Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Age of American Oratory Although the Revolutionary orators ushered in this Golden Age of our Eloquence, no attempt has been made to describe them; because such a de scription now must be, at best, only a second-hand copy of their traditionary lineaments. Many of the illustrative remarks and conversa tions alluded to in this volume, especially of Mr. Clay, Mr. Webster, and Mr. Choate, were expressed directly to the author, or in his presence, by these gentlemen. He has not, however, thought it worth while to particularize these instances in the text; except where an important principle is asserted by such eminent authorities, or an important historical fact is narrated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Orator: Comprising a Collection, Principally From American Authors, of the Most Admired Specimens of Congressional, Forensic, Pulpit and Popular Eloquence; With Dialogues and Poetical Extracts, Adapted to Public Recitation The compiler of the subsequent pages claims but a very small share of merit in the work; but thinks it a duty to himself, to apprize the reader of some of the disadvantages under which it was executed. It was printed nearly thirty miles distant from his residence, and the pun was started before one sheet was fully prepared. He was, therefore, obliged to keep pace with the printer, in seeking and tran scribing the selections, and at the same time reviewing the proof sheets, which were sometimes miscarried, and, in one or two instances, not received at all without snfering any part of the business to interfere with his daily avocations. These circumstances are only mentioned as an apology for some of the errors which the reader may probabl y dis cover in the work; but, which, it is hoped, are neither nu merous nor important. The printing was conducted with unusual correctness; but there are, nevertheless, some few typographical errors, perhaps more than are corrected in the Errata, which must be ascribed to the oversight of the compiler alone, under the circumstances already mentioned. He has, however, the consolation to believe, that thv.i Autumn: 011117011 will he of considerable service to the cause of education, especially in that particular sphere for which it is intended. In forming a style of public speaking, much of the manner must of acourse depend upon training and example; but in the matter of thought and expression models must be selected, which, by the universal consent of mankind, are deemed worthy of imitation. In the great variety here presented the leisure hours of the student may find profitable occupation, and a copious fund of ideas may be col lected, to prepare him, when he listens migratory, to judge of true eloquence flowing from a furnished mind. The directions for public speaking have been made as brief and intelligible as possible, and are derived both from observation and established authorities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Oratory: Or Selections From the Speeches of Eminent Americans No apology can be required for presenting to the American public a volume of Speeches selected from the best efforts of their own statesmen. Public discussion is elsewhere the province of a few; in our country, it is the duty of almost all. It is not only desirable, there fore, but absolutely necessary, that all should have at hand those models, which the peculiar character of our institutions, the tone of our national thought, and the exigencies of our history, have combined to produce. Foreign orators may serve as examples of style, but the inhabitants of a republic must seek at home for the intellectual results of the government they have chosen, and for the illustration of those principles by which it is to be sustained. If they cannot always find the same refinement of language, or the same elaborateness of thought, which in older countries is the result of heredi tary wealth and more scholastic education, they will discover at least a vigorous and masculine diction, patriotic sentiments, and unflinching independence, the appropriate attendants upon themes for the most part grave, and frequently severe.
