Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, Vol. 89: January, 1885-April, 1885 The weight of experimental evidence seems to the writer to favor the view that the specific properties of Koch's bacillus depend upon its ability to locate itself in certain situations, rather than in any power to produce a special kind of inflammation, giving rise to products having specific characters. If this is the case, we should expect that other organisms capable of locating themselves in the same situations would likewise give rise to tubercular neoplasms. In a recent communication to the French Academy of Sciences, we have evidence presented that such is the case. From its starting-point, this hyperaemia spread rapidly and continuously or appeared in patches here and there, finally, however, becoming universal in a very short space of time or ina few days. As a rule, the extremities were the last to be affected. The mucous membranes Of the mouth and nose participated sometimes in the process, and fissures formed at the corners Of the former; the conjunctivae were usually affected. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, Vol. 121 Clinical History (Dr. Preble). Patient, female, J.S, aged thirty-five years. Comes from a family whose history presents nothing of interest, especially is there no history of any tumors in any way resembling the tumors presented by the patient. When very young, a tumor appeared on the forehead and grew slowly until the resulting deformity led to efforts of removal by some sort of a morcellating operation. Shortly after this other tumors appeared irregularly and in great numbers over the entire body. The personal history gives nothing else of interest until young womanhood is reached, when the patient begins to suffer from pain and weakness, which gradually increased until they caused complete disability. She gives a history of a complete paraplegia without bladder or rectum disturbances. From the history given I am inclined to believe that the paraplegia was hysterical. Some years after the appearance of the tumors, but just when the patient cannot recall, she began to show the beginning of the joint changes which are now so marked. These consist of swelling and deformity, but there is not much pain. The joints first and most involved were the small joints of the hand; the changes began symmetrically. The tumors have not caused much disturbance as a rule, only a few of them having been painful. The patient states that they have varied in size from time to time, and that some of them have entirely disappeared spontaneously. Two years before I saw her a tumor on the left thigh ulcerated, and in spite of every treatment has never healed. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, Vol. 100 When the head was shaven there was some lack of symmetry, the right parietal surface anteriorly being lower than the left. There was no abrupt depression or traces of injury upon the scalp, and as a brother exhibited exactly the same conformation, it was considered congenital and it was decided not to Operate. The father, however, persisted that an operation be done and was anxious to assume all risk, feeling that the girl might better be dead than in the condition she then presented. He asserted his determination to take her from one surgeon to another until some one was found to undertake the surgical measures he felt sure would relieve her. At this time she was seen by Dr. Brower, Professor of Mental Diseases in Rush Medical College, etc., who gave the following written opinion, January 26, 1889: After consideration of your daughter's case I have reached the fol lowing conclusions. Book The American Journal of the Medical Sciences Vol 111 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The American Journal of the Medical Sciences Vol 111 Classic Reprint written by Edward P. Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, Vol. 111 In 1836 Donne found a previously undescribed parasite in the vaginal secretions of women. These were described as roundish bodies about twice the size of pus corpuscles and difficult to distinguish from the latter except by their independent motion. The motion was produced by certain organs, viz., a flagelliform appendage at the anterior end which worked with great rapidity, and a row of short cilia, at one side and near the flagellum, which kept up a sort of rotary motion. At the posterior end was a tail-like appendage of variable shape (Fig. 18). On account of the fact that the parasite resembled monads in having a flagellum, and "trichodines" (ciliata) in having cilia, Donne gave it the name of trichomonas, with the specific name vaginale on account of the habitat. Although there were errors in Donne's description, it was remarkably good considering the methods of observation and the knowledge of micro-parasites then available. Certain details in the description will be mentioned later. Notwithstanding Donne's growing reputation as a microscopist, and the fact that his observations were controlled by such men as Dujardin, Milne-Edwards, Ricord, and others, many microscopists (Vogel, Siebold, Valentin) denied the parasitic nature of the bodies, and held them to be altered epithelial cells from the uterus. Later, however, Scanzoni and Kolliker, Hennig, Haussmann, and Gasser re-examined the organisms, mostly from the side of clinical microscopy.
