Book The American Monthly Review of Reviews Vol 27

Download or read book The American Monthly Review of Reviews Vol 27 written by Albert Shaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Monthly Review of Reviews, Vol. 27: An International Magazine, January-June, 1903 Mm, This condition that we call good and the Wage times, moreover, has been widely m extended throughout the country. The autumn crops of no State or section were seriously below the average when taken as a whole, and this, in a country of such diversity of climate, soil, rainfall, and other physical con ditions is a remarkable fact. The iron and steel manufacturers have had the largest year in their history by an enormous margin of gain over the banner year 1901. Nearly all our other indus tries have good reports to make. The earnings of the railroads have been much larger than ever before, and many of them have advanced the wages of their employees by from 10 to 20 per cent. There cannot, of course, be a brisk demand at good, profitable prices for what every body has to sell without some corresponding in crease in the price of those things that every body has to buy. The consequence is, that along with abundant labor and good wages there has been a noticeable increase in the average cost of living. The advantage that the community, as a whole, derives from these periods of industrial activity with profitable prices consists, most of all, in the abundance of employment for every body. The dread of the poor man is not so much the high cost of living as the lack of work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The American Monthly Review of Reviews Vol 16 written by Albert Shaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Monthly Review of Reviews, Vol. 16: An International Magazine; July-December, 1897 To our readers The expanded title that appears on the cover of the review this month implies not the slightest degree of change in the plans, methods, 'aims, scope, editorship, management, or control of the magazine. It will continue to be a review OF reviews; and our regular readers are aware that it has long been a distinctively american monthly. The title review OF reviews, taken in a literal sense, comes far short of explaining the range and character of the periodical. Nevertheless, most of our readers doubtless have learned to read the thing itself into the name, rather than to consider the name as a form of words intended by strict construction to set limits upon our editorial methods. In Canada, England, and elsewhere, this periodical has always been mentioned with the word american prefixed, as if a part of the title, in order to distinguish it from Mr. Stead's English Review of Reviews. The full title, therefore, of american monthly review OF reviews would seem a natural and appropriate development. If it is found a long title for every - day use and off-hand allusion, and our readers and newspaper exchanges therefore fall into the habit of referring to it for short as the american monthly, we shall offer no objection. We are quite accustomed to speak of the Century, although the full name in large letters on the cover of that great periodical is the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which is certainly quite as long a name as the american monthly review OF reviews. What goes everywhere as Harper's is in full and formal language Harper's New Monthly Magazine. Those of us who are old enough can remember that the Century was called Scribner's by many people from force of habit for a good while after the name was changed; although the many loyal readers of the Outlook, who were equally loyal readers of the Christian Union, have seemed to find it remarkably easy to drop the old and adopt the new name. Inasmuch as the words review OF reviews are retained as an integral part of the enlarged title now appearing on our cover, We shall not look for a complete and prompt acceptance of new words as the familiar designation of this magazine. Our readers may continuato call it the review OF reviews wit-h the certainty that no confusion will result, for just as long a time as it may seem easy and natural to do so. The word american does not, of course, imply any exclusive devotion to American topics or interests. The range of this magazine will continue to be' international and worldwide. But there can be no wise and consistent observation that is not made from some pretty definite and constant point of View; and the point of View of this magazine will be in the future, as it has been in the past, clearly and unmistakably american. While its readers are not confined to one country, the vast majority of them are citizens of the United States, and the magazine is edited with direct reference to its American constituency. This being true, it follows that great world movements can be b7e'st presented in our pages in terms which assume American ideals and standards as the basis of comparison - the editor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Monthly Review of Reviews, Vol. 23: An International Magazine Kn The pilgrimage of Kossuth, nearly rugerspopu Iar Triumph fifty years ago, after the complete Europe' downfall of his cause in Hungary, was so marvelous in the demonstrations it created in liberty-loving lands, especially in the United States, that the memory of it still lingers in the world as one of those Object-lessons which some times make a good cause as potent in defeat as in victory. In some such sense the triumphal tour of the indomitable old Boer, President Paul Kriiger, is making its indelible impression upon the mind of continental Europe. It is not that anyone supposes that there is now the slightest chance of securing European intervention in South Africa; but the fresh and irresistible outburst of sympathy with Kruger has fixed universal mr, krfigerin france, attention upon the fact that in the very begin ning Kriiger had begged England to consent to arbitration of the matters in dispute, and that England had persistently refused to consider it. Kriiger may or may not be an admirable charac ter in the personal and private sense; but to Europe he typifies the valor and heroism of a tiny nation of farmers who have taught the great British empire how to fight, and who, with only a handful of soldiers left, are not yet willing to admit that they are defeated. Arbitration Will havea more practical meaning for every body in Europe from this time forth. On every occasion where Kriiger has had a chance to speak, he has dwelt upon that one idea. He reminds Europe of the principles of arbitration adopted at the Hague Conference, points to England's refusal to arbitrate, and thus, at least, serves as the apostle of the cause of arbitration, even though it be too late to secure application of the Hague principles in Kriiger's own particular ih stance. His landing at Marseilles was on No vember 22. In modern times, certainly, no other foreigner has been received in France with such acclaim. The old man from Pretoria has at the turn of the century taken hold of the imagination of Europe somewhat as Garibaldi did in his day.
