Book excerpt: Translator name not noted above: Arthur Hugh Clough Originally published between 1909 and 1917 under the name "Harvard Classics," this stupendous 51-volume set-a collection of the greatest writings from literature, philosophy, history, and mythology-was assembled by American academic CHARLES WILLIAM ELIOT (1834-1926), Harvard University's longest-serving president. Also known as "Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf," it represented Eliot's belief that a basic liberal education could be gleaned by reading from an anthology of works that could fit on five feet of bookshelf. Volume XII features selections from the biographical writings of the Greek historian PLUTARCH (c. 46 A.D.-120 A.D.), which offer us the only sources of information that have survived for some personages, and exerted a profound influence on the literature to come, particularly throughout the Renaissance and Enlightenment. Included are Plutarch's biographies of Themistocles, Pericles, Aristides, Coriolanus, Demosthenes, Cicero, and others.

Book A Modern Plutarch

Download or read book A Modern Plutarch written by Robert Lloyd George and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the Ancient Greek biographer, this volume offers comparative assessments of important leaders from American and British history. One of the most significant and enduring texts of Ancient Greece is Plutarch’s Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans. In it, the “Father of Biography” paired off the most notable and influential figures of the classical world, placing their lives and legacies next to each other, allowing the comparisons and juxtapositions to reveal new truths about these famous men. He compared Demosthenes with Cicero, Alexander the Great with Julius Caesar; the result was an intellectual masterpiece still referred to by historians today. In A Modern Plutarch, Robert Lloyd George applies this model of biography to the most influential statesmen and stateswomen of American and British history. Lloyd George compares figures such as Edmund Burke, a prophet of modern conservatism, and Thomas Paine, a champion for the common man. He juxtaposes Winston Churchill and Abraham Lincoln, two of the greatest wartime leaders of the past 200 years, and Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, the first divisive, the latter popular. In doing so, he draws parallels between their lives and philosophies, while revealing the traits that made them unique. An essential primer on leadership and an inspiring account of exceptional lives, A Modern Plutarch offers remarkable insight into some of the greatest minds of the modern era.

Download or read book Ethical Education in Plutarch written by Sophia Xenophontos and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to being the author of the Parallel Lives of noble Greeks and Romans, Plutarch of Chaeronea (AD c.46-c.120) is widely known for his rich ethical theory, which has ensured him a reputation as one of the most profound moralists in antiquity and beyond. Previous studies have considered Plutarch's moralism in the light of specific works or group of works, so that an exploration of his overall concept of ethical education remains a desideratum. Bringing together a wide range of texts from both the Parallel Lives and the Moralia, this study puts the moralising agents that Plutarch considers important for ethical development at the heart of its interpretation. These agents operate in different educational settings, and perform distinct moralising roles, dictated by the special features of the type of moral education they are expected to enact. Ethical education in Plutarch becomes a distinctive manifestation of paideia vis-à-vis the intellectual trends of the Imperial period, especially in contexts of cultural identity and power. By reappraising Plutarch's ethical authority and the significance of his didactic spirit, this book will appeal not only to scholars and students of Plutarch, but to anyone interested in the history of moral education and the development of Greek ethics.
