Book excerpt: Bliss Perry's "The American Mind: An Interpretation of American Thought and Character since the 1880s" is a significant work of intellectual history that explores the evolution of American thought and character during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Published in 1912, the book offers a comprehensive analysis of the philosophical, cultural, and social currents that shaped the American psyche during this period. At its core, "The American Mind" seeks to understand the unique features of American intellectual life and the distinctiveness of the American national character. Perry traces the development of American thought from the Gilded Age through the Progressive Era, examining the impact of various intellectual movements, social changes, and historical events on the collective consciousness of the nation. One of the central themes of the book is the tension between tradition and innovation in American thought. Perry explores how American thinkers grappled with the legacy of European intellectual traditions while also striving to forge a distinctly American philosophy and culture. He discusses the influence of pragmatism, transcendentalism, and other philosophical movements on American thought, as well as the ways in which American thinkers sought to reconcile conflicting ideas and values. "The American Mind" also delves into the social and cultural dimensions of American life, examining topics such as religion, education, literature, and politics. Perry analyzes the impact of immigration, industrialization, urbanization, and other social forces on the American psyche, highlighting the ways in which these changes shaped American identity and values. Throughout the book, Perry provides nuanced portraits of key figures in American intellectual history, including William James, John Dewey, Henry James, and Theodore Roosevelt, among others. He explores their ideas, contributions, and conflicts, offering readers a deeper understanding of the diverse currents that shaped American thought during this transformative period. Overall, "The American Mind" is a seminal work that continues to be studied and debated by scholars of American history, philosophy, and culture. Perry's insights into the complexities of the American psyche and the dynamics of intellectual life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries make the book an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to understand the roots of contemporary American identity and thought.

Book A History of American Philosophy

Download or read book A History of American Philosophy written by Herbert Wallace Schneider and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1946 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work treats of several aspects of American philosophy in their historical perspective. The author has interpreted philosophically the revolutionary changes that recent years have brought in the domain of education, church, politics, natural sciences etc. The reader will find herein that American Philosophy is the outgrowth of impacts of new life and new directions imported by waves of immigration. More conspicuous are the recent intellectual imports from Cambridge, Paris and Vienna. The philosophical analysis that grew up in Cambridge under the leadership of Whitehead, russel and Moore, the sophisticated, modernized versions of Catholic scholasticism from Paris and the the schools of value theory, existentialism, phenomenology, logical positivism, psychoanalysis, and socialism from Vienna--these are now pervasive forces in American culture. The author has ventured to predict that the types of philosophical thought described in this volume are being radically revised, reviewed and reconstructed because of these new importations that a decidedly new chapter in American philosophy is being written. The author has tried well to expound what American history teaches or what American philosophy stands for.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Historical Comparative Law and Comparative Legal History Legal history and comparative law overlap in important respects. This is more apparent with the use of some methods for comparison, such as legal transplant, natural law, or nation building. M.N.S. Sellers nicely portrayed the relationship. The past is a foreign country, its people strangers and its laws obscure.... No one can really understand her or his own legal system without leaving it first, and looking back from the outside. The comparative study of law makes one's own legal system more comprehensible, by revealing its idiosyncrasies. Legal history is comparative law without travel. Legal historians, perhaps especially in the United States, have been skeptical about the possibility of a fruitful comparative legal history, preferring in general to investigate the distinctiveness of their national experience. Comparatists, however, content with revealing or promoting similarities or differences between legal systems, by their nature strive toward comparison. Some American historians, especially since World War II, see the value in this"--

Book Preaching Eugenics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christine Rosen
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2004-03-04
  • ISBN : 9780198035640
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Preaching Eugenics written by Christine Rosen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-03-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With our success in mapping the human genome, the possibility of altering our genetic futures has given rise to difficult ethical questions. Although opponents of genetic manipulation frequently raise the specter of eugenics, our contemporary debates about bioethics often take place in a historical vacuum. In fact, American religious leaders raised similarly challenging ethical questions in the first half of the twentieth century. Preaching Eugenics tells how Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish leaders confronted and, in many cases, enthusiastically embraced eugenics-a movement that embodied progressive attitudes about modern science at the time. Christine Rosen argues that religious leaders pursued eugenics precisely when they moved away from traditional religious tenets. The liberals and modernists-those who challenged their churches to embrace modernity-became the eugenics movement's most enthusiastic supporters. Their participation played an important part in the success of the American eugenics movement. In the early twentieth century, leaders of churches and synagogues were forced to defend their faiths on many fronts. They faced new challenges from scientists and intellectuals; they struggled to adapt to the dramatic social changes wrought by immigration and urbanization; and they were often internally divided by doctrinal controversies among modernists, liberals, and fundamentalists. Rosen draws on previously unexplored archival material from the records of the American Eugenics Society, religious and scientific books and periodicals of the day, and the personal papers of religious leaders such as Rev. John Haynes Holmes, Rev. Harry Emerson Fosdick, Rev. John M. Cooper, Rev. John A. Ryan, and biologists Charles Davenport and Ellsworth Huntington, to produce an intellectual history of these figures that is both lively and illuminating. The story of how religious leaders confronted one of the era's newest "sciences," eugenics, sheds important new light on a time much like our own, when religion and science are engaged in critical and sometimes bitter dialogue.

Book Out of the Classroom and Into the World

Download or read book Out of the Classroom and Into the World written by Salvatore Vascellaro and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bank Street College of Education professor Salvatore Vascellaro is a leading advocate of taking children and teachers into a wider world as the key to improving our struggling schools. Combining practical and theoretical guidance, Out of the Classroom and into the World visits a rich variety of classrooms transformed by innovative field trip curricula--showing how students’ hearts and minds are opened as they discover how a suspension bridge works, what connects them to the people and places of their neighborhood, and as they come to understand the ecosystem of a river by following it to its source. Vascellaro shows, equally, that what teachers can offer children is fueled by their own engagement with the world, and he offers stunning examples of teachers awakened by their direct experiences with the social issues plaguing American society--from the flood-torn areas of New Orleans to the mining areas of West Virginia. Based on the core principles of progressive pedagogy, and the wisdom gained from Vascellaro’s experience as a teacher, school administrator, and teacher educator, Out of the Classroom and into the World is a direct retort to test scores and standards as adequate measures of teaching and learning--an inspiring call and major new resource for anyone interested in reinvigorating America’s classrooms.

Book excerpt: All but forgotten except as a part of nostalgic lore, American canals during the first half of the nineteenth century provided a transportation network that was vital to the development of the new nation. They lowered transportation costs, carried a vast grain trade from western farms to eastern ports, delivered Pennsylvania coal to New York, and carried thousands of passengers at what seemed effortless speed. Along their courses sprang up new towns and cities and with them new economic growth. Canals for a Nation brings together in one volume a survey of all the major American canals. Here are accounts of innovative engineering, of near heroic figures who devoted their lives to canals, and of canal projects that triumphed over all the uncertainties of the political process.

Book The American Indian Mind in a Linear World

Download or read book The American Indian Mind in a Linear World written by Donald Fixico and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, there are three approaches to studying American Indians: from how white Americans approach Indian studies, from the dynamics or exchange of Indian-white relations and from the Indian point of view. Donald Fixico, an American Indian, has been teaching and writing history for a quarter of a century. This book is the direct result of his experience as a scholar who 'thinks like an Indian' in an academic environment created predominantly by non-Indian thinkers. This book addresses current approaches to studying Native American traditional knowledge and acknowledges an Indian intellectualism that has up until now been ignored in studying Native American history. Written primarily from inside the Native world, but fully cognizant of the American cultures outside of that world, his unique voice speaks to a need for understanding the interior Native world: a world in which linear thinking is atypical and circularity is preferable.
