Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Geologist, Vol. 8: A Monthly Journal of Geology and Allied Sciences, July to December, 1891 Situated right in the midst of the Taconic region Mt. Greylock has been often alluded to during the last seventy years in the much debated Taconic Question. Professors C. Dewey, E. Emmons, E. Hitchcock and J. D. Dana are the principal authorities on the geology of the mountain. The general synclinal structure of the mass and also the fact that it consists mainly of certain schists underlaid by limestone are well known. Professor Dana has also conjectured the anticlinal structure of the hollow which separates two of its ridges. The following description is based upon the new 20 ft. Contour map made by the topographers of the U. S. Geological Survey, and upon extended and laborious geological explorations, and upon the careful microscopic study of lithological specimens by Mr. J. E. Wolff. The results of modern topography, orography and petrography have been brought to bear upon the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Geologist, Vol. 35: A Monthly Journal of Geology and Allied Sciences William Henry Pettee was born in Newton Upper Falls, Mass., January 13, 1836, of representative New England parentage. His father was a manufacturer of cotton fabrics and of mill machinery. In boyhood his studious tastes had to be restrained and his college preparation delayed out of regard to his somewhat slender bodily frame. He entered Harvard College at nineteen years of age, took high rank in the required classical course of that period, was selected to deliver a Latin oration in his junior year, and graduated with distinction in the class of 1861. He continued in graduate work in the same university for over three years, receiving the degree of master of arts in 1864, studying at first in the engineering department of the Lawrence Scientific School and later in the college, where at the same time he was an assistant. From 1865 to 1869 he traveled and studied in Europe, his main work being in the Royal Mining Academy of Saxony, at Freiberg, with vacations in the mining regions of Germany. In 1868 Mr. Pettee returned to Harvard University as a teacher in the School of Mining and Practical Geology then established under the direction of Josiah D. Whitney. Download or read book The American Geologist Vol 26 written by N. H. Winchell and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Geologist, Vol. 26: A Monthly Journal of Geology and Allied Sciences On Sunday, the 19th day of November, 1899, there passed away to his long rest, one whose name has been inseparably connected with the progress and advancement of geological as well as palaeontological research, in the Dominion of Canada. For a few years back Sir William Dawson's health began to fail as advancing years rolled on. The constant strain of a long life of intense activity and incessant labour, at last wore out the chords of life in his person. He died peacefully at his residence, 293 University street, Montreal, just as the first hour of the day of rest dawned, surrounded by his wife and constant companion and a number of his children. Sir William accomplished enough during his life, in the interests of education, science, and religion to satisfy any three hardworking individuals. He leaves behind him such monuments of industry and perseverance as few men do. The Peter Red-path Museum of McGill University alone is a monument which for ages will give food for thought to the coming generations, both to students of the university and to the geologists who seek to unravel the problems of geological science in the different portions of Canada, but more especially those of the maritime provinces, his native land.
