in Belgium is overwhelming - their proclamations to their victims and their orders to their troops contain damning proofs that they are morally and legally responsible for the slaughter of hundreds of helpless civilians, men, women and children. Accusations of instigation to murder, even of the wounded, are brought against officers of all ranks by their men in their note-books - now in the hands of the Belgian, French and English authorities.
