And this supposition will gain in weight the more we bear in mind, let, that, in the course of time the various ceremonies of gods and heroes strongly tended to intermingle 2nd, that Athene and Theseus became more and more closely associated as the patrons of Attica, and that they both have an especial share in the constitution of the Panathenaic festival; and 3rd, that after the Persian war the chief power of the Athenians consisted in their maritime force, a suggestion of which they would naturally tend to introduce in connexion with their patron deity. C., Andokides is one of the most interest ing. Part of this interest is due to the fact that he seems never to have been careless in his work; SO that although his figures are Often out Of drawing, and always Show a' power of Observation stronger than his power of correct delineation, still his work as a whole is thoroughly good. Another source of interest lies in the fact that he lived at the period when the black-figured ware was going out of fashion and a new style with red figures was taking its place. Andokides did not, however, at once give up the old manner for the new, and we find several vases signed by him, on one side of which is a black-figured picture, while on the other is a red-figured one. He evidently thought both the black and the red forms of decoration were good, and SO tried to give his vases an added charm by combining the two styles. The same idea is shown on much later vases, though in these the black decoration has a secondary importance.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Archaeology and of the History of the Fine Arts, 1893, Vol. 8 Dorpfeld (xv, p. 424) says that the Persians left the walls of the temple and the outer portico standing; that this is evident fi-cm the present condition of the architraves, triglyphs and cornices, which are built into the Acropolis wall. These architectural mem bers were taken from the building while it still stood, and built into the northern wall of the citadel. But, if the Athenians had wished to restore the temple as quickly as possible, they would have left these members where they were. It seems, at least, rather extravagant to take them carefully away and then restore the temple without a peristyle, for the restored building would probably need at least cornices if not triglyphs or archi traves; then why not repair the old ones? It appears by no means impossible that, as Lolling (p. 655) suggests, only a part of the temple was restored.'7 Still more natural is the assumption, that the Athenians carried off the whole temple while they were about' it. I do not, however, dare to proceed to this assumption, because I do not know where the Athenians would have kept their public monies if the entire building had been removed. Perhaps part of the peristyle was so badly injured by the Persians that it could not be repaired. At any rate, the Athenians intended (as Diirpfeld, XII, p. 202, also believes) to remove the whole build ing so soon as the great new temple should be completed.
