Book The Religious Roots of American Sociology

Download or read book The Religious Roots of American Sociology written by Cecil E. Greek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-20 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1992, demonstrates that American sociology has deep religious roots which continue, both directly and indirectly, to influence the discipline today. Early American sociology was closely aligned with the social gospel movement in Protestantism, which hope to make use of the new science of sociology to help solve social problems and, ultimately, prepare America for the establishment of Christ’s kingdom on earth. Although American sociology became secularized after 1920, it retained its ameliorative outlook, hoping to ‘save’ mankind through positivistic analysis and technocratic societal planning.

Book The Friendships of John Adams 1774 1801

Download or read book The Friendships of John Adams 1774 1801 written by Jamie Macpherson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-22 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first extended analysis of the friendship network of John Adams, forged during his lengthy public career from 1774-1801. While scholars have considered historic friendships, this monograph examines Adams’s friendship network within a generation of revolutionaries. The six friendships explored exemplify the diversity of political interaction: primary friendship (Abigail), intimate confidence (Rush), political alliance (Gerry), emergent rivalry (Jefferson), the politics of personal difference (Mercy Otis Warren), and idolised revolutionary (Samuel Adams). This work positions friendship at the heart of the historian’s craft; reconstructing historic relationships and considering the evolution of each dyad to examine the tensions, candour, intimacy, and forms of alliance in each. Adams’s impassioned epistles present a window into his private ruminations. John Adams’s expectation of friendship changed at each stage of his career: Through 1774-1801, Adams entreated support from friends, debated issues pertaining to politics, diplomacy, and the national interest, sought comfort from intimates, and lamented divisions from former friends. For John Adams, friendship represented the art of politics. This volume will be of value to students and scholars alike interested in American history, political history and social and cultural history.

Book Fashions in Management Research

Download or read book Fashions in Management Research written by Patrick Thomas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1999, this text sets out to analyze fashions in management literature through studying patterns in the citations offered to leading management authors. Particular attention is paid to those publications which are cited extensively, but only for a short period - these publications are regarded as potentially subject to fashionable pressures. More detailed case studies of fashionable publications are undertaken to gain a greater understanding of what factors may lead to management fashions. The book represents a large-scale empirical analysis of management fashions and culminates in an empirically validated theory of management fashions.
