Book Industries Firms and Jobs

Download or read book Industries Firms and Jobs written by George Farkas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1988-07-31 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a welcome reassertion of an old tradition of interdisdplinary research. That tradition has tended to atrophy in the last decade, largely because of an enormous expansion of the domain of neoc1assical economics. The expansion has fed on two sdentific developments: first, human capital theory; second, contract theory. Both developments have taken phenomena critical to the operation of the economy but previously understood in terms of categories separate and distinct from those with which economists generally work and sought to apply the same analytical techniques that we use to understand other economic problems. Human capital theory has applied conventional techniques to questions of labor supply. It began this endeavor with the supply of trained labor and then expanded to a general theory of labor supply by broadening the analysis to the allocation of time over the individual's life, the interdependendes of supply decisions within the family, and finally to the formation of the family itself. Similarly, contract theory has moved from a theory that explains the existence of c10sed economic institutions to a theory of their formation and internaioperation. The hallmark of both of these developments is the extension and applica tion of analytical techniques based on purposive maximization under con traints and the interaction of individual decision makers through a com petitive market or its analogue.

Book Superiority and Subordination as Subject Matter of Sociology

Download or read book Superiority and Subordination as Subject Matter of Sociology written by Georg Simmel and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Superiority and Subordination as Subject-Matter of Sociology" is an essay by the German Sociologist, philosopher and critic, Georg Simmel. In it, he shows that domination does not lie in the unilateral imposition of the superordinate's will upon the subordinate but that it involves reciprocal action. What appears to be the exercise of absolute power by some and the acquiescence by others is deceptive. Power "conceals an interaction, an exchange . . . . which transforms the pure one-sidedness of superordination and subordination into a sociological form." Thus, the superordinate's action cannot be understood without reference to the subordinate, and vice versa. The action of one can only be analyzed by reference to the action of others, since the two are part of a system of interaction that constrains both.

Book For Profit Democracy

Download or read book For Profit Democracy written by Loka Ashwood and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating sociological assessment of the damaging effects of the for†‘profit partnership between government and corporation on rural Americans Why is government distrust rampant, especially in the rural United States? This book offers a simple explanation: corporations and the government together dispossess rural people of their prosperity, and even their property. Based on four years of fieldwork, this eye†‘opening assessment by sociologist Loka Ashwood plays out in a mixed†‘race Georgia community that hosted the first nuclear power reactors sanctioned by the government in three decades. This work serves as an explanatory mirror of prominent trends in current American politics. Churches become havens for redemption, poaching a means of retribution, guns a tool of self†‘defense, and nuclear power a faltering solution to global warming as governance strays from democratic principles. In the absence of hope or trust in rulers, rural racial tensions fester and divide. The book tells of the rebellion that unfolds as the rights of corporations supersede the rights of humans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Sociology, Vol. 9: Bi-Monthly; July, 1903-May, 1904 The subsidy paid by the counties to industrial schools under this act is condemned by certain authorities, (1) because the tendency of subsidized institutions is more and more to lean on the state, and this causes patrons to give less liberally toward their support, and (2) the tendency of such subsidies is to tempt the favored institutions to keep youths year after year for the revenue it brings from the government. Furthermore, where the state supports it ought to control, in order that a detailed account of the expenditures of funds may be obtained; but this is not true of the schools organized under this act. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Sociology, Vol. 15: Bi-Monthly; July, 1909-May, 1910 Assuming, as a preface to the present argument, the editorial above referred to, we take Professor Ford's article as occasion for discussing the question, What sort of vindication is coming to sociology? Instead of attempting to answer the question by direct reply to the various types of misconstruction packed into Professor Ford's paper, we prefer to restate the meaning of the sociological movement. The vindication of sociology will appear, not in discovery of specific facts, nor in adoption of particular plans, still less in the attainment of a pedestal upon which sociology may pose in solitary state. It will come in eventual adjustment by the social sciences, and by social practice, to the conception of social relations which sociology represents.
