Download or read book Utopian Genderscapes written by Michelle C. Smith and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2021-10-04 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A necessary rhetorical history of women’s work in utopian communities Utopian Genderscapes focuses on three prominent yet understudied intentional communities—Brook Farm, Harmony Society, and the Oneida Community—who in response to industrialization experimented with radical social reform in the antebellum United States. Foremost among the avenues of reform was the place and substance of women’s work. Author Michelle C. Smith seeks in the communities’ rhetorics of teleology, choice, and exceptionalism the lived consequences of the communities' lofty goals for women members. This feminist history captures the utopian reconfiguration of women’s bodies, spaces, objects, and discourses and delivers a needed intervention into how rhetorical gendering interacts with other race and class identities. The attention to each community’s material practices reveals a gendered ecology, which in many ways squared unevenly with utopian claims. Nevertheless, this volume argues that this utopian moment inaugurated many of the norms and practices of labor that continue to structure women’s lives and opportunities today: the rise of the factory, the shift of labor from home spaces to workplaces, the invention of housework, the role of birth control and childcare, the question of wages, and the feminization of particular kinds of labor. An impressive and diverse array of archival and material research grounds each chapter’s examination of women’s professional, domestic, or reproductive labor in a particular community. Fleeting though they may seem, the practices and lives of those intentional women, Smith argues, pattern contemporary divisions of work along the vibrant and contentious lines of gender, race, and class and stage the continued search for what is possible.

Download or read book Inclusive Aims written by Heather Brook Adams and published by Parlor Press LLC. This book was released on 2024-03-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inclusive Aims: Rhetoric’s Role in Reproductive Justice engages with fraught reproductive realities—past, present, and future—and offers analysis and advice for coalitional alliance and strategy building. For those who legitimately value the needs, desires, and safety of reproducing people, recent years have demonstrated that in the United States especially, reproductive matters represent not only contestation but extreme precarity. Considering such pressing exigencies, those pursuing just reproductive politics can benefit from thinking about such events and actions rhetorically, and not in isolation but as interconnected and connected to larger webs of action. The collection features a range of activist-scholars and scholar-activists, each of whom shares and/or interrogates stories of reproductive in/justice. Its topics range from discourse practices related to telehealth, birthing doula care, and negligence due to systemic racism and transphobia to representations of vasectomy, strategies for political solidarity, and considerations for navigating the challenges of activist interventions. The project mindfully infuses insights from thought-traditions of reproductive justice activists and scholars outside of rhetoric. Through its varied chapters, the collection demonstrates how rhetorics of reproductive politics function as a means by which various injustices are illuminated and addressed. Contributors include Zachary Beare, Fabiola Carrión, Hannah Dudley-Shotwell, Natalie Fixmer-Oraiz, Meta Henty, Adele N. Nichols, Sheri Rysdam, Shui-yin Sharon Yam, Michelle C. Smith, Melissa Stone, Jill Swiencicki, Jenna Vinson, and James D. Warwood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goals of Healthy Start are to improve the quality of the local perinatal system of care, to enhance the cultural competence of providers who work within the system, and to improve women's access to the system of care. These objectives are accomplished through outreach, health education, case management, and enhanced community collaboration within the local perinatal health system. The activities of the Healthy Start program are designed to encourage pregnant and interconceptional women, providers, and other community stakeholders to address the risk factors associated with poor perinatal health outcomes. In this paper, an evidence base is provided to support the targeted interventions implemented by the national Healthy Start program and other perinatal health initiatives to reduce racial/ethnic disparities in birth outcomes.
