Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Philosophy Pragmatism Critically Considered in Relation, to Present-Day Theology The substance of this essay appeared in the primary number of the Bibliotheca Sacra for 1909. Most publications since regarding the theme have tended to confirm the author's view that the subject was approached critically in its central position. Gratifying as this conviction was, it entailed also the regret not to have treated the subject somewhat more fully. Considerable additions and some changes have therefore been made in the present little treatise so as to bring together a fairly complete survey of pragmatism in its outstanding characteristics. The subsequent works of its gifted and scholarly exponent Prof. James plainly bear witness to the fact that the real point at issue is a denial of the supernatural, a discarding of the notion of being, involving a static element. It is a revolt against all tradition, authority and unity; it sets itself against all regulative norms and law. In this central theme are involved all minor points and side issues of the discussion. The intellectual leader, whose labors are now ended, has stated the pragmatic position with his customary clearness, and has endeavored to answer its many critics. This out burst Of scientific enthusiasm and moral fervor may be fairly said to epitomize the spirit and the motif of modern philosophy. Whenever and wherever our modern life has presented its problems or vouchsafed its satisfactions one or the other, or both, of these interests have been implicated. And philosophic thought has taken its cues accordingly. Not every thinker has been as catholic in his interests as was Kant. T 0 some the starry heavens above have seemed all-important, while to others the moral law within has made the strongest appeal. But few thinkers, no matter how great their bias in one direction, have been insensible to the problems lying in the other direction. And the pro foundest systems Of philosophy have come from those men who, like Kant, have been concerned with both the natural and the spiritual, the real and the ideal, the is and the ought, have felt these to be incom patible and have sought to penetrate to some deeper principle of unity. This more fundamental principle of unity, however, has not been forthcoming. Spinoza's God or Nature, Kant's Thing in Itself, Hegel's Absolute, and Spencer's Unknowable - all are but grim testimonies of the persistence of the problem. It is as urgent today as it was in an earlier and more metaphysical age. To be sure, we have become suspicious of the possibility or the worth of ultimate principles and impatient with any philosophy which attempts to formulate such principles. With the development of scientific methods, our practical problems have so multiplied and our immediate experience has become SO engaging as to leave us little time or inclination for the consideration of problems of a more strictly philosophic character. Furthermore, as knowledge has become more and more specialized, a sort of division of labor has served to isolate the various fields of human interests and activities, and to Obscure the fact Of their connections. But, while this specialization of knowledge has its advantages, it likewise has its dangers. The quality Of the work done by the particular sciences is apt to be impaired by too rigid an isolation of their respective fields. Book excerpt: Why speak about a new practical theology, when practical theology seems to be as old as theology itself? Is another "new approach" really necessary? The work aims to set practical theology on a new foundation as it explores the discipline's modes of discourse, leaving aside the question of contents. Practical theology is examined from the point of view of its workings, as it attempts to grasp and give account of faith practices. In the course of this examination, questions relative to the linguistic apparatus are raised. Is this apparatus always coherent? Does it allow for the creation of a relevant theological discourse? On what philosophical traditions does it depend? Experience, language and belief are key notions around which the whole system revolves. The perspective adopted here is largely indebted to contemporary American philosophy. Pragmatism (Peirce, James, Dewey, Rorty) and Analytic philosophy (Quine, Goodman, Putnam, Davidson) are employed in a quest for new epistemological footings. While the result is at times disconcerting, it brings with it a surprisingly rich contribution to reflection in the field. This book offers theologians a tool which allows them to construct theological discourses which are anchored in faith practices. It fills a void in contemporary theology. Many theologians, no longer content to simply teach at a university, have chosen to work in close collaboration with Christian communities or with groups interested in the relationships between religion and society. Up to this point, theologians such as these have not had the tools at their disposal which would allow them to take account of their own practices. Opening out into many fields, Practical Theology. A New Approach will also be of interest to any researcher, philosopher or scientist, who is interested in the questions surrounding the construction of discourse based on human practices, whatever their provenance.
