Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Sociology, 1923, Vol. 28 Nevertheless one cannot fail to recognize that the very power of the warlike tradition itself must be due to the fact that it not only was, but is, compatible with certain elements in human nature. Men, and women also, display too keen an interest, as Professor Thomas has shown, i in Violent and precarious activities, to excuse the student of war in any neglect of its instinctive aspects, of which we must take account in the following section. There is room, however, to question whether the ruling classes went to the appall ing tasks of the world-war with quite as much zest for the gaming aspect of it as they had, according to Professor Thomas, displayed toward the spanish-american and Boer wars, which have been reduced, in our new perspective, to very slight skirmishes indeed. Moreover, we should not assume, in any case, too much rigidity about human nature itself. Old dispositions may be directed toward new Objects, and the particular character of these Objects can be partly determined by deliberate reorganization of cultural elements, such as traditions, ideals, and institutions. When one turns from these over-simple interpretations Of war, and seeks to supplement them by a more prolonged search, it is found that its roots are not one but many. They bear at the same time such diverse fruits as hatred and love; the ruthless destruction of others and the utterly reckless sacrifice Of one's own life for others; the constant interchange of murderous missiles, and the occasional exchange, between the very same men, of songs, newspapers, and tobacco - all these and other strange and illogical anomalies. Inventions are: (a) physical, mediating an adjustment of man to his natural physical environment, (b) social, consisting of some form Of social organization, adjusting man to other men and all men together to nature; and (c) method inventions, which are forms of neuro-psychic technique, ranging in content from simple habits to complex scientific laws and formulas, which aid man in interpreting and controlling his relation to his physical and social environments. 2. The Sources of invention are in the nature of the inventor (hands, brain, and speech) and in the nature of his environ ment (models, materials, forces). 3. The process of inventing is empirical and by scientific projection, most important modern inventions being of the latter type. An empirical invention is chiefly by direct copy, while a projected invention is by indirect copy. 4. Social progress is secured through inventions of the foregoing three types, and the method or scientific invention is preliminary to the highest degree of progress in physical and social inventions. 5. There are six major fields for future inventions: production, conservation, eugenics, euthenics, distribution, social organization. Invention is the process by which man has arisen above the dominance of his crude physical environment and has reached a position of control. He masters his environment, as the common expression has it, only through invention. In the course of time, he comes even to invent his environment. In this respect he is more able and successful where his social environment is in question than with respect to his physical environment. But even his physi cal environment he has been able to transform in many of its details, especially by rendering his adjustment to it increasingly indirect. And for this purpose he has created a socio-technic environment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. If so I accept it with all the meekness I can comm-and. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Sociology, Vol. 26: Bimonthly, July, 1920 May, 1921 A very spirited controversy over the relative influence of nature and nurture has raged through the writings of bio sociologists and sociologists of the ordinary sort for so long a time that the prospect of contributing even an armful of brush to the illumination of this problem seems rather Slight. There are, however, few matters of greater popular interest, and I think we may say of greater importance from the standpoint of the education of youth, than the attempt to trace the causes by which the notably successful, the notoriously unsuccessful, and the innumerable obscure come to their respective states. The orthodox biological View regarding these matters has, it should be noted, undergone a remarkable change. The older environmentalism has declined and in its place has arisen the present cult of heredity with such pessimistic implications inter woven as the degree oi eugenic fervor of a given writer may lead him to venture upon. A simple statement of how this change has come about may be in place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Sociology, Vol. 9: Bi-Monthly; July, 1903-May, 1904 The subsidy paid by the counties to industrial schools under this act is condemned by certain authorities, (1) because the tendency of subsidized institutions is more and more to lean on the state, and this causes patrons to give less liberally toward their support, and (2) the tendency of such subsidies is to tempt the favored institutions to keep youths year after year for the revenue it brings from the government. Furthermore, where the state supports it ought to control, in order that a detailed account of the expenditures of funds may be obtained; but this is not true of the schools organized under this act. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Sociology, Vol. 15: Bi-Monthly; July, 1909-May, 1910 Assuming, as a preface to the present argument, the editorial above referred to, we take Professor Ford's article as occasion for discussing the question, What sort of vindication is coming to sociology? Instead of attempting to answer the question by direct reply to the various types of misconstruction packed into Professor Ford's paper, we prefer to restate the meaning of the sociological movement. The vindication of sociology will appear, not in discovery of specific facts, nor in adoption of particular plans, still less in the attainment of a pedestal upon which sociology may pose in solitary state. It will come in eventual adjustment by the social sciences, and by social practice, to the conception of social relations which sociology represents.
