Download or read book The American Legion Monthly Vol 19 written by Philip von Blon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Legion Monthly, Vol. 19: January, 1931 Lyndonville was sixty - nine miles from home. I was eighteen years old. I made my application to Harley E. Folsom, division superintendent, and without any incident that lingers in memory I was put on the extra list of firemen. A few days later I was called out on my first run on a Sunday with an extra freight for Newport, some 63 miles north. The locomotive was No. 6, or the Enterprise, in charge of a large, stout man with a quiet manner named Orrin G. Chase, recently promoted after many years as a fireman. I was a green hand, but thanks to the tolerance of Chase and the friendly help of the head-end brakeman, Newell B. Stetson, I kept steam up and learned the rudiments of firing a wood-burner. That run was fifty-one years ago last July. Aside from myself the only member of the crew surviving is Mr. Stetson, who lives, I think, in San Pedro, California. The skyscraper, dedicated to the living, has the magic spark Of life in ii - life that perpetuates itself. It has, furthermore, even more than dwellings or other types Of structures, the spirit Of organized creativeness in it. It was only that factor which made the skyscraper possible. Just as surely, no less a force could have produced the pyramids. But the organized creativeness that built the pyra mids by comparison was a flimsy thing. The stone of the pyramids has outlasted it. The reverse should be true of the stuff that is mixed with the concrete and iron of modern skyscrapers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
