Book The American High School Classic Reprint

Download or read book The American High School Classic Reprint written by John Franklin Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American High School The problems of the American high school are specific. They differ much from those of the elementary school below and those of the college, university, or technical school above. The experience of the last half century has revealed them; it has also developed a considerable body of knowledge concerning them, which every high school teacher should possess before entering upon his work. This knowledge will not solve all his individual problems, but it should at least make him aware of their existence and suggest the solution which he must himself work out. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Secondary School and Some of Its Problems There are educational questions involving so large an area of interest that they defy treatment at the hand of an individual; a mere enumeration of the problems that attach themselves to our secondary schools would suffice to indicate the unwisdom of such an attempt. On individual questions and groups of questions, thoughtful men and women have concentrated their efforts; to combine their contributions to the various phases of the subject under wise editorial control into a consistent whole, to create a thesaurus of sound opinion on what the secondary school has been, is, and should be, seems the only way of reaching an agreement on the rational conduct of our middle schools. The cooperative idea seems peculiarly appropriate to this need of our educational scheme. As for the present treatise, its title speaks for itself. It has been realized by the author that it is wiser to concentrate attention upon some of the problems of the secondary school and indicate their significance rather fully, than to compass all, or even a majority, of the questions that attach themselves to our system of middle schools. Book A Plea for Greek in the American High School Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Plea for Greek in the American High School Classic Reprint written by Thomas Fitzhugh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plea for Greek in the American High School Greek is the one ideal element needed to round out and per feet our system of democratic education. Its call is a spiritual one. The maintenance of Greek in the high school is our tribute of loyalty to the spiritual ancestry of our culture. The time is come, when we too of Virginia and the South can afford to pay such reverence to the ideal interests of life. Our public school system can never be fully worthy of an enlightened democracy, until we shall have made it possible for any number of pupils, however small, to pursue the study of Greek during the last two years of the high school course. For nothing is more certain than that, in the profoundest essentials of our thought and speech. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Literature in the High School Classic Reprint

Download or read book Literature in the High School Classic Reprint written by Hugh Mercer Blain and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literature in the High School In the face of these expert Opinions, it might seem, at first blush, presumptuous to discuss the matter of English at all, in connection with either high school or college. But not so. Even if literature cannot be taught, - and my experience inclines me to this opinion, - it certainly cannot be learned without the ability to read the written word. Moreover, the best literature cannot 'be read intelligently, and will not be-read at all by the majority, without proper introduction and guidance. In the matter of composition, certainly no man is regarded as fit for service in his community who cannot express his thoughts and desires in cor rect every-day English; and, though I say it that shouldn't, most college professors would be well satisfied with such ideal material! Even the last of the three apparent aspersions by no means eliminates the subject of English from discussion. For, even if the day ever comes when English is not required in the high school, it will always have a favorite place in the curri culum. Granted, then, that English shall continue to occupy a promi nent post in our educational institutions, it is eminently fitting that we should consider the relation between high school and col lege English. This question, strictly American, can best be answered in the truly American way, by asking several others: What are the principal aims in the teaching of English? With these ends in view, what should constitute the content of the course? How is this to be presented so as to bring about the desired results? As the college can but continue the work of the high school, I take, it that it will be sufficient to discuss these questions with special reference to the latter. Book A First Book in English for High Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book A First Book in English for High Schools Classic Reprint written by A. L. Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book in English for High Schools One of the reasons for the publication of A first book IN english is the belief On the part of the authors and the publishers that a better text of this kind is needed one that is thoroughly adapted to use in the majority of American high schools. To write such a book has been the purpose of the authors, who have brought to the work years of classroom experience in the teaching of English composition to pupils of the junior and the senior high school ages. Principles. Throughout the first book IN english the authors have kept clearly in mind the fundamental problems of English com position: (i) The problem of something to speak or write about; (2) the problems of gathering, evaluating, and organizing material; (3) the problems of expressing thoughts correctly, clearly, sincerely, and pleasingly; and (4) the problem of adapting what is spoken or written to a definite audience or to a definite body of readers. An ex amination of the lessons in this book will Show that these fundamentals have been made basic considerations. Nowhere in the book is there a discussion of the principles of unity, coherence, and emphasis as such. At the same time, the habit of ex pressing unified thoughts coherently and with emphasis is fixed through practice. The pupil learns to present unified, coherent, well-emphasized thoughts by learning through practice to express thoughts that he has first carefully selected, organized, and evaluated. The young pupil should not be confused with abstractions. He must learn by doing. Throughout the book the developing interests and abilities of boys and girls are carefully gauged and considered. Download or read book A School History of the United States Classic Reprint written by Nathaniel Wright Stephenson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School History of the United States This book is intended for use in the upper grammar grades and in the junior high school. Its authors have borne in mind the double fact that While American schools still retain - it is to be hoped will always retain - a wholesome variety in their detail of instruction, they are nevertheless approaching a national conformity in main features. Espe cially is this true in history. The time for a school course in American history truly nationalized, broadly speaking, both in matter and method has arrived. The recent discussions of the subject in the National Education Association, in the American Historical Association, and by a host of individual critics have cleared the atmosphere as never before. The World War has worked as a powerful solvent to precipitate a new consensus of opinion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Raison D Etre of the Public High School Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Raison D'etre of the Public High School At this point we make the digressive remark that the efficiency of the American public school in training for citizenship is likely to be severely tested in the near future. Until within recent years, the immigration into our country was nearly homogeneous and largely sympathetic, and assimilation was comparatively easy. But recently there has appeared in our midst an element peculiarly alien in race and sympathies, or revolutionary in tendencies, and in numbers sufficiently large to disturb the calm posture of our social forms and the settled traditions of centuries. Against the subversive influence of this element our common school is our tower of strength, and civics as a branch of instruction assumes paramount importance. We come now directly to the public high school. How is its existence as a part of the social structure justified? How does it appear that society receives far more than an equivalent for its cost and is the gainer by it? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High School's Cure of Souls What the American high school needs is just what English Rugby needed and what the immortal Arnold gave it thru his teaching and example, and as Hughes says, above all thru his unwearied zeal in creating moral thoughtfulness in every boy with whom he came into personal contact.1 Woe unto the land if its future leaders lack moral thoughtfulness in its fullest sense: both the righteous intent and the practical wis dom; only by these two elements combined in our statesmen and citizens can the republic be saved and the nation fulfil its destiny. This book was released on 2018-04-29 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Black Diamond, 1935: Pikeville High School, Pikeville, Kentucky Despite many handicaps, the public schools have steadily gone ahead for three full centuries of time. Education is more liberal. The schools are more demo cratie, with elected student councils giving youngsuns themselves a voice in school policy that starts early training for larger duties of citizenship. The high school curriculumis constantly expanding, too. Not every student will go to college, nor is it desirable they should, so it becomes important that the high school should train for life. It is doing this to day, 'with courses that fit boys and girls for business and for trades. The Boston Latin School three hundred years ago offered a handful of bo;s the Latin classics as their preparation for living. Today over twenty-three thous and high schools, with a quarter of a million teachers, and administrators, are training nearly six million boys and girls to be useful citizens. They are the greatest bulwark that we have against the American problems of American life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Everyday Classics Seventh Reader American Life and Literature for Grammar Grades and Junior High Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Everyday Classics Seventh Reader American Life and Literature for Grammar Grades and Junior High Schools Classic Reprint written by Franklin T. Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyday Classics Seventh Reader American Life and Literature for Grammar, Grades and Junior High Schools This volume of the Everyday Classics is prepared with a two-fold purpose: (1) to introduce young people to a part of that common cultural material which is now a part of' our inheritance, and (2) to put them into sympathy with some of the feelings and ideals which are in a special sense Ameri can. The importance of unifying our national life has not for more than a century seemed so urgent as in these last few years. The school, and particularly the literature read there, have long been recognized as among the most potent means of building such national unity. It has been our purpose also so to choose and arrange the material of the book as to provide for that real study and reflection, that growing consciousness of power that should come from the courses in the highest elementary grades and the Junior High School. The administrative segregation of the Junior High School from the grades below it should be based on a course of study differentiated, but not too sharply, from the work of the preceding year. One way of doing this is to bring like elements in the work into groups constituting larger units. Most of the selections in this volume will suggest to the alert teacher other books and articles on similar themes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Federal State: A d104-Book in Civic for High Schools and Academies This Civics text-book is intended not only to describe the organization and work of the different American governments, but to make prominent the relation of the citizens to the governments and to each other. It has been thought that this could be done best by considering the subject from the standpoint of the State: that is, of the whole body of citizens considered as an organized unit rather than from the point of view of government or of the individual citizen. This made it necessary, first, to explain some of the more important principles of political science with practical applications; second, to show how the American Federal State became what it is; third, to describe the national, state (commonwealth), and local governments; and, fourth, to give some idea of the policies of the State in regard to great public questions and of the problems that confront it. In the historical portions of the book no attempt has been made to touch upon more than the salient events, each of which is considered not so much for any intrinsic worth as for the light that it may throw upon the development of nationality within the United States. For details and for subjects omitted altogether, the reader must be referred to the many excellent manuals of American History. The discussions upon government assume that the student needs a clear conception of the real character and actual working of our governments much more than he does a knowledge of the government as it is supposed to be. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Selective Character of American Secondary Education For two generations the public high school in the United States has grown at such a rapid rate as to give it a unique place in the history of educational institutions. Appearing late in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, it at once entered into a struggle for survival with the dominant secondary school of the time, the private academy. For a half-century the high school maintained itself with more or less success, and was well established by 1870. During the fifty years that have elapsed in the meantime it has expanded in a manner quite without precedent. From 1890 to 1918 the number of high Schools reporting to the Bureau at Washington increased from 2, 526 to the number of pupils in attendance from to and the number of teachers from to At the same time the population of the United States increased from to approximately Thus while the high-school enrolment increased 711 per cent the total population increased but 68 per cent. From year to year this institution has constantly attracted a larger and larger proportion of the children of high-school age in the nation.
